Cell-to-cell communication--periodontal regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Although regenerative treatment options are available, periodontal regeneration is still regarded as insufficient and unpredicta … hen the periodontal attachment system is traumatically compromised? Minor mechanical insults to the periodontium may spontaneously heal, and the tissues can structurally and functionally be restored. But what happens to the periodontium in case of periodontitis, an infectious disease, after periodontal treatment? A non-regenerative treatment of periodontitis n …

Progressive cervical root resorption related to tetracycline root conditioning.

Root resorption is reported as a microscopic finding in trials attempting to regenerate the periodontium using tetracycline or citric acid root conditioning. This report deals with a case of progressive cervical root resorption in a female patient who had been successfully treated by tetracycline root conditioning. The article emphasizes the possibility of this adverse effect, and discusses a possible mechanism inducing this phenomenon.

[Biochemical aspects of orthodontic movement: recent findings and trends].

The orthodontic tooth movement produces physical and biochemical reactions in the periodontium. Tooth movements can be expressed by cell activation inducing bone resorption and remodelling. Substances as cAMP, cGMP, neuropeptides, prostaglandins and ormons play a basic role in this mechanism as mediators and modulators of the cellular responses. The Authors review the possibility to control the degree of the tooth movement acting on this biochemical process.

The biologic width--periodontal-restorative relationship.

An important relationship should exist between the periodontist and restorative dentist. Periodontics and restorative dentistry should not be divisible and all forms of restorations, from a simple filling to a complex precision-retained bridge, should be performed with the health and biology of the periodontium in mind. A very crucial concept which should be borne in the mind of every restorative dentist is the concept of biologic width.

Aging or disease? Periodontal changes and treatment considerations in the older dental patient.

The segment of our society over age 65 is growing, and many more of these people are keeping their teeth for a longer period of time. This suggests that there will be additional need for periodontal therapy in the future, but it also implies that disease-related events must be distinguished from age-related changes. Changes in the periodontium with aging are reviewed, and periodontal disease management strategies in the older patient are discussed.

Intraligamentary anaesthesia: a local anaesthesia technique in equine dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The injection of a local anaesthetic into the periodontal ligament (PDL) to achieve desensitisation of the pulp, periodontium, and adjacent tissues is a well-established technique in human dentistry, particularly in paediatric patients. This approach, commonly referred to as intraligamental or intraligamentary anaesthesia (ILA), has been widely adopted due to its effectiveness and relative simplicity. The aims of the present publication were: (1) to provide a review of the literature, (2) to describe an ILA technique adapted by the authors for use in equine dentistry, and (3) to ev…

The Role of GH/IGF Axis in Dento-Alveolar Complex from Development to Aging and Therapeutics: A Narrative Review.

The GH/IGF axis is a major regulator of bone formation and resorption and is essential to the achievement of normal skeleton growth and homeostasis. Beyond its key role in bone physiology, the GH/IGF axis has also major pleiotropic endocrine and autocrine/paracrine effects on mineralized tissues throughout life. This article aims to review the literature on GH, IGFs, IGF binding proteins, and their respective receptors in dental tissues, both epithelium (enamel) and mesenchyme (dentin, pulp, and tooth-supporting periodontium). The present review re-examines and refines the expression of the el…

Concise Review: Periodontal Tissue Regeneration Using Stem Cells: Strategies and Translational Considerations.

Periodontitis is a widespread disease characterized by inflammation-induced progressive damage to the tooth-supporting structures until tooth loss occurs. The regeneration of lost/damaged support tissue in the periodontium, including the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum, is an ambitious purpose of periodontal regenerative therapy and might effectively reduce periodontitis-caused tooth loss. The use of stem cells for periodontal regeneration is a hot field in translational research and an emerging potential treatment for periodontitis. This concise review summarizes the regener…

Matrix metalloproteinases and inflammatory cytokines in oral fluid of patients with chronic generalized periodontitis and various construction materials.

We present the results of comparative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2, MMP-8, MMP-9; IL-1β and IL-6; tissue inhibitors of MMP (TIMP-1, TIMP-2), and TNF-α. The object of study was oral fluid of practically healthy subjects with intact periodontium and patients with chronic generalized periodontitis with various structural materials of dental restorations. It was found that MMP-9 in oral fluid could be considered as a marker of chronic generalized periodontitis irrespective of the presence or absence of metal dental restorations. The level of MMP-8 surpassed …

Complications and treatment errors involving periodontal tissues related to orthodontic therapy.

In this review, typical clinical complications involving periodontal tissues are illustrated that can be encountered in conjunction with orthodontic therapy (OT). Special considerations are given for various clinical scenarios, such as the patient presenting in periodontal health, with periodontitis, or with mucogingival conditions. While some of the complications are seen as common side effects of OT, other, more severe, problems that could have been avoided may be viewed as treatment errors. Recommendations are made on how to prevent these complications, based on the currently available evid

Neutrophil N1 and N2 Subsets and Their Possible Association with Periodontitis: A Scoping Review.

Periodontitis is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by dysbiotic changes that affect the subgingival microbiota. During periodontitis, neutrophils play a central role in the initial recognition of bacteria, and their number increases with the appearance of the first signs of periodontal inflammation. Recent evidence has led to the proposition that neutrophils can also functionally polarize, determining selective activity patterns related to different diseases. Two well-defined neutrophil phenotypes have been described, the pro-inflammatory N1 subset and the suppressor N2 subset. To date

Influence of periodontitis on levels of autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis patients: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis (PD) is a dysbiotic disease of tooth-supporting structures that has been associated with various systemic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To date, evidence demonstrated increased prevalence of RA among PD patients and postulated PD to have a role in the development of autoantibodies in RA patients. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to assess the available evidence to ascertain the effect of PD on levels of autoantibodies in the serum, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of RA patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The systematic

Tissue engineering in periodontal tissue.

Periodontitis, a recognized disease worldwide, is bacterial infection-induced inflammation of the periodontal tissues that results in loss of alveolar bone. Once it occurs, damaged tissue cannot be restored to its original form, even if decontaminating treatments are performed. For more than half a century, studies have been conducted to investigate true periodontal regeneration. Periodontal regeneration is the complete reconstruction of the damaged attachment apparatus, which contains both hard tissue (alveolar bone and cementum) and soft tissue (periodontal ligament). Several treatments, inc

An overview of periodontal microsurgery.

Optical magnification has broadened the horizons of dentistry in general and periodontics in particular. Improvement in visual acuity, made possible through optical magnification, is becoming an integral part of modern dental practices. Through the quiet trend toward microdentistry, the authors have used microsurgical principles to improve visual acuity and the precision of existing surgical techniques to broaden the scope and character of periodontics, with knowledge and technology borrowed from medicine. The effect of periodontal microsurgery may include more predictable therapeutic results,

[Polymorphonuclear neutrophilic granulocytes and the defense and damage of periodontal tissues].

The relationship of neutrophil to the periodontal tissue can be equated to the image of a double-edged blade. The role of the polymorphonuclear cells in the containment of gingival bacteria and their products must be weighed against the localized tissue destruction that may be due to the extracellular release of lysosomal enzymes and oxygen derived radicals. It seems reasonable to suggest that the role of neutrophils in the gingival tissue is primarily a defensive one. Therefore, several factors such as the entity of intrinsic activation, the quantity and quality of stimuli, as well as many ph
