The cause of depression in adolescence: peer bullying.

OBJECTIVE: Depression affects adolescents worldwide and often predicts more serious disease manifestations in later lifetimes. Peer victimization or bullying, another form of child abuse, increases symptoms of depression. In this paper, the relationship between peer bullying and depression in adolescence was investigated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Each adolescent who was admitted to the adolescent unit completed forms referred to as the 'Depression Scale For Children' and the 'Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale'. Sociodemographic features and results of the scales' evaluation were studied.

Results of a Peer Navigator Program to Address Chronic Illness Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness.

People who are homeless disproportionately experience the burdens of chronic disease, have limited access to preventive care, and may be less trusting of healthcare agencies. The Collective Impact Project created and evaluated an innovative model designed to increase chronic disease screening and referral to healthcare and public health services. Trained Peer Navigators (PNs), who were paid staff with lived experiences similar to the clients served, were embedded in five agencies serving people experiencing homelessness or at risk for homelessness. Over two years, PNs engaged 1071 individuals.

Training Male Sexual Abuse Survivors as Peer Leaders to Deliver Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Affirmative Care.

This paper provides a description and evaluation of training male sexual abuse survivors to deliver Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Interviewing with Trauma-Informed Affirmative Care (MI-AC) online to sexual and gender minority (SGM) men with sexual assault histories and depression. After a search and selection process, 26 men with lived experience of sexual abuse received MI training that included the use of role-playing, video demonstrations, and practice followed by weekly supervision while co-leading groups. Peer leaders completed several measures pre and post training, inc

School-based victimization in children and adolescents presenting for cognitive behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Peer victimization and anxiety frequently co-occur and result in adverse outcomes in youth. Cognitive behavioural treatment is effective for anxiety and may also decrease children's vulnerability to victimization. AIMS: This study aims to examine peer victimization in youth who have presented to clinical services seeking treatment for anxiety. METHOD: Following a retrospective review of clinical research data collected within a specialized service, peer victimization was examined in 261 children and adolescents (55.6% male, mean age 10.6 years, SD = 2.83, range 6-17 years) with a

Perceptions of peer and parental attitudes toward substance use and actual adolescent substance use: The impact of adolescent-confidant relationships.

Objective: While peer influence is a well-documented risk factor for adolescent substance use, it remains unclear whether peer or parental attitudes have greater impact, and if this relationship is moderated by having a confidant and the relationship between adolescents and their confidant. Method: Pooled (2015-2018) National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data on adolescents (12-17 years) were used. Perceived peer and parental disapproval of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use were dichotomized. We assessed associations between disapproval and past-month tobacco (N = 51,352), alcohol (

Emotional maltreatment and neglect impact neural activation upon exclusion in early and mid-adolescence: An event-related fMRI study.

Child maltreatment gives rise to atypical patterns of social functioning with peers which might be particularly pronounced in early adolescence when peer influence typically peaks. Yet, few neuroimaging studies in adolescents use peer interaction paradigms to parse neural correlates of distinct maltreatment exposures. This fMRI study examines effects of abuse, neglect, and emotional maltreatment (EM) among 98 youth (n = 58 maltreated; n = 40 matched controls) using an event-related Cyberball paradigm affording assessment of both social exclusion and inclusion across early and mid-adolescence (

Increasing reciprocal social interactions using collaborative art activities: An intervention for children with complex communication needs and their peers.

Purpose: Children with complex communication needs who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies to communicate have difficulty participating in interactions with their peers. Integrating a collaborative learning framework with art activities may facilitate social interactions between children with complex communication needs and their peers.Method: A single-subject withdrawal design was utilised to examine the impact of collaborative art activities on reciprocal social interactions between 2 dyads of participants with complex communication needs and their same-age pe

Passive and active suicidal ideation among left-behind children in rural China: An evaluation of intrapersonal and interpersonal vulnerability and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Although theoretical conceptualizations of suicide hold that passive and active suicidal ideation are etiologically distinct, existing research observing this distinction is modest, with most prior studies focusing exclusively on active ideation. Understanding processes associated with passive ideation is clinically important insofar as passive ideation may precede active ideation, and thus serve as an earlier intervention target prior to potential onset of suicidal behavior. We aimed to evaluate intrapersonal and interpersonal vulnerability and resilience factors for passive ideati

Peer attitudes toward children with cleft (lip and) palate related to speech intelligibility, hypernasality and articulation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In addition to anatomical and physiological problems, children with a cleft (lip and) palate (CP ± L) often face psychosocial difficulties. A complex interaction between patient and environment may induce these problems. Based on the literature, speech disorders may negatively influence a listener's judgement of a speaker. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the attitudes of peers toward the speech of children with CP ± L. METHOD: Sixty-nine typically-developing children (7-12 years, 34 boys, 35 girls) judged audio-recorded speech samples of nine ch

Socio-Ecological Predictors of Resilience Development Over Time Among Youth With a History of Maltreatment.

