Energy dissipation pathways in molecular organic crystals under low-velocity impact.

With the adoption of mechanical processing to synthetic organic chemistry, mechanochemistry is undergoing a new phase of significant growth. … hermal constraints associated with localised melting, and the energy transfer from external lattice phonons to intramolecular vibrational modes. The analysis shows that particle rearrangement, plastic shear sliding, phase change, and low-frequency lattice phonon thermalization collectively dissipate the mechanical energy, preventing intramolecular bonds t …

Interplay between Structural, Electronic, and Topological Properties in Low-Dimensional Tellurium.

We present a comprehensive first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and topological properties of tellurium across its dimensional hierarchy, including bulk trigonal Te-I, two-dimensional tellurene polymorphs, and one-dimensional helical nanowires. Using density functional theory with full inclusion of spin-orbit coupling, we confirm that bulk Te-I is a narrow-gap semiconductor hosting Weyl nodes arising from broken inversion symmetry and degenerate phonon modes suggestive of chiral phonon behavior. In contrast, two-dimensional α- and β-tellurene are found to

Superconductivity at 31 K in a Stage-1 Sodium-Intercalated Graphite.

Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) serve as a highly tunable platform for exploring phonon-mediated superconductivity in lightweight materials. While theoretical models have long predicted that densely packed, first-stage (stage-1) sodium-intercalated graphite (Na-GIC) could host elevated critical temperatures (Tc), its experimental synthesis has remained a formidable challenge. Here, we report the realization of stage-1 Na-GIC that exhibits bulk superconductivity and achieves a maximum onset Tc of ∼31 K, setting a record for all known GIC systems. By employing a room-temperature mechanic

3D-Printed Architected Anisotropic Channels for Ultrafast Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation via Localized Thermal Management and Water Layer Structuring.

Efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation requires coordinated photon absorption, heat confinement, and directional water delivery, yet current directional evaporators rarely achieve materials-level anisotropy to regulate photon-phonon-water coupling. Here, we report a 3D-printed anisotropic channel architecture (a-BTCG) that co-engineers directional geometry with preferential alignment of Ti3O5 nanoparticles, boron nitride (BN) nanosheets, and chitosan to form an integrated transport framework. The a-BTCG delivers a high evaporation rate of 5.43 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun and maintains stabl

Anharmonicity-driven low lattice thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric response in monolayer CeX2 (X = O, S, Se, Te).

Rare-earth materials drive technological innovations from clean energy to quantum devices, yet their two-dimensional (2D) derivatives remain largely unexplored. Here, we decode the thermal and electronic transport mechanisms in 2D rare-earth dichalcogenides CeX2 (X = O, S, Se, Te) through first-principles calculations, temperature-dependent effective potentials theory, anharmonic lattice dynamics, and Boltzmann transport theory. Both ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and finite-temperature phonon spectra demonstrate that CeX2 compounds are structurally stable. In this class of materials

Atomic-scale double-slit interferometry with a focused electron probe.

Since Young's original work with light1, double-slit interference experiments have been paradigmatic demonstrations of wave-particle duality2-6. They now underpin modern electron, neutron, atom and molecule interferometers, whose fringe visibility and phase encode quantitative information about both the wave and the diffracting object. Extending this to atomic length scales would offer direct, local access to microscopic structure and dynamics, but has remained unexplored. Here we show that double-slit interferometry can be realized at atomic scales inside a crystal. Using scanning transmissio

Exploring multifunctional behavior in X2CoGa (X = Cu, Ag, Zn, Nb) Heusler alloys via first-principles calculations.

In the present work, first-principles density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate the structural, spin-polarized electronic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of full-Heusler alloys X2CoGa (X = Cu, Ag, Zn, Nb). Structural optimization and total energy analysis reveal that Ag2CoGa stabilizes in the L21 state, whereas Cu2CoGa, Zn2CoGa, and Nb2CoGa preferentially adopt the XA state. Phonon dispersion calculations indicate that Ag2CoGa and Zn2CoGa are dynamically unstable due to the presence of imaginary phonon modes, while Cu2CoGa and Nb2CoGa are dynamically stable.

