Development of molecular detection methods of Bovicola ovis from sheep fleece.

The sheep body louse (Bovicola ovis) commonly referred to as sheep lice are small chewing ectoparasites of sheep. Infection results in significant economic costs to the Australian sheep industry due to reduced wool quality caused by chronic itching from sheep rubbing and biting fleece. Treatment relies on use of insecticides; however, resistance has developed against pyrethroid and other insect growth regulator lousicides. There is urgent need to develop cost-effective lice management to reduce the use of insecticides, with the application of insecticidal treatments only applied when an infest

Monthly abundance of rodent and their ectoparasites in newly settled areas, east of lakes, Ismailia Governorate, Egypt.

Rodents and their ectoparasites were studied inside and outside houses in the newly settled areas, east of lakes, Ismailia Governorate, Egypt. Forty traps per month in each of the two sides were used for collecting rodent during 2009. From 221 rodent were collected from inside houses; Mus musculus N=115 (52.04%), Rattus rattus. frugivorous N=54 (24.43%), R. r. alexandrinus N=40 (18.10%) and R. norvegicus N=12 (5.43%). From 177 rodent were collected from outside houses; M musculus N=4 (2.3%), R. r. frugivorous N=29 (16.43%), R. r. alexandrinus N=37 (20.9%), R. norvegicus N=36 (20.3%), Gerbillus

[Chewing-lice (Phtihiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) occurring on birds in the Konya zoo].

In this study, 25 birds belonging to 15 different species at the zoo in Konya were inspected for the presence of chewing-lice. Three Long-legged Buzzards (Buteo rufinus), one Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) and one Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) were found to be infested by chewing-lice. Two hundred and eleven chewing-lice specimens were collected from the birds and seven species were identified. They were mounted on slides separately in Faure forte medium or Canada balsam after clearing in 10% KOH. Morphologic characteristics of the chewing-lice were examined and measured under the light

Temporal relationship between infestation with lice (Bovicola ovis Schrank) and the development of pruritic behaviour and fleece derangement in sheep.

Pruritic behaviour and deranged fleece are often used as indicators of sheep louse infestation but the exact relationship between infestation and the observation of signs of pruritus was unclear. Two studies were conducted to examine this association. In the first, 24 castrate Merino sheep were randomly assigned to six pens in groups of four and the sheep in three pens infested with 10 lice each on the right mid-side. Louse numbers were counted, fleece derangement scored and pruritic behaviour assessed periodically on each sheep until 38 weeks after infestation. In the second study a single mo

The first recording of Piagetiella titan (Menoponidae: Mallophaga) on a white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus, Linneaus) in Turkey.

During the examination of a wounded white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) brought to the clinic of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Selcuk University, lice infestation of the oral cavity was observed and 26 lice were collected. The lice were identified as Piagetiella titan during microscopical examination. No other report of this particular subject in Turkey was found. Therefore, this original observation is reported as the first case of P. titan infestation of a white pelican found in Turkey. This report is being included in the data of the parasitic fauna of Turkey.

Genetic variation in infestation with a directly transmitted ectoparasite.

Acute leukaemia is the commonest form of malignancy in childhood. The coincidental development of leukaemia in children or adults with haemophilia is extremely rare, although cases of leukaemia and other malignancies have been reported previously in HIV-positive subjects. Of a total of 440 people with haemophilia registered with our society, two were diagnosed with acute leukaemia last year. The development of leukaemia in a subject with haemophilia has previously been reported from our country in 1985, but the negative HIV status of these recent cases is very interesting. The first case invol

The "nuisance" sexually transmitted diseases: molluscum contagiosum, scabies, and crab lice.

Although molluscum contagiosum, scabies, and infestation by crab lice do not carry the requirements of partner notification or other long-term consequences, they are among the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease. Molluscum contagiosum is a benign viral infection of the skin epidermal layer, most often transmitted by intimate skin-to-skin contact. The lesions often resolve spontaneously over time, but patient discomfort or social reasons may require destructive removal of the lesions. Scabies is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The victims continually itch, especially at ni

Ectoparasitic fauna of poultry in Nsukka, Nigeria.

An investigation which lasted for a period of one calendar year was mounted to determine common ectoparasitic fauna of poultry in Nsukka, Nigeria. This survey covered twenty commercial poultry farms located in different areas of Nsukka. Birds were picked and thoroughly examined visually for the presence of ectoparasites after horizontal displacement of the feathers against their anatomical direction of alignment. Identification was mainly by morphological characteristics, host preference and anatomical location. The result of the survey indicates that 15 (75%) out of a total of 20 farms sample

[Massive infestation of Goniocotes megalocephalus on an injured hazel-cock].

A strong infestation of Goniocotes megalocephalus [Mallophaga] on the adult male of Hazelgrouse (Tetrastes bonasia rupestris C. L.Brehm, 1831), which died gradually in cause of a trauma, is described. The result of examination and circumstances of it are dicussed. The poor condition of the bird caused by the trauma and its reduced activity during the winter season were probably the most important factors, on account of these the population of the parasites was increased.
