Acetylation of hemoglobin by aspirin and other acetylating agents has been used to generate hemoglobin analogs with altered structural and functional properties, and may prove useful in the treatment of sickle cell disease. We have studied the acetylation of human hemoglobin using [1'-(13)C]acetylsalicylic acid in combination with two-dimensional HMQC and HSQC NMR analysis. Protoporphyrin-protoheme hybrid hemoglobins (Hb), in which the protohemes (Fe) in either the alpha- or beta-subunits were substituted with protoporphyrins IX (PP) alpha(PP)2 beta(Fe)2 and alpha(Fe)2 beta(PP)2 have been prepared. A hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carrier was successfully transfused into rats. An ultrapure lipid-free bovine Hb was prepared by hypotonic dialysis and ultrafiltration. The Hb was polymerized with glutaraldehyde and the P50 was 24.3 mm Hg. On the basis of immunological analysis, immuno-dot blot, the Hb preparations were not antigenic. A 27-year-old female patient with alcoholic cirrhosis was reported. She was admitted to the hospital because of jaundice and ascites after heavy drinking. She had a history of drinking Japanese Sake in quantities of more than 5 go/day (900 ml/day) for 7 years. On admission, she was icteric, and had both hepatosplenomegaly and ascites. Sonography is a safe and suitable diagnostic tool; to date it appears to be the most valuable method for detecting renal cystic lesions. In particular ultrasound examination, if a wider district is screened, can demonstrate the coexistence of the cystic disease in different organs. The Authors report a case of renal polycyctic disease in which the sonographic examination was extended to the entire abdomen disclosing simultaneous involvement of the kidneys and the liver.

The relation between the dietary phytate (InsP6), mineral status and InsP6 levels in the organism, using three controlled diets (AIN-76A, AIN-76A + 1% phytate, AIN-76A + 6% carob seed germ), are studied. AIN-76A is a purified diet in which InsP6 is practically absent.
