Electroencephalographic features of benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate electroencephalographic (EEG) features of benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy (BAFME). METHODS: We reviewed … spike/polyspike and wave complexes (GSW) for each BAFME patient and measured the duration of them. Photic stimulation and hyperventilation were performed in all. RESULTS: Nineteen (eight men, 11 women) patients with BAFME were included in this study. The mean frequency of GSW was 4.3±1.0Hz (mean±SD, n=14) in BAFME and 3.2±0.8Hz (n=10) in EGTCS. There was a statist …

Efficacy of sodium valproate in the treatment of photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) and the probable reasons for the persistence of occipital spikes.

Intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) in patients with photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) leads to EEG abnormalities, which include generalized discharges with spike and wave activity. This paper investigates 33 PSE patients, 14 (42%) males and 19 (58%) females. The age range was between 8 and 45 years. After the treatment of the patients with sodium valproate (VPA), the EEG examinations showed that the generalized discharges disappeared, while the occipital spikes persisted. The mechanism of action of VPA was re-evaluated in order to ascertain whether or not the persistent occipital was due to a f…

Countermovement jump analysis: Effects of acoustic and visual stimuli on jump performance in volleyball players evaluated by inertial measurement unit.

The ability to perform maximal vertical jumps (VJs) significantly affects athletic performance in several sports, such as volleyball, with a paucity of studies investigating the effects of different sensory stimuli on VJ performance. To the best of our knowledge, no study quantitatively assessed the variations of spatial-temporal and kinetic parameters during Countermovement Jump-Free Arms (CMJ-FA) execution in different acoustic and visual conditions. The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of visual and acoustic stimuli, in conditions considered incentive and disincentive, on

Spatially precise activation of the mouse cochlea with a multi-channel hybrid cochlear implant.

Objective.Cochlear implants are among the few clinical interventions for people with severe or profound hearing loss. However, current spread during monopolar electrical stimulation results in poor spectral resolution, prompting the exploration of optical stimulation as an alternative approach. Enabled by introducing light-sensitive ion channels into auditory neurons (optogenetics), optical stimulation has been shown to activate a more discrete neural area with minimal overlap between each frequency channel during simultaneous stimulation. However, the utility of optogenetic approaches is unce

Multisensory representations of space and time in sensory cortices.

Clear evidence demonstrated a supramodal organization of sensory cortices with multisensory processing occurring even at early stages of information encoding. Within this context, early recruitment of sensory areas is necessary for the development of fine domain-specific (i.e., spatial or temporal) skills regardless of the sensory modality involved, with auditory areas playing a crucial role in temporal processing and visual areas in spatial processing. Given the domain-specificity and the multisensory nature of sensory areas, in this study, we hypothesized that preferential domains of represe

Audio-visual stimulation for visual compensatory functions in stroke survivors with visual field defect: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hemianopia is a complete or partial blindness in the visual fields of both eyes, commonly caused by cerebral infarction. It has been hypothesized that systematic audio-visual (AV) stimulation of the blind hemifield can improve accuracy and search times, probably due to the stimulation of bimodal representations in the superior colliculus (SC), an important multisensory structure involved in both the initiation and execution of saccades. METHODS: A narrative synthesis of the findings is presented to highlight how AV rehabilitation impacts on patients with hemianopia including visua

Motor Circuit and Superior Temporal Sulcus Activities Linked to Individual Differences in Multisensory Speech Perception.

Integrating multimodal information into a unified perception is a fundamental human capacity. McGurk effect is a remarkable multisensory illusion that demonstrates a percept different from incongruent auditory and visual syllables. However, not all listeners perceive the McGurk illusion to the same degree. The neural basis for individual differences in modulation of multisensory integration and syllabic perception remains largely unclear. To probe the possible involvement of specific neural circuits in individual differences in multisensory speech perception, we first implemented a behavioral

Impaired short-term visual paired associative plasticity in patients with migraine between attacks.

