The mechanism for decreased insulin sensitivity in pregnant women is not fully clarified. Resistin, a novel peptide hormone, is specifically expressed in the adipose tissue and decreases insulin sensitivity in rodents. In the present study, we demonstrate resistin gene expression in the human placental tissue, mainly in trophoblastic cells. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and association of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the cervices and placentas of pregnant women.
METHODS: Cervical samples were taken from 179 of 226 women who had placental biopsies because of abnormal ultrasound findings or were older than 35 years, to detect HPV infections with hybrid capture II tests. We investigated the transfer of three antioxidants - melatonin, S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) and various forms of vitamin E - across the term, normal human placenta. A case of multifocal hemangioendothelioma of the liver, adrenal gland, and placenta is reported. The histological appearance of the tumor is consistent with an infantile hemangioendothelioma, type 2. Multifocal development is the most obvious explanation for the disease but the possibility that this represents malignant placental neoplasm with metastases requires consideration.

The diagnosis of abruptio placentae is based on clinical symptoms and the classical presentation seldom causes diagnostic doubt. There is no significant correlation between the presenting symptoms and degree of placental abruption. Additional diagnostic parameters would be useful in cases with few symptoms. The survey describes the clinical presentation and diagnosis. The use of paraclinical tests in diagnosing, monitoring and estimating prognosis in cases with suspicion of abruptio placentae is reviewed.

Two cases with trisomy 16 confined to the placenta are presented. Prenatal diagnosis was indicated because of fetal growth retardation. In case 1, a phenotypically normal but small-for-date boy was born. In case 2, the fetus turned out to be triploid on cordocentesis. In both instances the trisomy 16 was recovered from the placenta. Widespread cocaine use has caused concern about possible harmful effects during pregnancy. Several studies have suggested an increased incidence of abruptio placentae and stillbirths with cocaine use during pregnancy. The paper reports a case of diffuse placental hemangioma leading to intrauterine fetal death. Contrary to other cases reported in the literature, polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios and fetal malformations were not observed. The sole finding was a dilatation of the cardiac auricle, in particular on the right-hand side. It is hypothesised that fetal death was due to two concomitant factors: the severe hypoxemic state and the difficulty of venous drainage from the fetus to the mother owing to increased materno-fetal placental shunts.

In a prospective study 90 patients who had confirmed abruption of the placenta were compared with a control group. Significantly more patients who had abruptio placentae were unmarried, smoked cigarettes, received no antenatal care, had coitus within the 48 hours preceding delivery, developed intrapartum hypertension and had a lower ponderal index than the controls. More patients with abruptio placentae had proteinuria and antepartum hypertension but statistical significance was not reached. In addition, the incidence of intra-uterine growth retardation was higher in these patients.
