The clock face guide to peroneal intraneural ganglia: critical "times" and sites for accurate diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to exploit the normal nature of peroneal nerve anatomy to identify constant magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) patterns in peroneal intraneural ganglia. DESIGN: This study is designed as a retrospective clinical study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of 25 patients with peroneal intraneural ganglia were analyzed and were compared to those of 25 patients with extraneural ganglia and 25 individuals with normal knees. All specimens were interpreted as left-sided. Using conventional axial images, the position of the common peroneal nerve and either intraneural

Common peroneal nerve injury during varicose vein operation.

Common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury produces considerable and serious disability. The nerve is most frequently damaged as a result of trauma (sharp or blunt, traction, fracture, laceration, and avulsion). Less often iatrogenic injury is the cause of damage (application of tight plaster, retraction injury, division during operation). Even rarer is the complete or partial division of CPN during varicose vein operations. In the UK, on average 34 patients every year begin legal action against their medical attendants in connection with the treatment of varicose veins, on a background of an estimate

Management of peroneal nerve injuries associated with knee dislocations.

Peroneal nerve palsy after knee dislocation is a serious problem, and neurolysis at the time of knee reconstruction does not always result in return of peroneal nerve function. In light of the current state of microneural surgery, and the potential to reconstruct lengthy nerve defects, this review addresses the appropriate evaluation of peroneal nerve palsy and provides recommendations regarding surgical treatment.

Bifocal Tibial Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma Responsive to Vincristine Therapy: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare locally aggressive vascular endothelial-derived spindle cells neoplasm. Herein, we report a rare case of bifocal tibial kaposiform hemangioendothelioma. CASE REPORT A 9-year-old female presented with a 2-year history of pain and swelling in the left leg. The patient had a high plasma level of the D-dimer and fibrinogen. Radiography revealed a centric lytic lesion on the left proximal tibial metaphysis and an eccentric lateral distal tibial metaphyseal. Histopathologic examination of the sample taken from the distal tibia revealed a dense spi

Foot drop caused by a movable cystic mass during knee motion.

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury due to a movable cystic mass during knee motion is a rare neuropathy, which can be diagnosed precisely using a dynamic ultrasonogram. OBJECTIVE: To present a case with foot drop and common peroneal neuropathy that involved a movable cystic mass during knee flexion adjacent to the proximal tibiofibular joint. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 47-year-old female was referred to our institute for a right foot drop. Common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury was confirmed by an electrophysiologic study. Upon a dynamic ultrasonographic study during knee flexion, a cystic mass was

Peripheral neuropathy in patients with beta-thalassaemia.

As some patients with beta-thalassaemia manifested neurological signs, clinical and electrophysiological investigations were carried out on 53 thalassaemic patients and 29 healthy control subjects. Twenty per cent of the patients showed clinical and electrophysiological findings of a mild peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy, mainly of the lower limbs. The clinical symptoms were numbness, pins and needles sensations, muscular cramps, myalgia and muscle weakness. The electrophysiological abnormalities were manifested by decreased motor conduction velocity (MCV) and prolonged F-wave latencies of t

Neurologic Complications of Endocrine Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the neurologic manifestations of endocrine disorders with respect to pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Studies have further elucidated the mechanisms by which endocrine disorders affect neurologic function, from peripheral nervous system manifestations of diabetes to central nervous system complications of pituitary apoplexy. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists used to treat obesity and diabetes are associated with an increased risk of developing diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy an

Trends and Technologies in Rehabilitation of Foot Drop: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Foot Drop (FD) is a condition, which is very commonly found in post-stoke patients; however it can also be seen in patients with multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. It is a sign of neuromuscular damage caused by the weakness of the muscles. There are various approaches of FD's rehabilitation, such as physiotherapy, surgery, and the use of technological devices. Recently, researchers have worked on developing various technologies to enhance assisting and rehabilitation of FD. AREAS COVERED: This review analyzes different types of technologies available for FD. This include de

Peroneal nerve palsy caused by a synovial cyst of the proximal tibiofibular joint: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

Synovial cyst of the proximal tibiofibular joint is a very rare condition, for which there is no consensus regarding treatment. Two macroscopic forms may be encountered: extraneural cysts and intraneural cysts. We present the cases of two patients who had synovial cysts of proximal tibiofibular joint that caused peroneal nerve palsy. We discussed the special features of synovial cysts and reviewed the literature. We considered the best treatment of synovial cysts originating from proximal tibiofibular joint and causing peroneal nerve palsy to be a total surgical removal as soon as possible aft

[Determination of the exposure concentration of propylene oxide to produce neuropathy in rats].

Although propylene oxide, which is similar in chemical structure to ethylene oxide, is expected to produce neuropathy, there is no convincing evidence of the degeneration of the peripheral nervous system. To determine the exposure concentration of propylene oxide necessary to produce neuropathy in male Wistar rats, we subjected them to repeated exposures of propylene oxide at concentrations of 500, 750, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm. The test rats were subjected to a single 6 hour exposure of propylene oxide at a concentration of 1500 parts per million 5 times a week for 3 weeks. They developed a si
