Emotional stresses and psychological disorders seem to be concurrent factors in some cases of prurigo nodularis (PN), a chronic skin condition with a difficult therapeutic approach. In order to improve the therapeutic strategies, we performed a psychometric study on 20 patients affected by generalized and histological proven PN. Specific questionnaires were employed to examine the hypotheses (General Health Questionnaire, State Trait Anxiety Inventory - form Y, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). The results show that symptoms of anxiety and depression associa

This study investigated the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Revised (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) and the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991) with regard to each instrument's utility for discriminating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from depression and social phobia in a sample of college students with mixed civilian trauma exposure. Participants were 90 trauma-exposed undergraduates (16 male, 74 female) classified into one of four groups: PTSD, depressive disorders, social phobia, and well-adjusted. For both the PAI and the …

Internal consistency reliability estimates were determined for the Wiener and Harmon (1948) Subtle and Obvious scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) with a group of psychiatric inpatients. Except for Subtle Scale 3 (Hy), Subtle scale reliabilities were unacceptably low, ranging from .32 to .59. In each case, inclusion of the Subtle items attenuated the reliability of the corresponding Full clinical scale. Removing the Subtle items resulted in comparable reliabilities across all Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) scales, ranging from .75 to .92…

INTRODUCTION: Some individuals are more susceptible to recalling false information about events that never happened in their life. Nevertheless, there are several factors, such as personality characteristics, that appear to be related to memory performance. Social anxiety also provokes memory deficits for events that happen to other people, because these individuals tend to focus on their own inner selves rather than on external signs.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the personality characteristics of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) on memory performance.
METHODS: I

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The personality profiles of patients with eating disorder have been extensively investigated, but those of people in the general population with eating behavior problems need to be evaluated to assess the relationship between personality, health behavior and level of overall well-being in non-clinical samples.
DESIGN: Temperament and character traits, reasons for over-eating, and the negative influence of functional dyspepsia on quality of life were measured by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), and Functional D

Ninety-three patients with panic disorder and mild or no agoraphobia were treated for their panic disorder by using either 11 sessions of individual cognitive-behavior therapy or imipramine. Before and after treatment, their panic disorder symptomatology was assessed, and a self-report measure was administered to measure personality disorder characteristics [Klein et al., 1990: Wisconsin Personality Disorders Inventory]. In addition, some patients received this personality assessment again after six monthly maintenance sessions. Both treatments were equally effective in reducing panic disorder

This study investigated the personality disorders of 21 recent-onset Bipolar Disorder patients using the revised Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II; Millon, 1987). Personality disorder assessments, conducted after patients' clinical symptoms had settled, indicated that 17 patients received at least one MCMI-II personality disorder diagnosis with a trend toward multiple diagnoses. Narcissistic, Antisocial, and Histrionic personality disorders were diagnosed most frequently and were the scales most elevated. Schizoid and Compulsive personality disorders were the scales least elevated

The Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) are often used to screen for pathological narcissism but have rarely been validated against a clinician-administered diagnostic interview. Our study evaluated the convergent validity of the PNI and NPI against a diagnostic interview for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) in a clinical population. We used data from a psychiatric outpatient center located in Switzerland (n = 123). Correlations between PNI/NPI and NPD ranged between .299 and .498 (common variance 9.0-24.8%). The PNI and NPI should be…

This study explored the personality traits of 15 women who served as surrogate mothers in a California-based surrogacy program. Their satisfaction with their service providers, i.e., the program director, psychologist, and medical doctor, were explored. All had given birth to one or more children, and five had been a surrogate more than once. 13 used in vitro fertilization, with only two choosing artificial insemination. 15 subjects were given the NEO-R Personality Inventory, a global measure of normal personality traits. Analysis indicated that surrogates overall were very pleased with their …

The Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) trait Disconstraint is a personality dimension associated with behavioral control. Conceptualizations of this construct posit under-controlled, antisocial personality and over-controlled, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) features to manifest at its high and low poles, respectively. Robust empirical support has been reported for the posited high-end manifestations of this trait, as measured across versions of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) by the Disconstraint (DISC) scale. Empirical findings related to low-end…

Personality theorists have long predicted a relationship between personality traits and autonomic activation. In this study, 48 patients with panic disorder underwent personality assessment by questionnaire (Eysenck Personality Inventory: 48 patients) and by interview (Personality Disorders Examination: 35 patients). Ambulatory heart rate and activity were measured by the Vitalog method and were used as measures of activation and autonomic arousal. There was a significant positive correlation between histrionic traits and activity level and a significant negative correlation between sociabilit…

Craving plays an important role in the addictive behavior process. The impact of gender, emotional state and personality on craving, however, has been understudied. Ninety-six women and 86 men seeking treatment for substance dependence were investigated regarding the association between personality factors (assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory), depressive/anxiety symptomatology (assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory), and craving intensity (rated in the 7-day and the 24-hour periods prior to assessment). Recency of substance use and impulsivit

Sociotropy and autonomy are 2 personality dimensions related to an individual's vulnerability to depression (A. T. Beck, 1983). The Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (D. A. Clark, R. A. Steer, A. T. Beck, & L. Ross, 1995) and the Personal Style Inventory (C. J. Robins et al., 1994) were developed to assess these personality dimensions independent of each other. The present study is an examination of the relationship between the 2 scales and an attempt to specify the various factors that emerge when the items of the 2 scales are integrated. Participants (N = 514) responded to the Personal Style Invento
