Orodispersible films in individualized pharmacotherapy: The development of a formulation for pharmacy preparations.

Orodispersible films (ODFs) are promising drug delivery systems for customized small scale pharmacy preparations. The aim of the present study was to develop a versatile casting solution suitable for the extemporaneous production of ODFs to which active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can be added. Different combinations of film forming agents and other excipients and different casting heights were tested for their suitability for production of ODFs. The best suitable casting solution contained hypromellose, carbomer, glycerol, disodium EDTA and trometamol. This casting solution was used to …

Organization of a health-system pharmacy team to respond to episodes of terrorism.

The role of a pharmacy emergency response team (PERT) trained to respond to episodes of terrorism involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents is described. Pharmacists must be prepared to support their health systems in responding to episodes of terrorism by detecting exposure to CBRN agents and mitigating, treating, and preventing casualties resulting from exposure to those agents. Maimonides Medical Center, whose pharmacists responded to the medical and pharmaceutical needs of victims of the World Trade Center attacks and anthrax exposures, has developed the PERT,…

Do chain pharmacies perform better than independent pharmacies? Evidence from a standardised patient study of the management of childhood diarrhoea and suspected tuberculosis in urban India.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacies and drug stores are frequently patients' first point of care in many low-income and middle-income countries, but their practice is often poor. Pharmacy retailing in India has traditionally been dominated by local, individually owned shops, but recent years have seen the growth of pharmacy chains. In theory, lower-powered profit incentives and self-regulation to preserve brand identity may lead to higher quality in chain stores. In practice, this has been little studied. METHODS: We randomly selected a stratified sample of chain and independent pharmacies in urban Beng…

Value-based care contracting for pharmacy drugs: opportunity for the United States.

The onset of improved data interoperability required as a result of the 21st Century Cures Act, 92% Health Information Exchange coverage, and lessons learned from European pharmaceutical risk-sharing models present innovative and timely opportunities for the U.S. to adopt pharmaceutical value-based contracting (VBC), which uses drug-level performance to allocate financial risk between payers and manufacturers based on clinical and economic metrics. Having been piloted in Italy, Spain, and the UK, this analysis explores different contracting options and paths for organizations like CMS and inte

Medication disposal knowledge, attitude and practice among undergraduates: Implications for pharmacy education.

BACKGROUND: Improper disposal of unused and expired medications contributes to environmental contamination and public health risks. Despite awareness efforts, disposal practices remain inconsistent and public education limited. Undergraduate students represent a key population for shaping long-term behaviors and understanding their knowledge, attitude and practice can inform educational strategies relevant to pharmacy education and public health. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a content-validated questionnaire via Microsoft Forms. A pilot study (n = 39) preceded the mai…

Identifying Foundational Drug Knowledge in Pharmacy Education Using a Structured Consensus Framework.

BACKGROUND: Foundational drug knowledge is a central expectation for pharmacy practice-readiness, yet programs lack consensus-based guidance on which medications to prioritize or how intensively to assess them. Programs often use volume-derived drug lists as a pragmatic starting point, but such lists may not fully reflect the breadth of medications encountered across diverse practice settings. The purpose of the study is to identify a consensus-based foundational drug list reflective of the breadth of pharmacy practice. METHODS: A multi-phase consensus study was conducted using the Lawshe met…

Shifting social and cultural narratives in pharmacy education: a summative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy education has experienced substantial changes in educational guidance, professional priorities, and the broader policy environment surrounding social and cultural topics. However, little is known about how these changes have been reflected in pharmacy education scholarship over time. The purpose of this study was to examine trends in the presence, terminology, and contexts in which social and cultural topics were represented in U.S. pharmacy education, as reflected in titles presented at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy annual meetings. METHODS: A summativ…
