Diabetic foot ulcers, the typical manifestation of diabetic chronic wounds, pose a severe global public health burden. Such lesions feature a hyperglycemic microenvironment, sustained inflammation, severe oxidative stress, defective angiogenesis and recurrent bacterial infection, collectively leading to protracted healing, high relapse rates and elevated amputation risk. Natural polysaccharides, biocompatible and biodegradable macromolecules with low immunogenicity, exhibit versatile biofunctions including antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic and immunomodulatory effec

Nitrification drives nitrogen loss in agricultural systems, resulting in leached nitrate and increased emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide, thereby reducing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) provides a promising nature-based solution to low-NUE by suppressing nitrifying microorganisms via plant-exuded bioactive metabolites. Although BNI is well documented in several major cereal grasses, evidence of BNI in barley (Hordeum vulgare) is lacking. This study demonstrates barley BNI activity through suppression of rhizosphere ammonia-oxidizer abundanc

Chronic non-healing wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers, persist as a significant clinical challenge due to the limited availability of therapeutic options and the complexity of their pathological microenvironments. Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs), which are nanoscale lipid carriers rich in bioactive molecules, have emerged as a promising therapeutic approach due to their low immunogenicity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and their ability to promote angiogenesis. Structurally, the biomaterial protects the integrity of PDEVs and extends their residency through mo

Managing wounds and accompanying consequences like exudation and microbiological infections is challenging in clinical practice. Bioactive compounds from traditional medicinal plants help heal wounds, although their bioavailability is low. This study uses sodium alginate (SA), gelatin (G), and Santalum album oil (SAL) to 3D print a polymeric hydrogel scaffold to circumvent these difficulties. The 3D printed scaffolds showed hydrophilicity, an average pore size of 221.30 ± 19.83 µm, adequate swelling, higher mechanical strength with tensile strength (σ) of 13.5 ± 1.08 MPa, a Young's modulus of

Glasses exposed to soil environments are of interest across various scientific fields, from nuclear waste containment to archaeological preservation and nutrient-delivery systems for plants. While immersion experiments provide valuable insights into the ion release kinetics in root- and microbe-exuded solutions, they fail to replicate the complexities of nutrient leaching in real soil conditions. To address this, the degradation behavior of nutrient-bearing glasses (41SiO2·6(10)P2O5·20K2O·33(29)MgO/CaO/MgO + CaO) with increasing sulfate contents was investigated through a soil incubation exper

Laser photobiomodulation (LPBM) has been shown to be one of the possible modulating agents of inflammation. Similarly, medicinal plants, such as chamomile (Matricaria recutita) are also used with the same purpose. To evaluate tissue repair in the dorsum of the tongue of rats under topical use of chamomile alone and in association with LPBM. Seventy-five male Wistar rats received a standardized wound on the dorsum of the tongue and were allocated into experimental groups: Control (G1), Chamomile Fluid extract (G2), Chamomile Infusion (G3), Laser (G4), Chamomile Infusion + Laser (G5). Cerasus × yedoensis (cherry 'Somei-yoshino' Fujino) is affected by bacterial gall disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. cerasicola (PSC). C. × yedoensis is often infected with PSC under weak light intensity, which indicates that susceptibility of C. × yedoensis to PSC is affected by light. To evaluate the effects of white light intensity and different light qualities, white or blue, on bacterial gall disease development, we quantitatively assessed the anatomical and histological features of bacterial-inoculated sites on branches of 2-year-old potted C. × yedoensis seedlings grown under di

Pteropodine (PT) is a component of some plants with potentially useful pharmacological activities for humans. This compound has biomedical properties related to the modulation of the immune system, nervous system, and inflammatory processes. This study addresses the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of pteropodin in a murine model of arthritis and induced edema of the mouse ear. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity, we used the reversed passive Arthus reaction (RPAR), which includes the rat paw edema test, the rat pleurisy test, and a mouse ear edema model. The antioxidant effec