Resolving Intrinsic Versus Anomalous Raman Modes in 2D Ferromagnet Fe3-xGeTe2 with Application to Regulating the Surface Oxide.

Electron correlations in Fe3-xGeTe2 give rise to numerous emergent phenomena, notably two-dimensional (2D) itinerant ferromagnetism with application in spintronics. Lattice dynamics play an integral role in Fe3-xGeTe2's novel properties, yet a complete understanding of them has been confounded by conflicting reports of the frequencies of its Raman modes. Here, we present time-dependent Raman scattering measurements of Fe3-xGeTe2 that resolve its intrinsic versus anomalous modes. The anomalous modes emerge from Te precipitates that form when Fe and Ge atoms at the surface oxidize and release Te

Ultralow thermal conductivity of W-Janus bilayers (WXY: X, Y = S, Se, and Te) for thermoelectric devices.

Lattice thermal conductivity (κ) in tungsten dichalcogenide Janus (WXY, where X, Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayers and heterostructures (HSs) have been investigated using ab initio DFT simulations. Tungsten-based Janus monolayers show semiconducting behavior with the bandgap in the semiconducting range for WSSe (1.70 eV), WSTe (1.26 eV), and WSeTe (1.34 eV). When Janus monolayers are stacked to form HSs with weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, the bandgap reduces to 0.19 eV, 0.40 eV, and 0.24 eV, respectively, for WSeTe/WSTe, WSSe/WSTe, and WSSe/WSeTe HSs. Thermal vibrational characteristics of

Surface inducing high-temperature superconductivity in layered metal carborides Li2BC3 and LiBC by metallizing σ electrons.

Metallizing σ electrons provides a promising route to design high-temperature superconducting materials, such as MgB2 and high-pressure hydrides. Here, we focus on two MgB2-like layered carborides Li2BC3 and LiBC; their bulk does not have superconductivity because the B-C σ states are far away from the Fermi level (EF), however, based on first-principles calculations, we found that when their bulk systems are cleaved into surfaces with B-C termination, high Tc of ∼80 K could be observed in the exposed B-C layer on the surfaces. Detailed analysis reveals that surface symmetry reduction, due to

First-principles prediction of structural stability and thermoelectric properties of SrGaSnH.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials based on earth-abundant and non-toxic elements are very useful in cost-effective and eco-friendly waste heat management systems. The constituents of SrGaSnH are earth-abundant and non-toxic, thus we have chosen SrGaSnH to study its structural stability and thermoelectric properties by using density functional theory (DFT), density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Our elastic and phonons calculations show that the compound has good structural stability. The electronic structure calculation discloses that it is an…

Atomic-level engineering of multifunctional BixC16 nanocages for hydrogen storage, thermoelectric energy conversion, spintronics, and nanoelectronic applications.

CONTEXT: The development of stable carbon-based nanomaterials with tunable electronic, magnetic, thermoelectric, and hydrogen storage properties is important for emerging energy conversion and nanoelectronic technologies. Here, Bi-doped C16 nanocages, BixC16 (x = 1-4), corresponding to Bi concentrations of 5.8, 11.1, 15.7, and 20.0 wt%, were systematically investigated. Negative formation energies, phonon spectra without imaginary modes, and 300 K ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm the energetic, dynamical, and thermal stability of the considered nanocages. Increasing Bi incorpor

Lasing in single cadmium sulfide nanowire optical cavities.

The mechanism of lasing in single cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire cavities was elucidated by temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Temperature-dependent PL studies reveal rich spectral features and show that an exciton-exciton interaction is critical to lasing up to 75 K, while an exciton-phonon process dominates at higher temperatures. These measurements together with temperature and intensity dependent lifetime and threshold studies show that lasing is due to formation of excitons and, moreover, have implications for the design of efficient, low threshol

The ferroelastic phase transition in hydrogen cyanide studied by density functional theory.

