The effects of temporal asymmetry on the detection and perception of short chirps.

There is an intriguing contrast between the physiological response to short frequency sweeps in the brainstem and the perception produced by these sounds. Dau et al. (2000) demonstrated that optimised chirps with increasing instantaneous frequency (up-chirps), designed to compensate for spatial dispersion along the cochlea, enhance wave V of the auditory brainstem response (ABR), by synchronising excitation of all frequency channels across the basilar membrane. Down-chirps, that is up-chirps reversed in time, increase cochlear phase delays and therefore result in a poor ABR wave V. In this stu

Inter-relationship between different psychoacoustic measures assumed to be related to the cochlear active mechanism.

The active mechanism in the cochlea is thought to depend on the integrity of the outer hair cells (OHCs). Cochlear hearing loss is usually associated with damage to both inner hair cells (IHCs) and OHCs, with the latter resulting in a reduction in or complete loss of the function of the active mechanism. It is believed that the active mechanism contributes to the sharpness of tuning on the basilar membrane (BM) and is also responsible for compressive input-output functions on the BM. Hence, one would expect a close relationship between measures of sharpness of tuning and measures of compressio

Effects of cochlear impairment and equivalent-threshold masking on psychoacoustic tuning curves.

Psychoacoustic tuning curves in simultaneous masking were measured in three groups: listeners with hearing impairment of primarily cochlear origin, normal listeners with equivalent-threshold masking (ETM) and normal listeners tested in the quiet. ETM was produced by presenting a continuous back-ground noise that was spectrally shaped to yield masked thresholds within 3 dB of each impaired listener's quiet thresholds. For the tuning curves, the level of a 50-Hz-wide noise band necessary to mask a 10-dB SL tone was measured for six masker frequencies. Results under ETM indicate that the shape of

The contribution of central auditory factors to auditory disability.

Auditory disability increases with both hearing threshold level and age. It is often suggested that some or most of the age effect in auditory disability is underpinned by deficits in central auditory function. A sample of 240 individuals aged between 50 and 75 years was examined to provide a balance across the major variables of hearing level and age. The central auditory indices investigated were: the binaural masking difference, the effects of dichotic competition on the staggered spondaic word tests, the binaural advantage for dichotically presented words, the binaural advantage for dichot

A scoping review of the spatial perception of tinnitus and a guideline for the minimum reporting of tinnitus location.

Tinnitus spatial localisation is an essential attribute of tinnitus perception and how it is separated from other ongoing neural activity. A scoping review was undertaken to determine how tinnitus localisation is reported, the role of the perceived spatial location of tinnitus on neurophysiology and if sound presented spatially can change tinnitus perception. Following reading of the full-text articles and including articles from reference lists, 46 articles were included for review. Six themes emerged from the results. 1. Where tinnitus was localised. 2. The effects of tinnitus on localisatio

Perceptual learning improves visual functions in patients with albinistic bilateral amblyopia: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Several visual functions are impaired in patients with oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) associated to albinistic bilateral amblyopia (ABA). OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed at exploring whether perceptual learning (PL) can improve visual functions in albinism. METHOD: Six patients and six normal sighted controls, were trained in a contrast detection task with lateral masking. Participants were asked to choose which of the two intervals contained a foveally presented low-contrast Gabor patch. Targets were presented between higher contrast collinear flankers with equal spatial frequ

Which People with Specific Language Impairment have Auditory Processing Deficits?

An influential theory attributes developmental disorders of language and literacy to low-level auditory perceptual difficulties. However, evidence to date has been inconsistent and contradictory. We investigated whether this mixed picture could be explained in terms of heterogeneity in the language-impaired population. In Experiment 1, the behavioural responses of 16 people with specific language impairment (SLI) and 16 control listeners (aged 10 to 19 years) to auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) stimuli and unmasked tones indicated that a subgroup of people with SLI are less able to

Inter-modality influence on the brainstem using an arithmetic exercise.

This study investigates the inter-modality influence on the brainstem using a mental task (arithmetic exercise). Frequency Following Responses were recorded in quiet and noise, across four stimuli conditions (No Task, Easy, Medium, and Difficult). For the No Task, subjects were instructed to direct their attention to the presented speech vowel while no mental task was performed. For the Easy, Medium, and Difficult conditions, subjects were instructed to direct their attention to the mental task while ignoring simultaneously presented speech vowel /a/. Results from this study suggest that top-d

Neural dynamics of breaking continuous flash suppression.

Sensory input to the human visual system often becomes accessible to cognition and overt report during processing. We investigated neural precursors of conscious vision using EEG recordings and the popular breaking continuous flash suppression (bCFS) paradigm. In this technique, a mask consisting of high-contrast dynamic patterns is presented to one eye, predominating over a target stimulus presented to the other eye. The time needed for the target stimulus to overcome the suppression is thought to reflect the transition from unconscious to conscious perception. In bCFS trials with slow respon

Perceptual Competition Promotes Suppression of Reward Salience in Behavioral Selection and Neural Representation.

