Race, psychiatric comorbidity, and headache characteristics in patients in headache subspecialty treatment clinics.

OBJECTIVE: This research examined how race, psychiatric comorbidity, and headache characteristics are inter-related in patients with severe headache disorders. DESIGN: This study used a naturalistic cohort design and assessed 114 Black and 173 White patients receiving treatment in headache subspecialty clinics in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo, OH. Face-to-face interviews yielded headache and psychiatric diagnoses; 30-day daily diaries collected data on headache frequency, severity, and disability; and self-administered surveys obtained data on headache management self-efficacy,

Prevalence, nature, and severity of the psychiatric comorbidities and their impact on quality of life in adolescents with Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) are at increased risk for psychiatric comorbidities, personality traits, and abnormality in executive function. But studies on adolescents and their impact on quality of life are scarce in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed between August 2019 and October 2022 to compare the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in adolescents with JME and age and gender-matched healthy controls. After completing DSM-5 Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-5) initially in all patients, we measured the seve

Personality dimensions measured by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in subjects with social phobia.

The present study investigated personality dimensions by means of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in subjects with social phobia with or without a co-existing avoidant personality disorder. Thirty-one individuals with social phobia were recruited through advertisement and diagnosed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV I and II psychiatric disorders. Comorbid Axis I psychiatric disorders were diagnosed in 29% of the cases. Co-occurring personality disorders were present in 55.8% of the cases, and avoidant personality disorder in 48.4%. The social phobia subjects, as c

Association between peptic ulcer and personality disorders in a nationally representative US sample.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between peptic ulcer and a wide range of personality disorders in a large sample representative of the general population in the United States. METHODS: Data were drawn from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, on the basis of a face-to-face interview of more than 43,000 adults. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between self-reported "stomach ulcer" and personality disorders. RESULTS: All seven personality disorders assessed in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol

Effects of depression and borderline personality traits on psychological state and eating disorder symptomatology.

The incidence of current or lifetime affective disorder and borderline personality characteristics were measured in bulimia nervosa patients. The relationship of these variables to the severity of eating disorder symptomatology (Eating Disorder Inventory [EDI]) and general psychiatric symptoms (Hopkins Symptom Checklist [SCL]) was examined. Categorical diagnostic assessments of affective disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) were made by Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM-III-R (SCID-I and -II). Affective disorder diagnosis (both current and lifetime) strongly influenced EDI a

Zinc deficiency is common in several psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests a link between low zinc levels and depression. There is, however, little knowledge about zinc levels in older persons with other psychiatric diagnoses. Therefore, we explore the zinc status of elderly patients suffering from a wide range of psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Clinical data and blood samples for zinc analyzes were collected from 100 psychogeriatric patients over 64 of age. Psychiatric and cognitive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery and Aasberg Depression Rating Scale, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, the Mini-Mental Sta

MRI findings and Axis I and II psychiatric disorders after traumatic brain injury: a 30-year retrospective follow-up study.

We studied the association between psychiatric disorders and the presence and location of traumatic lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 58 patients, on average, 30 years after traumatic brain injury. Axis I psychiatric disorders that had begun after the injury were assessed with the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (version 2.1), and Axis II disorders with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. A 1.5-Tesla MRI scanner was used. One-third of the subjects had traumatic lesions visible on MRI. Only three psychiatric disorders, that is

Depressive personality: reliability, validity, and relation to dysthymia.

The reliability and validity of Schneider's (1958) construct of depressive personality was evaluated in a sample of 177 outpatients, who were administered structured diagnostic and family history interviews, an extensive battery of inventories, and a 6-month follow-up assessment. The criteria for depressive personality had moderate to good interrater reliability, internal consistency, and test-retest stability, and the assessment of depressive personality traits was not influenced by patients' clinical states. In addition, preliminary support for the convergent and discriminant validity of the

Psychiatric challenges in the first 6 years after traumatic brain injury: cross-sequential analyses of Axis I disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the preinjury rates of Axis I disorders and the prospective rates within the first 6 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI). DESIGN: Cross-sectional, longitudinal, and cross-sequential. SETTING: Community-based research and training center. PARTICIPANTS: Persons (N=188) who had sustained TBI within 4 years of enrollment into the project were interviewed at either 2 and 3 assessments. Each assessment was approximately 1 year apart. Several Axis I diagnoses were analyzed to detect cross-sectional differences (by age and time postinjury) and average individual changes o

Factors affecting participant recruitment and retention in borderline personality disorder research: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that stigma is a major barrier to participation in psychiatric research and that individuals who participate in psychiatric research may differ clinically and demographically from non-participants. However, few studies have explored research recruitment and retention challenges in the context of personality disorders. AIM: To provide an analysis of the factors affecting participant recruitment and retention in a study of borderline personality disorder among general psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: Adult inpatients in a tertiary psychiatric hospital we

[Assessment of pathological personality traits and gender characteristics by Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in a psychiatric and a normal sample].