A common experimental neurophysiological method to study synaptic plasticity is pairing activity of somatosensory afferents and motor cortical circuits, so-called paired associative stimulation (PAS). Dysfunctional inhibitory and excitatory PAS mechanisms within the sensorimotor system were described in patients with migraine without aura (MO) between attacks. We have recently observed that the same bidirectional PAS rules also apply to the visual system. Here, we have tested whether dysfunctioning associative plasticity might characterize the visual system of patients with MO. In 14 patients

Temporo-parietal contribution to the mental representations of self/other face.

Face recognition requires comparing the current visual input with stored mental representations of faces. Based on its role in visual recognition of faces and mental representation of the body, we hypothesized that the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) could be implicated also in processing mental representation of faces. To test this hypothesis, we asked 30 neurotypical participants to perform mental rotation (laterality judgment of rotated pictures) of self- and other-face images, before and after the inhibition of rTPJ through repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. After inhibit

Shared Physiological Correlates of Multisensory and Expectation-Based Facilitation.

Perceptual performance in a visual task can be enhanced by simultaneous multisensory information, but can also be enhanced by a symbolic or amodal cue inducing a specific expectation. That similar benefits can arise from multisensory information and within-modality expectation raises the question of whether the underlying neurophysiological processes are the same or distinct. We investigated this by comparing the influence of the following three types of auxiliary probabilistic cues on visual motion discrimination in humans: (1) acoustic motion, (2) a premotion visual symbolic cue, and (3) a p

Intersensory redundancy promotes infant detection of prosody in infant-directed speech.

Prosody, or the intonation contours of speech, conveys emotion and intention to the listener and provides infants with an early basis for detecting meaning in speech. Infant-directed speech (IDS) is characterized by exaggerated prosody, slower tempo, and elongated pauses, all amodal properties detectable across the face and voice. Although speech is an audiovisual event, it has been studied primarily as a unimodal auditory stream without the synchronized dynamic face of the speaker. According to the intersensory redundancy hypothesis, redundancy across the senses facilitates perceptual learnin

Nonpharmacological, nonsurgical treatments for freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review.

Freezing of gait is a disabling phenomenon that appears in a substantial number of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients as the disease evolves. It is considered to be one of the most relevant contributing factors to worsening of quality of life. Current pharmacological or surgical treatment options have limited efficacy. Thus, alternative nonpharmacological/nonsurgical approaches have emerged in recent years in an attempt to improve quality of life in PD. This systematic review summarizes studies of such therapies over the past 5 years. Thirty-five studies were evaluated by use of a qualitative e

Spontaneous generalization of abstract multimodal patterns in young domestic chicks.

From the early stages of life, learning the regularities associated with specific objects is crucial for making sense of experiences. Through filial imprinting, young precocial birds quickly learn the features of their social partners by mere exposure. It is not clear though to what extent chicks can extract abstract patterns of the visual and acoustic stimuli present in the imprinting object, and how they combine them. To investigate this issue, we exposed chicks (Gallus gallus) to three days of visual and acoustic imprinting, using either patterns with two identical items or patterns with tw

Effect of photic conditioning on blink reflex recovery function in blepharospasm.

Patients with blepharospasm may have selective sensitivity to photic stimuli, for their symptoms are often aggravated after exposure to brightness. To investigate the pathophysiology underlying this phenomenon, we compared the effects of electric and photic conditioning on electrically-evoked blink reflex in 21 patients with blepharospasm and 11 age-matched control subjects. With electric conditioning, R1 was facilitated at inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) of up to 100 ms in both groups. R2 was inhibited at all ISIs longer than 20 ms in the normals, but to a much lesser extent in the patients,

Sodium pentobarbital: sensory and associative effects in classical conditioning of the rabbit nictitating membrane response.

Four experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sodium pentobarbital (0, 3, 9, and 15 mg/kg) on the acquisition of the rabbit's classically conditioned nictitating membrane response (NMR) and to determine the locus of the drug's effects on sensory, motor, associative, and nonassociative processes. In experiment 1, classical conditioning of the NMR was accomplished by pairing tone and light conditioned stimuli (CSs) with paraorbital shock as the unconditioned stimulus (US). The experiment revealed that pentobarbital retarded the acquisition of conditioned responses (CRs) to both ton
