The possibility of using the peroxidase method of the enzyme immunoassay for the detection of C. perfringens cells in the culture fluid of strains, as well as in affected tissues in cases of anaerobic gas gangrene infection, has been shown. This method is highly specific, convenient and takes but 1.5 hrs.

The effects of the chronic section of the VIth nerve have been studied in kittens with the help of the horseradish peroxidase intra-axonal retrograde tracing method. Two months following the section of the VIth nerve, only 50% of the abducens motoneuron population was left. However, shapes, somata sizes and cell distribution through the nucleus of the remaining neurons were similar to those shown by controls. Functional implications of the findings are discussed.

The aerobic oxidation of rifamycin SV to rifamycin S was catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase. The oxidation rate increased with increasing pH. The oxidation was inhibited by catalase, but superoxide dismutase enhanced the oxidation rate of rifamycin SV. Whole blood glutathione peroxidase was found significantly increased relative to controls in a group of 21 black patients with sickle cell anaemia. One control group consisted of 15 normal black subjects. A second control group, consisting of 21 black patients with various abnormal haemoglobins including alpha-thalassaemia, also showed a tendency to enhanced glutathione peroxidase activity, confirming previous reports that elevated glutathione peroxidase levels are secondary to a variety of haemolytic conditions, rather than typical of sickle cell anaemia.

Peripheral leucocytes obtained from five patients with clinical histories and funduscopic findings typical of the juvenile form of the so-called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCLF) (synonym: Spielmeyer-Vogt disease) were assayed for peroxidase activity and examined by electron microscopy. There has been a need to easily quantitate the incidence of eosinophil colonies within soft agar cultures. This has been realized by layering of the agar with benzidine dihydrochloride that permits detection of peroxidase activity in cells. Eosinophil colonies can be specifically identified by the addition to the substrate of potassium cyanide, an inhibitor of enzyme activity in neutrophils and monocytes. The enumeration of eosinophil colonies can be accomplished by scanning fresh or embedded cultures with low power magnification.