While there is a growing body of research examining resilient development in adolescents with a history of maltreatment, it remains unclear whether youth resilient functioning changes over time and what factors predict such change. The current study aimed to identify the socio-ecological predictors of the change in resilient functioning over time among adolescents with a history of maltreatment. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted with a sample of 771 adolescents drawn from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW-II). Over 18 months, 23.2% of the adole

Peer Victimization in Children With ADHD: A Community-Based Longitudinal Study.

Objectives: To investigate (a) whether children with ADHD experience higher levels of overt and relational peer victimization (PV) than children without ADHD and (b) child, family, and school predictors of PV in children with ADHD. Method: 173 children with ADHD and 199 non-ADHD controls were recruited through 43 Melbourne schools at mean age 7.3 years. Parent- and teacher-reported PV (Social Experience Questionnaire) data were collected at mean age 8.9 years. Potential child, family, and school predictors of PV were measured at baseline. Results: Children with ADHD experienced higher levels o

Adolescents' trajectory through peer loss after a road traffic accident.

This mixed method study investigated the short- and long-term effects of peer loss on eight adolescents after a fatal school bus accident. Phenomenological analysis of their retrospective narratives revealed three patterns (living in despair, collecting my pieces, remembering, and moving on). Quantitative findings indicate progressive decrease in post-traumatic stress symptoms severity across time; increase in positive changes in perceptions of self, others, and life between 18 and 34 months; and stable continuing bond with the deceased peers.

Experts by Experience: Peer Support and its Use with the Homeless.

The homeless population has complex needs. Peers with experience of homelessness offer unique perspectives in supporting those experiencing homelessness. Peer support fostered and developed by professional organisations, termed intentional peer support (IPS), formalises this process. This review aims to assess the effectiveness of IPS as an intervention with young adults and adult homeless persons (including streetdwelling and those within services). PyscINFO, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and CINAHL were searched, resulting in ten studies, involving 1,829 participants. Peer support has significant

The role of peer relationships in parental bereavement during childhood and adolescence.

This article reviews current knowledge concerning the relationship between peer support and adjustment outcomes and experiences for parentally bereaved children. A brief overview of the effects of parental bereavement and factors influencing immediate and long-term adjustment is provided, followed by an overview of peer-provided social support and its relationship to adjustment. Current findings on the predictive value of peer support for adjustment are then discussed, with emphasis on the reciprocal positive and negative influences that peer support and adjustment (or lack thereof) exert. Peer Observed Interaction and Structured Evaluation (POISE): a Canadian experience with peer supervision for genetic counselors.

Peer observation, while often used in other professions, has not been formally applied in genetic counseling. The objective of this study was to pilot a method of peer evaluation whereby genetic counselors observed, and were observed by, each other during patient interaction. All of the available genetic counselors participated in both rounds of the pilot study (six in round one, seven in round two). The genetic counselors that observed the session used an observation room. Most participants reported learning a new skill. Sensitivity to, and comfort with, the feedback process improved. We conc

Understanding the context of male and transgender sex work using peer ethnography.

OBJECTIVES: To distinguish between three distinct groups of male and transgender sex workers in Pakistan and to demonstrate how members of these stigmatized groups need to be engaged in the research process to go beyond stated norms of behaviour. METHODS: A peer ethnography study was undertaken in a major city in Pakistan. 15 male and 15 transgender sex workers were trained as peer researchers to each interview three peers in their network. Analysis was based on interviews with peer researchers as well as observation of dynamics during training and analysis workshops. RESULTS: The research p

Longitudinal pathways linking child maltreatment, emotion regulation, peer relations, and psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinal relations among child maltreatment, emotion regulation, peer acceptance and rejection, and psychopathology. METHODS: Data were collected on 215 maltreated and 206 nonmaltreated children (ages 6-12 years) from low-income families. Children were evaluated by camp counselors on emotion regulation and internalizing and externalizing symptomatology and were nominated by peers for peer acceptance and rejection. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling analyses revealed that experiencing neglect, physical and/or sexual abuse, multiple m

The experience of adolescent women living with spina bifida. Part II: Peer relationships.

Relationships are much more complex for those with disabilities than for those without disabilities. This study was part of a larger mixed-method investigation that explored comprehensive aspects of adaptation in adolescents with spina bifida (SB). The purpose of this qualitative component of the study was to explore the experiences of peer relationships in 31 adolescent women with SB. The participants were interviewed, and analysis was conducted for common themes. The five major themes and one subtheme were peers without disabilities (subtheme: peers with disabilities), normalization, challen
