BACKGROUND: Disease burden in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is difficult to estimate. We evaluate whether peritoneal cell-free tumor DNA can be used as a measure of disease burden.

A ventral marsupialisation technique is described which was used successfully to manage gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) in two large breed dogs. The procedure allowed the stomach to be completely and rapidly emptied and lavaged without peritoneal contamination. Drainage was maintained in the postoperative period for both dogs and the technique was expected to result in a permanent ventral gastropexy.

After an accidental injury of the bowel during a hysterectomy, the patients peritoneal cavity was irrigated for disinfection with a solution containing a mercury-compound. The patient died 40 days after this "peritoneal lavage" with a 0.2% solution of mercury-II-oxycanide. The disinfection with the toxic compound during operation can be judged as a medical mistreatment leading to death of the patient. BACKGROUND: A 17-year-old male, with a history of bladder augmentation enterocystoplasty 7 years earlier, presented with nausea, emesis and acute abdomen.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, blood and urine culture, and abdominal and pelvic CT cystography.
DIAGNOSIS: Acute abdomen from perforation of bladder augmentation.
MANAGEMENT: Support and stabilization, bladder decompression, and broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, followed by immediate exploratory laparotomy with repair of enterocystoplasty and peritoneal lavage.

An 11-year-old spayed female American pit bull terrier mixed breed dog was presented because of hyporexia and abdominal distension. The dog had large-volume free peritoneal gas on imaging and septic neutrophilic exudate on abdominocentesis. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a ruptured splenic mass draining purulent material. A splenectomy was performed and the abdomen was lavaged. Culture samples grew an anaerobic Gram-positive rod. The dog was discharged 4 days after surgery with no residual problems noted 1 week later. Cyanide and thiocyanate was measured in blood and in peritoneal lavage solution in patients with advanced or terminal renal failure. The behavior of these substances was comparable to that of normal people. Our finding does not support the hypothesis of an indirect toxicity of urea via its previous conversion to cyanate. Cyanate ion has not been implicated in the toxic status of chronic uraemia.

We report a case of Lasiodiplodia theobromae pneumonia in a patient who died 14 days after cadaveric-liver transplantation. His condition was complicated by Enterococcus faecium peritonitis. Direct microscopy analysis of the bronchoalveolar lavage specimens showed septate hyphae. A dematiaceous mold was recovered and identified as L. theobromae by microscopic morphology and EF1alpha gene sequencing.

This registry-based Swedish study investigated results at a national level to assess safety in real-world scenarios.
