[Multilocular hepatic masses due to Enterobius vermicularis].

Infestation with Enterobius vermicularis involving extraintestinal manifestation is rare. In a 50-year-old man with lower abdominal pain, computed tomography led to a suspected diagnosis of sigmoid carcinoma with liver metastasis. After ruling out colon cancer by endoscopy, laparoscopic resection of one suspected tumor nodule in the liver was performed. Histopathological examination revealed parasitic granulomas containing pinworms. Hematogenous migration was postulated in the setting of phlebitis with thrombosis of the inferior mesenteric vein.

[Sural false aneurysm disclosing the presence of Behçet's disease].

The authors report the case of a 35 year old patient that presented acutely with a false aneurysm of the tibioperoneal trunk diagnosed at Doppler US and CT angiography. Behçet's disease was considered because of a prior history of recurrent phlebitis, the presence of bipolar aphthae and a biological inflammatory syndrome. This case is of interest for two reasons: first, the atypical location of the false aneurysm, and second, the value of less invasive imaging techniques, namely Doppler US and CT angiography.

[Mondor's disease. Report of 22 cases].

Mondor's disease is a rare pathology which is characterized from a superficial thrombophlebitis more frequently of a vein on the anterolateral thoraco-abdominal wall. The world literature reported about 500 cases which have been compared to 22 cases which represent our personal case-report. The most frequent etiological causes are represented by post-traumatic and infective events. The most important symptom is pain. The prognosis of the singol phlebitis focus is always favourable.

[Diagnosis of liver abscess].

The diagnosis of hepatic abscesses in outpatients is accurate in hardly half of the cases. The rest of them are commonly taken for: acute cholecystitis, cholecystopancreatitis, pancreatitis, peritonitis, phlebitis of the splenic veins, intestinal obstruction, chronic enterocolitis, pneumonia, pleurisy. Misdiagnosis is usually attributed to the absence of pathognomonic symptoms and atypical course of a hepatic abscess. With right chest and hypochondrium pains of unknown origin and elevation of body temperature, diagnostic efforts should be directed to recognition of a hepatic abscess.

Rare complications in a case of generalized meningococcal disease: immunologic reaction versus bacterial metastasis.

A 14-year-old girl was suffering from meningococcal sepsis with initial endophthalmitis. During a secondary and prolonged fever attack including aseptic meningitis, temporary complications such as pericarditis, arthralgic pains, headache and localized phlebitis were observed. There were three relapses of pericarditis within nine months. Their course was benign. The discussion deals with the pathogenesis of these complications as metastatic and immunologic reactions. The possibility of these complications should be considered during diagnostic investigation and therapeutic treatment.

IgG4-related disease manifesting as symptoms of appendicitis: Case report and literature review.

Immunoglobulin G subclass 4 (IgG4)-related disease is a recently described fibroinflammatory condition. Reports of appendix involvement are extremely limited. A young man with abdominal pain and symptoms of acute appendicitis accompanied by the finding of an appendix-dependent tumor during surgery is presented. Histopathological study revealed lymphoplasmocytic infiltrate, storiform fibrosis and obliterative phlebitis. The number of IgG4-positive plasma cells was greater than 50 per high power field. Postsurgical steroid treatment and radiological findings are also described.

Impact of an interventional bundle on complications associated with peripheral venous catheters in elderly patients.

PURPOSE: Elderly patients admitted to geriatrics departments often require peripheral venous catheters (PVC), which should be inserted and m … rences in demographic characteristics were observed between the study periods. The colonization and phlebitis rates per 1000 admissions in both periods were, respectively, 36.7 vs. 24.3 (p = 0.198) and 81.5 vs. 65.1 (p = 0.457). The main reason for catheter withdrawal was obstruction/malfunctioning (33.3%). Obstruction rate was higher for those inserted in …

Retinal Periphlebitis May Be a Marker for Subphenotype in Multiple Sclerosis.

Retinal periphlebitis (RPP) is a long-known entity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and has not been revisited in the context of recent developments in MS pathogenesis and heterogeneity. We present six cases of RPP in three female and three male MS patients. They all have relapsing-remitting MS and did not have or had minor ocular symptoms. It is important to perform a thorough retinal examination in patients with MS, as peripheral and sectorial lesions could be unseen. A better knowledge on the concomitant involvement of retinal veins contributes to the understanding of immunopatholog…

Periphlebitis of the Superior Ophthalmic Vein.

Isolated orbital periphlebitis in the context of nonspecific orbital inflammation is rare. This case series describes 3 patients with periphlebitis of the superior ophthalmic vein, 2 of which were confirmed with pathology. All 3 cases had a history of Graves hyperthyroidism. Superior ophthalmic vein periphlebitis is a rare form of orbital inflammation presenting with proptosis and motility restriction yet few inflammatory signs. It may be associated with autoimmune hyperthyroidism and represent a rare feature of thyroid eye disease, or perhaps could be an overlap syndrome between thyroid eye d…

[Thrombophlebitis migrans].

Semantically, the term is correct, because inflammatory involvement of the vein wall predominates over thrombosis, and the indication for anti-inflammatory drugs is absolute while that for anticoagulants is secondary. The nosological characteristics are its relapsing, migratory and primary nature. But, in fact, this is a "signal-symptom", whether involving normal or varicose veins, with nodular or stranded appearance, with patches of hypodermal inflammation or erysipeloid. The major problem is that of aetiology: infections, systemic disease, blood diseases, deep-seated neoplasia... not to ment

[Thoraco-brachial outlet venous syndromes].

The name "phlebitis of effort" is often misleading ; effort is often only the precipitating or revealing factor of a venous thrombosis related, in fact, to another cause. In particular, the author draws attention to the local factor of subclavian stenosis : one case is reported in demonstration. In order to detect these subclavian stenoses, a clinical examination is sometimes of little value and phlebography is essential for diagnosis. Identification of this kind of lesion is followed by consideration of the indications for surgery, either to prevent the risk of secondary thrombosis or to decr…

Post partum infections: A review for the non-OBGYN.

The epidemiology of infections in the puerperium (post partum period) is not well understood and remains underestimated because surveillance systems are often limited to the acute care setting. The most common source of persistent fever after delivery is genital tract infection for which diagnosis remains mostly clinical and antibiotic treatment empiric. This review will emphasize surgical site infections (SSIs) and endometritis. Septic thrombo-phlebitis, mastitis, urinary tract infections and rare infections will be covered in less detail. Puerperal sepsis will not be reviewed.

The phlebopathies of the fasciitis panniculitis syndrome.

The fasciitis-panniculitis syndrome is histologically characterized by fibrous thickening and inflammation of the subcutaneous septa, fascia and perimysium. These morphological features were the common denominator in 13 patients with Shulman's eosinophilic fasciitis, scleroderma profunda, venous lipodermatosclerosis, induration following recurrent erysipelas and erysipeloid erythema nodosum. Small to medium-sized vessel phlebitis was found in the subcutaneous and perimysial tissues of 11 of the patients and subcutaneous phlebosclerosis was encountered in all cases. These data contrast with the…

For diagnoses under the heading "phlebitis and thrombophlebitis", the number of referrals increased from 3639 in 2015 to 5200 in 2021. The proportion of venous ulcers remained fairly constant, ranging from 3.7% in 2019 to 5% in 2020. Asymptomatic varicose veins (without visible or palpable s …