INTRODUCTION: The DSM-5 describes two types of classification of personality disorders: a categorical and a dimensional classification. The alternative model of personality disorders in the DSM-5 determines new diagnostic criteria for personality disorders with a criterion B describing the presence of pathological personality facets. For the assessment of these domains and facets, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) was created. METHODS: A sample of patients receiving psychiatric care (n=239) and a normal sample (n=226) were involved in the study. The two samples did not differ signif

Restless legs syndrome as a possible predictor for psychiatric disorders in parents of children with ADHD.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder with estimated prevalence of 5% in children and 3.4% in adults. Psychiatric disorders are a frequent concomitant feature. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may mimic the symptoms of ADHD. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether the presence of RLS predicts occurrence of psychiatric disorders in parents of children with ADHD. Thirty-seven parents of 26 children with ADHD were examined for RLS and for lifetime prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders and personality disorders based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-I

Suicide risk in patients with somatization disorder.

The aim of the study was to assess suicide risk in psychiatric outpatients with and without somatization disorder. A total sample of 120 psychiatric outpatients was used in the study, 29 of whom met diagnostic criteria for somatization disorder. The results indicated that somatization disorder was significantly associated with suicide attempts even when the effects of both a comorbid major depressive disorder and a comorbid personality disorder were statistically controlled for. The results suggest that, although a patient meets the criteria for a principal diagnosis of major depressive disord

Housing Programs for Homeless Individuals With Mental Illness: Effects on Housing and Mental Health Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review analyzed the best available research in the United States on permanent supportive housing programs for homeless individuals with mental illness and the effect of these programs on housing status and mental health. It updates older and broader reviews that included weaker studies or those that did not analyze permanent housing as an input and housing and mental health as primary outcomes. METHODS: The literature search (1980-2013) yielded 14 studies (randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies). RESULTS: The studies found that a majority of pa

Clinical Impact of Psychopathy on Bipolar Disorder.

Background and Objectives. Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a significant burden due to affective symptoms and behavioral manifestations, but also cognitive and functional impairment. Comorbidity with other psychiatric conditions, including personality disorders, is frequent. The comorbidity with psychopathy deserves special consideration given that both disorders share some clinical characteristics, such as grandiosity, risky behavior or poor insight, among others, that can worsen the outcome of BD. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathy in a sample of c

Comorbidity of bulimia nervosa and personality disorder.

Thirty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa with at least three bingeing episodes a week were compared with 30 age- and sex-matched controls on DSM-III personality measures. The bulimic patients were more likely to display cluster B (histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 15.0) and cluster C (avoidant, dependent, compulsive, and passive-aggressive) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 4.3) than were the community controls. This study supports the finding that personality disorder is a possible risk factor for bulimia.

Treatment as punishment: forensic psychiatry in The Netherlands (1870-2005).

This article provides an overview of the development of forensic psychiatry in the Netherlands from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. The first part addresses the ways forensic psychiatry established itself in the period 1870-1925 and focuses on its interrelatedness with forensic practice, psychiatry's professionalization, the role of the government, the influence of the so-called New Direction in legal thinking and (Italian and French) anthropology of crime, and the debates among physicians as well as between psychiatrists and legal experts on the proper approach of menta

A psychiatric study of nonorganic chronic headache patients.

Nonorganic chronic headache is a common, challenging presentation in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of associated psychiatric psychopathology, personality disorders, or traits. In addition, the study attempted to investigate possible relationships of nonorganic chronic headache with alexithymia, locus of control, and pain perception. Psychiatric pathology, personality traits, and pain profiles were examined in 100 randomized patients with chronic headache lacking an obvious organic basis, and they were compared with 100 subjects, 50 with headache of a