We report calculations of the crystal structures and lattice dynamics of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases of the molecular crystal hydrogen cyanide, HCN, using density functional theory methods. By treating negative pressure as a proxy for raising temperature we show that the ferroelastic phase transition involves softening of a transverse acoustic mode, and confirm that the phase transition is discontinuous. Analysis of the complete phonon spectrum shows that the acoustic modes are responsible both for the very large thermal expansion seen in HCN and also for the thermodynamic driving f

Effect of C and N Addition on Thermoelectric Properties of TiNiSn Half-Heusler Compounds.

We investigated the thermoelectric properties of the ternary half-Heusler compound, TiNiSn, when introducing C and N. The addition of C or N to TiNiSn leads to an enhanced power factor and a decreasing lattice thermal conductivity by point defect phonon scattering. The thermoelectric performances of TiNiSn alloys are significantly improved by adding 1 at. % TiN, TiC, and figure of merit (ZT) values of 0.43 and 0.34, respectively, can be obtained at 723 K. This increase in thermoelectric performance is very helpful in the commercialization of thermoelectric power generation in the mid-temperatu

Dynamics of the self-energy of the Gd(0001) surface state probed by femtosecond photoemission spectroscopy.

Transient changes of the complex self-energy of the 5d(z2) surface state on Gd(0001) after intense optical excitation are investigated by femtosecond time-resolved photoemission. We observe an ultrafast (<100 fs) broadening of the linewidth due to e-e scattering followed by a decrease of the binding energy due to thermal expansion of the lattice. In addition, we resolve a periodic breathing of the band structure which originates from a coherent phonon. An amplitude of 1 pm is derived from the binding energy shift upon lattice displacement calculated by density functional theory.

First-Principles Study of the Superconductivity of Ti3VH12 and TiV3H12 Under 200 GPa.

Hydrogen-rich compounds under high pressure are promising for high-temperature superconductivity, but many high-Tc hydrides rely on rare-earth or alkaline-earth elements and remain difficult to tune chemically. Transition-metal hydrides offer an alternative platform because partially filled d states can modify the electronic density of states, metal-hydrogen hybridization, and electron-phonon coupling. Here, VH3 is used as a parent high-pressure transition-metal hydride framework, and Ti substitution is introduced as a chemically compatible way to tune the d-derived states near the Fermi level

Self-Trapped Excitons and Room-Temperature Ferroelectricity in Quasi-One-Dimensional Semiconductor BiSeBr for Polarization-Sensitive Optoelectronics.

Bismuth-based chalcohalides are emerging as a promising family of materials for optoelectronics due to their intrinsically anisotropic optical and electronic properties. However, the lack of high-quality crystals has hindered access to their intrinsic physical properties. Here, we present the synthesis and comprehensive optoelectronic characterization of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) BiSeBr crystals. This work establishes a previously unreported synergy, the coexistence of ferroelectricity and self-trapped excitons (STEs) in a single quasi-1D semiconductor, and its exploitatio

Mixed-valence molecules as platforms for ultrafast cooling via sudden electric-field switching.

In this article, we propose the concept of ultrafast cooling under sudden electric field quenching based on the use of binuclear mixed valence (MV) molecules. The formalism earlier developed in the study of molecular quantum cellular automata is used by considering the scenario in which one polarized MV dimer ("driver-cell") creates a dipole electric field acting on the adjacent dimer ("working cell"). To describe such dimers, the conventional vibronic theory of MV compounds adapted to the present case is applied. The considered process includes two distinct stages: (1) sudden decrease in the

Defect-Induced Single-Photon Emission in ZnPS3.

Research on single photon sources in layered materials has been limited so far to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as hosting platforms. These quantum emitters exhibit advantages due to the distinct semiconducting and insulating characteristics of the two classes of materials, which enable their integration with van der Waals heterostructures and devices. Here, we report single photon emission in ZnPS3, which belongs to the MPX3 family characterized by stronger electronic correlations than those observed intrinsically in TMDs or hBN. We provide a compre