Triadimefon is a fungicide that is broadly used to treat fungal diseases of plants. It causes developmental toxicity in the animal model. Whether triadimefon disrupts the placental function and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Thirty-six female pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into four groups and were orally administered via gavage of triadimefon (0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day) for 10 days from gestational day (GD) 12-21. Triadimefon disrupted the structure of the placenta, leading to hypertrophy, abnormal hemodynamics, including fibrin exudation, edema, hemorrhage,

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by inflammation. Although IBD is usually treated with anti-inflammatory agents, most of these treatments have limited efficacy. Propolis is a viscous mixture that honeybees produce by mixing saliva and honeycomb with exudate gathered from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. Although propolis has proved to ameliorate several inflammatory disorders, its therapeutic properties vary by geographical location, plant resources, bee species, and the solvents used in the extraction. In this

Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul (Fabaceae family), commonly known as the red angico tree, is a medicinal plant found throughout Brazil's semi-arid area. In this study, a chemical analysis was performed to investigate the antidiarrheal activity and safety profile of red angico gum (RAG), a biopolymer extracted from the trunk exudate of A. colubrina. Upon FT-IR spectroscopy, RAG showed bands in the regions of 1608 cm-1, 1368 cm-1, and 1029 cm-1, which relate to the vibration of O-H water molecules, deformation vibration of C-O bands, and vibration of the polysaccharide C-O

Different bacterial traits can contribute to the biocontrol of soilborne phytopathogenic fungus. Among others, (1) antagonism, (2) competition for nutrients and niches, (3) induction of systemic resistance of the plants and (4) predation and parasitism are the most studied. Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 is an antagonistic rhizobacterium that produces the antifungal metabolite 2-hexyl, 5-propyl resorcinol (HPR). This bacterium can biologically control the avocado white root rot caused by Rosellinia necatrix. Confocal laser scanning microscopy of the avocado rhizosphere revealed that this bio

The objective of this study was to identify the causative agent of cellulitis in turkeys. Eighteen flocks from nine producers were sampled at the local processing plant, and 37 birds with cellulitis on legs or caudal thoracic area were obtained. None of the 37 birds with cellulitis had lesions in other organs. On gross examination, lesions were categorized into two groups: cellulitis with unopened skin lesions (type a) and cellulitis with opened skin lesions (type b). Histopathologically, cellulitis with unopened skin lesions had dermal necrosis with underlying fibrin and inflammatory exudate

Nodulation is reviewed in terms of the phenotypes proposed by Vincent (1980). Individual legumes may be infectible by one or more of the three bacterial genera (collectively known as rhizobia) Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, or Azorhizobium. The type of infection process by which rhizobia gain entry is largely governed by the host genotype. In addition to the widely studied root-hair pathway, infections may be associated with lateral root emergence or occur between root epidermal cells. The exact chemical and physical nature of the root hair/epidermal cell wall is likely to be a critical factor in

We report the functional outcome of a patient who had undergone Boston keratoprosthesis type I for extensive ocular surface damage caused by latex of Euphorbia. The milky sap or latex of the Euphorbia plant is highly toxic and an irritant to the skin and eye. Damage to the eye ranges from mild to severe corneal edema, epithelial defects, anterior uveitis, secondary elevated intraocular pressure and, rarely, limbal stem cell deficiency with corneal neovascularization. A restrospective review was conducted of this patient for more than 1 year. During this period he was given subconjunctival beva

Allelopathy is associated with biodiversity loss and assemblage changes in Solidago invaded plots. Although plant-allelopathic effects are well documented, little is known about the toxicity of goldenrod allelochemicals to invertebrates, despite its high biomass production and release of bioactive compounds via volatilization, root exudation or during decomposition, whereas the lack of information is especially evident for the new hybrid S. × niederederi. We conducted a laboratory experiment to assess the effect of water extracts and essential oils derived from the invasive Solidago canadensis
