Diversity at the HYP1 locus in potato cyst nematodes does not result from developmentally-programmed somatic mutations.

Most genetic diversity stems from spontaneous mutations, that is, errors in DNA repair or replication. But for dozens of organisms across the tree of life, mutations at specific loci are not spontaneous but developmentally programmed: effectively, some organisms edit their own DNA sequences. This is perhaps most common among pathogens and parasites, many of which use editing to diversify genes that produce important antigens. Plant-parasitic potato cyst nematodes are damaging agricultural pests that establish a lifelong feeding site inside the root of their host plant. We previously observed e

Chitosan as an Antimicrobial, Anti-Insect, and Growth-Promoting Agent for Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Plants.

A growing trend in plant protection is replacing chemical preparations with environmentally friendly biological compositions. Chitosan, due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity, is an effective agent against plant diseases. The purpose of the study was to evaluate chitosan as a potential biopesticide for potato plants. Three variants of chitosan were tested: high (310-375 kDa, >75% deacetylated), medium (190-310 kDa, 75-85% deacetylated), and low (50-190 kDa, 75-85% deacetylated) molecular weight. The chitosan variants were dissolved in lactic and succinic acids and teste

Peptaibiotics: Harnessing the potential of microbial secondary metabolites for mitigation of plant pathogens.

Agricultural systems are in need of low-cost, safe antibiotics to protect crops from pests and diseases. Peptaibiotics, a family of linear, membrane-active, amphipathic polypeptides, have been shown to exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity, and to be inducers of plant resistance against a wide range of phytopathogens. Peptaibiotics belong to the new generation of alternatives to agrochemicals, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the One Health approach toward ensuring global food security and safety. Despite that, these fungi-derived, non-ribos

Ebola Entry Inhibitors Discovered from Maesa perlarius.

Ebola virus disease (EVD), a disease caused by infection with Ebola virus (EBOV), is characterized by hemorrhagic fever and a high case fatality rate. With limited options for the treatment of EVD, anti-Ebola viral therapeutics need to be urgently developed. In this study, over 500 extracts of medicinal plants collected in the Lingnan region were tested against infection with Ebola-virus-pseudotyped particles (EBOVpp), leading to the discovery of Maesa perlarius as an anti-EBOV plant lead. The methanol extract (MPBE) of the stems of this plant showed an inhibitory effect against EBOVpp, with a

Ecophysiology and nutritional niche of the bilby (Macrotis lagotis), an omnivorous marsupial from inland Australia: a review.

The bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a small omnivorous marsupial that was once widespread but is now restricted to the most arid margins of its former range. It feeds on a mixture of invertebrates (mainly ants and termites) and plant material (mainly seeds and bulbs), most of which is below ground. Measurements of the energy and water requirements of free-living bilbies and of the maintenance nitrogen requirements of captive animals provided the basis for an explanation for its continued survival in the Australian arid zone. Measurements of the mean retention times of inert markers for the solute

New evidence for mammaliaform ear evolution and feeding adaptation in a Jurassic ecosystem.

Stem mammaliaforms are forerunners to modern mammals, and they achieved considerable ecomorphological diversity in their own right. Recent discoveries suggest that eleutherodontids, a subclade of Haramiyida, were more species-rich during the Jurassic period in Asia than previously recognized. Here we report a new Jurassic eleutherodontid mammaliaform with an unusual mosaic of highly specialized characteristics, and the results of phylogenetic analyses that support the hypothesis that haramiyidans are stem mammaliaforms. The new fossil shows fossilized skin membranes that are interpreted to be

Geological Substrate Effects on Teucrium montanum L. (Lamiaceae) Morphological Traits: Geometric Morphometrics Approach.

The shape-environment relationship in plants refers to the ways in which the physical characteristics and structures of plants are influenced by their environment. Plants have evolved a remarkable ability to adapt to their specific habitats, and their shape and form play a crucial role in determining their survival and reproductive success. This study aimed to examine differences in size and shape between morphological traits in mountain germander (Teucrium montanum L.) from different geological substrates (calcareous and serpentinite). For this study, 400 individuals of T. montanum from 20 po

The Chromatin Remodeling Factor BrCHR39 Targets DNA Methylation to Positively Regulate Apical Dominance in Brassica rapa.

The SHPRH (SNF2, histone linker, PHD, RING, helicase) subfamily belonging to ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling factor is the effective tumor-suppressor, which can polyubiquitinate PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and participate in post-replication repair in human. However, little is known about the functions of SHPRH proteins in plants. In this study, we identified a novel SHPRH member BrCHR39 and obtained BrCHR39-silenced transgenic Brassica rapa. In contrast to wild-type plants, transgenic Brassica plants exhibited a released apical dominance phenotype with semi-dwarfism and multi

Distribution of Lily symptomless virus in tissues of Lanzhou lily (Lilium davidii var. unicolor) by fluorescence in situ hybridisation.

Lily symptomless virus (LSV) is one of the main viruses that endanger Lilium davidii var. unicolor, causing billions of losses to the lily planting industry every year. The distribution of viruses in plants is uneven and identifying the virus-free tissue regions in lily is crucial for obtaining virus-free resources through in vitro culture. In this study, Lilium davidii var. unicolor carrying LSV was used as the experimental material. RNA fluorescent probes were designed and prepared based on the genomic sequence of LSV. RNA in situ hybridization experiments were conducted on the meristematic

Effect of Wheat Cultivars and Blends on the Oviposition and Larval Mortality of Cephus cinctus (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) and Parasitism by Bracon cephi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

The wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Norton) is a major historical pest of wheat in the northern Great Plains of North America. The insect spends most of its life as a larva protected inside grass stems so that its management has relied on strategies other than insecticides. We conducted a study in southern Alberta from 2006-2009 to assess the effects of wheat species, cultivar, seeding rate, and blending a resistant and a vulnerable cultivar, on oviposition, larval infestation, and cutting damage. The mortality caused by its primary parasitoid, Bracon cephi (Gahan), was also assessed to inve
