The role of nutrition in dermatologic diseases: facts and controversies.

Many dermatologic diseases are chronic with no definitive cure. For some diseases, the etiology is not completely understood, with treatment being difficult and associated with side effects. In such cases, patients may try alternative treatments to prevent onset, reduce symptom severity, or prevent reoccurrence of a disease. Dietary modification, through supplementation and exclusion, is an extremely popular treatment modality for patients with dermatologic conditions. It is, therefore, important for dermatologists to be aware of the growing body of literature pertaining to nutrition and skin

Cognitive effects of nutritional deficiency.

Deficiencies of various nutrients, primarily vitamins, impair cognition. The link is strongest for vitamin B12, thiamine, and niacin. Yet even for these, the role of mild "subclinical" or multiple deficiencies in the genesis of mental dysfunction is unclear. Most information in this field is based on animal studies often poorly applicable to the human condition or on clinical pathology complicated by advanced age, alcoholism, and intercurrent disease. There is a need for well controlled, double-blind, prospective trials to elucidate the cognitive effects of malnutrition.

The biology of folate in depression: implications for nutritional hypotheses of the psychoses.

Folate deficiency is a common occurrence in psychiatric disorders, whether organic or functional, particularly in depressive illness. We have shown that folate deficiency is a common association of depressive symptoms in a variety of settings including primary endogenous or non-endogenous depression, and in alcoholic, lithium-treated and anorexic patients. Possible pathogenetic mediating mechanisms for this association are methylation and hydroxylation and the implications for nutritional hypotheses of the psychoses are discussed. We suggest that folate deficiency, with or without deficiencies

[Knowledge of the urogenital diseases in the work of Gaspar Casal, "natural and medical history of the Principality of Asturias" (1762)].

OBJECTIVES: Gaspar Casal (Gerona, 1680, Madrid, 1759) made most of his medical work in Oviedo (Asturias, Spain), where he lived for thirty-four years, before his return to Madrid as a doctor for the Royal House. Fruits of this work is the book "Natural and medical history of the Principality of Asturias" (Madrid, 1762), considered the best exponent of the Spanish medicine of the 18th century, and where the "disease of the rose", known later as pellagra or hypovitaminosis B, was first described in. METHODS: Study of the life of Gaspar Casal and analysis of "Natural and medical history of the P…
