Porphyromonas (Bacteroides) endodontalis: its role in endodontal infections.

Porphyromonas endodontalis (formerly Bacteroides endodontalis) is a black-pigmented anaerobic Gram-negative rod which is associated with endodontal infections. It has been isolated from infected dental root canals and submucous abscesses of endodontal origin. The presence of P. endodontalis in infected dental root canals has been correlated with symptoms of an acute infection. It is occasionally found on oral mucous membranes and periodontal pockets. P. endodontalis has shown relatively low virulence in experimental monoinfections. In anaerobic mixed infections it can play an essential role. D

Pyogenic Hepatic Abscess in an Immunocompetent Patient With Poor Oral Health and COVID-19 Infection.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic hepatic abscess (PHA) is a collection of pus in the liver caused by bacterial infection of the liver parenchyma. PHA is more common in immunosuppressed individuals and those with diabetes mellitus, cancer, and liver transplant. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of PHA with Fusobacterium nucleatum in an immunocompetent patient with poor oral health, history of diverticulitis, and recent COVID-19 infection whose only symptoms were chest pain and a 4-week history of fever and malaise. The source of infection in this patient was likely dental caries and periodontal di

Amplifications of AURKA and AURKB in a Burkitt lymphoma immunodeficiency-associated type: a case report.

In equatorial Brazil, the association of Burkitt lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus manifests at high rates. Here, we report, for the first time, amplifications of aurora kinase genes (AURKA/B) in a patient with a history of periodontal abscess and the presence of a remaining nodule, diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus, and /HIV positive. The patient was a 38-year-old man who presented with a 2-week-old severe jaw pain and a 3-day-old severe bilateral headache. He had a history of human papilloma virus. Interphase FISH analysis showed AURKA and AURKB amplification. The patient'

A case of odontogenic orbital cellulitis causing blindness by severe tension orbit.

We report a very rare case of odontogenic orbital cellulitis causing blindness by severe tension orbit. A 41-yr old male patient had visited the hospital due to severe periorbital swelling and nasal stuffiness while he was treated for a periodontal abscess. He was diagnosed with odontogenic sinusitis and orbital cellulitis, and treated with antibiotics. The symptoms were aggravated and emergency sinus drainage was performed. On the next day, a sudden decrease in vision occurred with findings of ischemic optic neuropathy and central retinal artery occlusion. Deformation of the eyeball posterior

Infection due to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans: 15 cases and review.

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a small fastidious gram-negative coccobacillus that fails to grow on MacConkey's agar. Slow growth in broth may lead to delays in diagnosis. First described in 1912, A. actinomycetemcomitans has been recognized since 1962 as capable of causing serious infections in humans. Such infections include periodontal infection, soft tissue abscess (often in association with Actinomyces species), and systemic infection, most commonly endocarditis. Fifteen cases and a review of the English-language literature are presented to define the epidemiology and clinical fe

Veillonella Intrapulmonary Abscess With Empyema.

A lung abscess is characterized as a clinical ailment arising from the localized suppurative necrosis of lung parenchyma. This condition primarily results from the complications of aspiration pneumonia due to anaerobic microorganisms originating from the oral cavity. Clinically, patients typically manifest symptoms such as fever, malaise, and a productive cough persisting over several weeks. The majority of lung abscess cases acquired within the community stem from anaerobic bacterial infections, often exhibiting a polymicrobial nature. We present a 51-year-old female with intrapulmonary absce

Susceptibility of endodontic pathogens to antibiotics in patients with symptomatic apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate susceptibility of predominant endodontic pathogens isolated from teeth with symptomatic apical periodontitis to most commonly prescribed antibiotics. METHODS: Among 58 patients with symptomatic apical periodontitis, 47 and 11 cases were caused by primary and secondary root canal infection, respectively. The microbial samples were taken either from the root canals (35 cases) or by aspiration from apical abscesses (23 cases). Culture methods were used to identify the microorganisms present in the samples. Antibiotic susceptibilities of all iso

Use of the feed additive sodium hexametaphosphate to prevent dental calculus in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.).

Dental calculus and associated periodontal disease are serious clinical problems in captive squirrel monkeys. Calculus begins to appear as early as 2 years of age, with subsequent development of periodontal disease, dental abscessation, tooth loss and other sequelae. When used as a feed additive, sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) retards the growth of calculus on previously cleaned teeth in rhesus monkeys, lemurs, and other species. We wanted to determine whether HMP would reduce dental calculus in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) whose teeth had not been pre-cleaned. The study animals were divide

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans: From the Oral Cavity to the Heart Valves.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetecomitans) is a Gram-negative bacterial species that is an essential component of the oral microbiota. Due to its aggregative properties, it plays a role in the pathogenesis of human diseases. The presence of the surface proteins Fim, Briae, and microvesicles enables the bacterium to adhere to the epithelial surface and the tooth's surface. The presence of leukotoxin A (LtxA), which plays an important role in the pathogenicity of the bacterium, has been associated with both periodontitis and the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A. acti

Speech pattern improvement following gingivectomy of excess palatal tissue.

BACKGROUND: Speech disruption secondary to excessive gingival tissue has received scant attention in periodontal literature. Although a few articles have addressed the causes of this condition, documentation and scientific explanation of treatment outcomes are virtually non-existent. This case report describes speech pattern improvements secondary to periodontal surgery and provides a concise review of linguistic and phonetic literature pertinent to the case. METHODS: A 21-year-old white female with a history of gingival abscesses secondary to excessive palatal tissue presented for treatment.

Endodontic Infections and the Extent of Antibiotic Overprescription among Italian Dental Practitioners.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the pattern of antibiotic prescription for endodontic infections (EIs) among Italian dental practitioners (DPs) and to explore the role of potential predictors of antibiotic overprescription. A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted between 1 April and 30 October 2019 using a structured questionnaire. Information was gathered on demographics, professional characteristics, and practices regarding antibiotic prescription for both therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. Of the 1,250 invited DPs, 563 answered the general questionnaire (response

Heat-killed Lancefieldella Rimae Induces Bone Resorption by Promoting Osteoclast Differentiation.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis, mainly caused by bacterial infection in the dental pulp, is often accompanied by abscess, periapical inflammation, and alveolar bone loss. Lancefieldella rimae has been detected in the root canals of patients with apical periodontitis. Here, we investigated whether L. rimae is associated with bone resorption. METHODS: L. rimae was anaerobically cultured and heat-killed (HKLr). A mouse calvarial implantation model was used to determine the bone resorption in vivo. Committed osteoclasts prepared from C57BL/6 wild-type or Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2)-deficient

Virulence factors of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

A. actinomycetemcomitans has clearly adapted well to its environs; its armamentarium of virulence factors (Table 2) ensures its survival in the oral cavity and enables it to promote disease. Factors that promote A. actinomycetemcomitans colonization and persistence in the oral cavity include adhesins, bacteriocins, invasins and antibiotic resistance. It can interact with and adhere to all components of the oral cavity (the tooth surface, other oral bacteria, epithelial cells or the extracellular matrix). The adherence is mediated by a number of distinct adhesins that are elements of the cell s