Visual attentional selection is influenced by the value of objects. Previous studies have demonstrated that reward-associated items lead to rapid distraction and associated behavioral costs, which are difficult to override with top-down control. However, it has not been determined whether a perceptually competitive environment could render the reward-driven distraction more susceptible to top-down suppression. Here, we trained both genders of human subjects to associate two orientations with high and low magnitudes of reward. After training, we collected fMRI data while the subjects performed

Audiomotor Perceptual Training Enhances Speech Intelligibility in Background Noise.

Sensory and motor skills can be improved with training, but learning is often restricted to practice stimuli. As an exception, training on closed-loop (CL) sensorimotor interfaces, such as action video games and musical instruments, can impart a broad spectrum of perceptual benefits. Here we ask whether computerized CL auditory training can enhance speech understanding in levels of background noise that approximate a crowded restaurant. Elderly hearing-impaired subjects trained for 8 weeks on a CL game that, like a musical instrument, challenged them to monitor subtle deviations between predic

[The study of acoustically evoked short latency negative responses in normal guinea pigs].

OBJECTIVE: To compare acoustically evoked short latency negative responses (ASNR) elicited from normal and profound hearing loss guinea pig ears and to confirm their vestibular nuclei origination. METHODS: Forty healthy guinea pigs were employed in the experiment, which were randomly divided into the control group (8 subjects, 16 ears), the masking group (16 subjects, 32 ears) and the deafened group (16 subjects, 32 ears). Air conductive white noise was chosen for masking. Masking dilemma was avoidable by an appropriate 15 dB gap between stimulus and masking sound. Both the masking group and

Phosphene-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation of occipital but not parietal cortex suppresses stimulus visibility.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied over the occipital lobe approximately 100 ms after the onset of a stimulus decreases its visibility if it appears in the location of the phosphene. Because phosphenes can also be elicited by stimulation of the parietal regions, we asked if the same procedure that is used to reduce visibility of stimuli with occipital TMS will lead to decreased stimulus visibility when TMS is applied to parietal regions. TMS was randomly applied at 0-130 ms after the onset of the stimulus in steps of 10 ms in occipital and parietal regions. Participants responded

Am I seeing my hand? Visual appearance and knowledge of controllability both contribute to the visual capture of a person's own body.

When confronted with complex visual scenes in daily life, how do we know which visual information represents our own hand? We investigated the cues used to assign visual information to one's own hand. Wrist tendon vibration elicits an illusory sensation of wrist movement. The intensity of this illusion attenuates when the actual motionless hand is visually presented. Testing what kind of visual stimuli attenuate this illusion will elucidate factors contributing to visual detection of one's own hand. The illusion was reduced when a stationary object was shown, but only when participants knew it

Higher sensitivity of human auditory nerve fibers to positive electrical currents.

Most contemporary cochlear implants (CIs) stimulate the auditory nerve with trains of amplitude-modulated, symmetric biphasic pulses. Although both polarities of a pulse can depolarize the nerve fibers and generate action potentials, it remains unknown which of the two (positive or negative) phases has the stronger effect. Understanding the effects of pulse polarity will help to optimize the stimulation protocols and to deliver the most relevant information to the implant listeners. Animal experiments have shown that cathodic (negative) current flows are more effective than anodic (positive) o

Effects of hearing impairment and presentation level on masking period patterns for Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes.

Masking period patterns (MPPs) for Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes containing equal-amplitude harmonics of a 100-Hz fundamental were determined for 5-ms tonal probes at 4,000 and 1,000 Hz. Maskers consisted of harmonics 2-50 (200-5,000 Hz bandwidth) for 4,000-Hz probes and harmonics 2-20 (200-2,000 Hz) for 1,000-Hz signals. Masked thresholds were determined for probe onsets 153, 155.5, 158, 160.5, and 163 ms following masker onset (masker duration=460 ms). Overall, results were similar for both probe frequencies. For listeners with normal hearing, MPPs for positive Schroeder-phase complexes

[Functional screening evaluation of hearing aids].

A complaint about a malfunctioning hearing aid (HA) usually will require thorough testing of all aspects of hearing aid functions by the hearing aid dispenser. However, ENT physicians can also detect defects easily by following the simple screening procedure described here. Before testing the HA function, the following questions should be answered: Are the body of the hearing aid and ear mold intact? Is the ear canal free of irritation and is the acoustic isolation of the ear canal by the HA sufficient? A rough estimate of HA function can be accomplished by covering the HA with the hand. If th

Hemispheric asymmetry in the processing of high and low spatial frequencies: a facial recognition task.

The research investigated the relationship between spatial frequency and visual field in a facial recognition task. Faces of neutral affect (Ekman, 1979) were tachistoscopically presented to the right or left visual field. The faces were presented alone, or masked with square wave gratings of 1, 24, or 48 cycles/degree, for a duration of 10 msec. Accuracy in recognizing each target face from a group of five served as the dependent measure. Subjects were 15 males and 15 females. ANOVA results included a frequency x visual field interaction effect (p less than .001). As was hypothesized, LVF err
