Understanding Oregon's Public Health and Pharmacy Formulary Advisory Committee.

Pharmacists are engaging in a broader array of clinical activities, often necessitating prescriptive authority. As a result, in 2017, Oregon passed House Bill 2397, which directed the Oregon Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) to form the Public Health and Pharmacy Formulary Advisory Committee (PHPFAC). This multidisciplinary committee is charged with making recommendations to the OBOP on a formulary of drugs and devices that a pharmacist may prescribe and dispense pursuant to a diagnosis by a qualified health care provider. The formulary compendium, implemented through statewide protocols, currently pro

Strategies for Managing Pharmacy Experiential Education During COVID-19.

In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected almost every industry in the United States, including health care and higher education. Faculty and students at colleges and schools of pharmacy nationwide have needed to quickly adapt as the delivery of curricula has shifted to primarily online format. Additionally, experiential rotations have been significantly affected as practice settings such as hospitals and outpatient clinics have limited students' interactions with patients or stopped allowing students on-site altogether. Our commentary will explore strategies that h

Qualitative Investigation of Community Pharmacy Immunization Enhancement Program Implementation.

Background: Despite widely available nonseasonal immunization services in community pharmacies, actual pharmacist-administered vaccines are not yet optimal. A flexible choice multicomponent intervention, the "We Immunize" program, was implemented in Alabama and California community pharmacies, with the goal to enhance pneumococcal and zoster immunization delivery. Limited research has been done to qualitatively understand factors influencing immunization service expansion. Objective: Explore pharmacist perceptions of the We Immunize program in terms of its acceptability, impact, and real-world…

Mail-order pharmacy experience of veterans living with AIDS/HIV.

BACKGROUND: The VA system is the largest single provider of healthcare in the United States and to individuals infected with HIV specifically. High quality medication management is particularly important since HIV is a chronic infectious condition which requires taking multiple medications with strict requirements for adherence to medication regimens. Veterans Administration (VA) patients are required to obtain all chronic medications using the VA mail-order pharmacy system. OBJECTIVE: Drawing on Donabedian's Quality Improvement framework, this study sought to examine experiences that Veteran

OBJECTIVE: To assess pharmacy workers' knowledge and provision of abortion information and methods in Kenya. METHODS: In 2013 we interviewed 235 pharmacy workers in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu about the medical abortion services they provide. We also used mystery clients, who made 401 visits to pharmacies to collect first-hand information on abortion practices. RESULTS: The majority (87.5%) of pharmacy workers had heard of misoprostol but only 39.2% had heard of mifepristone. We found that pharmacy workers had limited knowledge of correct medical abortion regimens, side effects and complicat…

[Development of hospital pharmacy practice using therapeutic drug monitoring].

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is a developing field in hospital pharmacy that contributes to good clinical response. Optimal concentrations of immunosuppressants, anti-epileptic drugs, and glycopeptide antibiotics are narrow, and these drugs are widely monitored by fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) in clinical settings. Recently, a chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) has also become available. We compared these two assays in monitoring serum concentrations of cyclosporin A (CsA), carbamazepine (CBZ), phenobarbital, phenytoin, and valproic acid. FPIA estimates of CsA and CBZ con

Drug supply for psoriasis - results from a national pharmacy network.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, drugs are to a large extent provided by pharmacies. Thus, investigations in pharmacies permit drug usage studies both on patients receiving prescribable drugs and using self-medication. The current study evaluated the quality of medical care, disease burden and spectrum of treatments for patients with psoriasis in a nationwide network of pharmacies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in 61 pharmacies. Patients with psoriasis vulgaris who came to the pharmacy to obtain antipsoriatic drugs or basic ointments were consecutively recruite…

Pharmacy communication to adolescents and their physicians regarding access to emergency contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency contraception (EC) is an effective pregnancy prevention strategy. EC is available without a prescription to those aged 17 years or older. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of information provided to adolescents and their physicians when they telephone pharmacies to inquire about EC. METHODS: By using standardized scripts, female callers telephoned 943 pharmacies in 5 US cities posing as 17-year-old adolescents or as physicians calling on behalf of their 17-year-old patients. McNemar tests were used to compare outcomes between adolescent and physician …

Community pharmacy and cash reward: a winning combination for chlamydia screening?

OBJECTIVES: To date, the uptake of chlamydia screening in community pharmacies has been limited. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine if a cash reward, offered to both the provider and the consumer of chlamydia screening, increased the uptake of screening in community pharmacies. METHODS: During 4 weeks in 2011, chlamydia screening and education were offered in four city and two suburban pharmacies to people aged 16-30 years. Those who provided a urine sample for testing, contact details, and completed a brief questionnaire were rewarded with $A10. Positive participant…

Accuracy of automated community pharmacy-based blood pressure devices.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate accuracy and reliability of pharmacy-based fixed-location automated blood pressure devices (ABPDs) and to test the hypothesis that an ABPD is less accurate with more variable results than a home blood pressure device (HBPD). METHODS: Randomized study comparing 99 ABPDs with an Omron Digital HBPD in Indiana pharmacies. Each site was visited by one of five study investigators. A questionnaire was used to collect information about ABPDs. To test the ABPD against the HBPD, investigators measured their own blood pressure with each device three times in random order. RESULT…
