Misinterpretation of carbon dioxide monitoring because of deadspace of heat and moisture exchanger with a filter in pediatric anesthesia: A case report.

RATIONALE: When patients are intubated and treated with mechanical ventilation, the upper respiratory tract is bypassed by the flow of dry and cold air. To prevent disturbances of airway homeostasis, a heat and moisture exchanger filter (HMEF) has been applied to breathing circuit. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 4-month-old male infant was ventilated with the pediatric HMEF. We report the impact of ignoring the direct influence of a filter containing deadspace in pediatric mechanical ventilation. DIAGNOSES: The breathing circuit with HMEF leads to unexpected complications such as mechanical obstruction

The Use of Neuraxial Catheters for Postoperative Analgesia in Neonates: A Multicenter Safety Analysis from the Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is limited evidence to support the safety of neuraxial catheters in neonates. Safety concerns have been cited as a major barrier to performing large randomized trials in this population. The main objective of this study is to examine the safety of neuraxial catheters in neonates across multiple institutions. Specifically, we sought to determine the incidence of overall and individual complications encountered when neuraxial catheters were used for postoperative analgesia in neonates. METHODS: This was an observational study that used the Pediatric Regional Anesthe

[Case of anesthesia for thoracoscopic thymectomy in a pediatric patient with myasthenia gravis: reversal of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade with sugammadex].

Neuromuscular blocking drugs (NMBDs) can predispose patients with myasthenia gravis to postoperative paralysis and respiratory complications. We had a 12-year-old female patient undergoing thoracoscopic thymectomy. She had suffered from MGFA class IIa (mild systemic) myasthenia gravis for 4 months. Anesthesia was induced with 3 mg x kg(-1) of thiopental and 0.2 mg x kg(-1) of rocuronium, which was given incrementally to achieve 100% blockade. Anesthesia was maintained with oxygen, air, 2% sevoflurane and 0.2 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1) of remifentanil. 0.05 mg x kg(-1) of rocuronium was added wh

Articaine versus lidocaine for local anesthesia in pediatric dental procedures: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Articaine has been proposed as an alternative to lidocaine for local anesthesia in pediatric dentistry. Several systematic reviews have compared articaine with lidocaine in children; however, their conclusions vary by procedure, injection technique, outcome scale, and safety definition. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews, with or without meta-analyses, comparing articaine and lidocaine in pediatric dental procedures. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched without a lower date restriction until June 22, 2026. The study protocol was prospectively registered in

Implementation of virtual parental presence during induction of anesthesia: a single-site descriptive study at a pediatric academic center.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety in children can cause distress for patients, families, and care teams. Virtual Parental Presence during the Induction of Anesthesia (VPPIA) offers a novel way to maintain emotional support during inhalational induction, particularly in the wake of COVID-19-related restrictions on in-room parental presence. While prior studies suggest VPPIA is feasible and acceptable, practical insights on real-world implementation and coaching strategies remain limited. METHODS: This single-site, descriptive implementation study at a pediatric academic center evaluated the feas

What is the minimum time interval for reporting of intraoperative core body temperature measurements in pediatric anesthesia? A secondary analysis.

Given that perioperative normothermia represents a quality parameter in pediatric anesthesia, numerous studies have been conducted on temperature measurement, albeit with heterogeneous measurement intervals, ranging from 30 s to fifteen minutes. We aimed to determine the minimum time interval for reporting of intraoperative core body temperature across commonly used measurement intervals in children. Data were extracted from the records of 65 children who had participated in another clinical study and analyzed using a quasibinomial mixed linear model. Documented artifacts, like probe dislocati…

BACKGROUND: Caudal anesthesia is an effective method of pain management, which can be successfully employed to minimize post-thoracotomy pain in pediatric patients. However, its main disadvantage is the short postoperative analgesic period, which can be prolonged by the concurrent administration of one of many adjuvants. OBJECTIVES: This prospective randomized, blinded study aimed to compare the efficacy of dexmedetomidine versus morphine as adjuvants to bupivacaine in caudal anesthesia for thoracic surgeries in pediatric patients. METHODS: Fifty patients were randomly allocated into two equ
