Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is an addition to the surgical armamentarium. CLINICAL CASE: A 77-year-old patient had uneventful cataract surgery in the right eye under peribulbar anaesthesia. The next day, a severe and progressive eyelid swelling was noted, caused by an unknown allergic reaction to povidone-iodine. The allergic signs dissapeared by the fifth day, but amaurosis and a cherry-red spot were detected. We describe the presence of unidentified foreign objects, including small freckles and fibrillary material, in the corneal stroma seen on slitlamp biomicroscopy in 2 patients who had uneventful clear corneal tunnel phacoemulsification. Clinically, these foreign objects did not appear to affect the final visual outcome. Further study is required to explain their source, role in the wound healing, and toxicity and the behavior of metallic particles in the magnetic field in relation to magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the postoperative astigmatism between sutured wounds and nonsutured wounds after cataract surgery with a 3.2-mm scleral tunnel incision.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred ten eyes of 110 patients were studied. Eyes with cataracts were randomly assigned to either the sutured or the unsutured procedure. Identical surgical methods were used in every case except for wound closure technique. Data on uncorrected visual acuity and induced astigmatism were analyzed for 6 months after the surgery.
RESULTS: Both groups displayed similar uncorrected visual acuity.

We undertook a prospective slit lamp examination of 56 eyes which had undergone routine phacoemulsification, in order to determine the incidence of metallic intraocular foreign bodies. Central corneal endothelial cell loss was compared following primary insertion of folded posterior chamber silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) in 29 eyes and Sinskey-style polymethylmethacrylate posterior chamber IOLs in 20 eyes. Cataracts were removed by phacoemulsification and sodium hyaluronate was used in all cases. The mean follow-up time was greater than seven months.
