Consistency of sincere and feigned grip exertions with repeated testing.

Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that feigned exertions would show greater variability in both force and electromyograms than would sincere exertions over repeated testing sessions. Eleven normal subjects made sincere and feigned exertions while performing the five-handle position Jamar grip test. The subjects were tested 6 times in a 3- to 5-week period. Contrary to the hypothesis, feigned exertions did not show greater variability than sincere exertions. Both sincere and feigned exertions were highly consistent over the six sessions. However, the sincere and feigned exertions did diffe

Emergency treatment of exertional heatstroke and comparison of whole body cooling techniques.

This manuscript compares the whole body cooling techniques in the emergency treatment of heatstroke. Historically, the use of cold water immersion with skin massage has been quite successful in rapidly lowering body temperature and in avoiding severe complications or death. Recent studies have suggested alternative therapies, including the use of a warm air spray, the use of helicopter downdraft, and pharmacological agents. While evidence exists to support these methods, they have not been shown to reduce fatalities as effectively as ice water immersion. Although several cooling methods may ha

Ventilatory control during exercise with peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation: hypoxia vs. domperidone.

Hypoxia potentiates the ventilatory response to exercise, eliciting a greater decrease in arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) from rest to exercise than in normoxia. The mechanism of this hypoxia-exercise interaction requires intact carotid chemoreceptors. To determine whether carotid chemoreceptor stimulation alone is sufficient to elicit the mechanism without whole body hypoxia, ventilatory responses to treadmill exercise were compared in goats during hyperoxic control conditions, moderate hypoxia (PaO2 = 38-44 Torr), and peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation with the peripheral dopamine D2-receptor antago

The control of speed in elite female speed skaters.

From ten participants in the World Championships Speed Skating for Ladies 1983 a number of selected mechanical parameters were measured and correlated with speed and external power. The parameters were derived by means of video and film analysis of strokes at the four distances: 500 m, 1500 m, 3000 m and 5000 m. The results show that these speed skaters control the different speeds at different distances mainly by changing their stroke frequency and not by changing the amount of work per stroke. However, at the same distance the relatively small interindividual differences in performance level

Physiological correlates of heat intolerance.

Although wide interindividual variation exists with respect to heat tolerance, research has pointed out common physical and physiological characteristics which are associated with a decreased ability to adapt to an imposed (internal or external) heat load. While it is difficult to predict individual responses, it is often desirable, e.g. in an industrial environment, to screen out those suspected heat-intolerant persons. Included among the correlates of heat intolerance are a history of heat illness, previous difficulty in acclimating or reacclimating to the heat, low aerobic fitness level, ag

Determinants of increased energy cost of submaximal exercise in obese subjects.

The energy cost of submaximal cycling exercises is studied in 23 obese (OS) and 13 lean control (LS) subjects at 1) a constant pedaling frequency (60 rpm) and at various work loads [external work loads (Wmec) up to 100 W] for one group of OS and LS, and at 2) constant Wmec (brake free and 60 or 70 W) and various frequencies (38-70 rpm) for a second group of OS and LS. The total energy expenditure (WO2) is calculated from O2 consumption (VO2) measured in both conditions and is compared with anthropometric data. The results show that at rest or at the same Wmec, WO2 is always greater in OS than

A portable lightweight Douglas bag instrument for use during various types of exercise.

A construction outline of lightweight portable equipment for VO2 measurements by the Douglas bag method is given. The equipment consists of three separate units: an inspiration-expiration valve, a switch directing the expiratory flow, and a disconnectable bag with stopcock. The ease of operation assures good reproducibility of the results. Experiences during maximal speed skating are described. Use of the equipment demands only simple operations by the subject, which do not interfere with the exercise.

Lactate accumulation relative to the anaerobic and respiratory compensation thresholds.

Anaerobic thresholds of five male subjects were determined invasively (ATi), from a marked increase in plasma lactate above resting levels (delta La), and noninvasively (ATn), from a nonlinear increase in minute ventilation (VE) during incremental work (IW) leg cycling tests; work rate was increased 30 W every 2 min. Each subject also performed four constant-load work (CLW) tasks just above and just below their ATn and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT), i.e., the point expressed as O2 consumption (VO2) or work rate, at which VE increases disproportionally to CO2 output during IW. In fou

[Effort-induced malignant hyperthermia. Electromyographic anomalies with a myogenic component. 10 cases].

Exertion malignant hyperthermia, usually regarded as a form of heat stroke, is mainly observed in young apparently healthy men enlisted in the army and subjected to intensive physical exertion in a warm and damp environment. It is frequently lethal. Ten cases with favourable outcome are reported. In 8 patients, EMG tracings recorded several months after the acute episode showed myogenic abnormalities. Computer-aided analysis of motor units showed a 42% reduction in mean duration of the motor unit collected from the brachial biceps and a 44% reduction of signal energy as compared with controls.…

Ventilation in exercise studied with circulatory occlusion.

Five male subjects exercised on a cycle ergometer (100 W) for 8 min; circulation to the legs was occluded by cuffs during the first 2 and last 2 min. Ventilation (VE), oxygen intake (VO2), and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) were measured breath by breath. Repeat studies were used to follow arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) and rebreathing mixed venous PCO2 (PVCO2). The results were compared to studies without cuffing, but which were otherwise identical. The initial period of cuffing was associated with marked hyperpnea, high VE/VCO2 ratio, and low PaCO2 and PVCO2. Following release of occlusion at the end o
