"It was tidak cocok (incompatible)": Incompatibility, Decoloniality, and Vaccine Hesitancy in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

In 2018, vaccine hesitancy marked the nationwide measles-rubella vaccination campaign in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The hesitancy, which was supported by the provincial government, stemmed from concerns over porcine contamination in the vaccine product. "Tidak cocok" (incompatible) became a pervasive statement used to rationalize the refusal to participate in the vaccination program, permeated personal narratives, public responses to a vaccine allergy case, and an official meeting to determine the vaccination campaign's future. In this article, I theorize incompatibility as a lexical ite

Silences and Omissions in Reporting Epidemics in Russian and Soviet Prisons, 1890-2021.

Penitentiary systems serve as breeding grounds for all kinds of diseases. Drawing upon new archival materials, this article examines the history of the management and reporting of epidemics in the Russian prison system from the late Imperial period to the present day. We use the case studies of cholera (1892-1893), typhus (1932-1933), and pulmonary tuberculosis (the 1990s) to examine how the general political and social conjuncture at different times affected the response of prison authorities to epidemics to show that, notwithstanding major shifts in society and polity, there was continuity i

Cultivating cultural capital and transforming cultural fields: A study with arts and disability organisations in Europe.

This article critically discusses participation by people with disabilities in the arts, drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital. It is informed by a qualitative study with representatives of organisations working on arts and disability in 22 European countries. The article highlights that experiences of inequality at various levels, including within education systems, and medicalised understandings of what disability is, continue to hamper arts participation and development of cultural capital by people with disabilities. A Bourdieusian analysis unveils how organisations work

Contesting the crisis narrative: epidemic accounts in Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Scientists and global commentators watched African countries closely in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, predicting an impending disaster: the virus was projected to overwhelm already weak health systems. These expectations were informed by imaginaries of Africa as an inevitable site of epidemic disaster. This paper draws on accounts from Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Democratic Republic of the Congo to contrast global catastrophe framings with everyday imaginations and experiences of crisis and crisis management. Utilising ethnographic research, the paper initially explores how COVID-

Privacy lost: Appropriating surveillance technology in China's fight against COVID-19.

China's unprecedented measures to mobilize its diverse surveillance apparatus played a key part in the country's successful containment of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Critics worldwide believe these invasive technologies, in the hands of an authoritarian regime, could trample the right to privacy and curb fundamental civil and human rights. However, there is little domestic public resistance in China about technology-related privacy risks during the pandemic. Drawing on academic research and a semantic network analysis of media frames, we explore the contextual political and cultural bel

[To what extent Africa can limit the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic?].

Following the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the alerts issued by the World Health Organization, for several months attention has been focused on Africa as a potentially severely endangered continent. A sizable number of African countries, mainly low and middle income, suffer from limited available resources, especially in critical care, and COVID-19 is liable to overwhelm their already fragile health systems. To effectively manage what is shaping up as a multidimensional crisis, the challenge unquestionably goes beyond the necessary upgrading of public health infrastructures. It is

Altered brain network topology in left-behind children: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Whether a lack of direct parental care affects brain function in children is an important question, particularly in developing countries where hundreds of millions of children are left behind when their parents migrate for economic or political reasons. In this study, we investigated changes in the topological architectures of brain functional networks in left-behind children (LBC). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 26 LBC and 21 children living within their nuclear family (non-LBC). LBC showed a significant increase in the normalized characteristic pa

[Towards the elimination of onchocerciasis at the global scale: history, challenges and future prospects].

The total number of patients with onchocerciasis on the African continent was estimated in 2008 at 25720000. The control strategy for onchocerciasis has dramatically changed during the last 30 years, resulting in a decrease of patients. Vector control was mainly used until around 1990. Since then, the strategy has been transferred to "Mass Drug Administration using Ivermectin". An "Integrated Approach" for several endemic diseases has become a popular control strategy since 2005. Several tasks remain for eliminating onchocerciais: improvement of the population coverage of drug distribution, co

Controlling sleeping sickness - a review.

Following a period characterized by severe epidemics of sleeping sickness, restoration of effective control and surveillance systems has raised the question of eliminating the disease from sub-Saharan Africa. Given sufficient political and financial support, elimination is now considered a reasonable aim in countries reporting zero or less than 100 cases per year. This success may lead health authorities across the affected region to downgrade the disease from 'neglected' to simply being ignored. In view of the significant levels of under-reporting of sleeping sickness mortality in rural commu

Fuzzy organ allocation system for cadaveric kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The recipient selection decision for a cadaveric donor kidney is complex and based on multiple criteria, not only medical but also ethical and political criteria. METHODS: In this study, we develop the Fuzzy Organ Allocation System (FORAS) to determine who among potential recipients receives a cadaveric kidney when it becomes available. FORAS balances various kidney allocation objectives and deals with the ambiguity and fuzziness in the allocation process. RESULTS: We used simulation to investigate how well FORAS represents the thinking of a transplant physician with regard to ki

The global status of schistosomiasis and its control.

Schistosomiasis is being successfully controlled in many countries but remains a major public health problem, with an estimated 200 million people infected, mostly in Africa. Few countries in this region have undertaken successful and sustainable control programmes. The construction of water schemes to meet the power and agricultural requirements for development have lead to increasing transmission, especially of Schistosoma mansoni. Increasing population and movement have contributed to increased transmission and introduction of schistosomiasis to new areas. Most endemic countries are among t

Empirical, ethical, and political perspectives on the use of methylphenidate.

The case for methylphenidate (MPH) (Ritalin) rests on claims that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder, that ADHD is biologically rooted, that MPH is effective against ADHD, that nontreatment is developmentally hazardous, and that MPH is a relatively innocuous rather than dangerous treatment. It will be found that the case for MPH rests on the hope that ADHD is a biological disorder and on MPH's short-term suppression of disruptive behavior. The explosion of MPH use on this flimsy evidential base can be explained within a political economy analysis but is difficult to

Intra-action review of West African health Organization's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Economic Community of West African states (ECOWAS) region, 2020 - 2022.

BACKGROUND: The West African Health Organization (WAHO) coordinated the regional response to COVID-19 across the 15 ECOWAS Member States. The scale and duration of the pandemic exposed structural weaknesses requiring systematic evaluation. This intra-action review (IAR) assessed WAHO’s performance, operational gaps, and lessons learned from 2020 to 2022 to strengthen future regional preparedness and response. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was used, integrating a targeted desk review, an online survey of WAHO staff, Member State focal points, and liaison officers, 18 key informant

Possible Consequences of Cannabis Legalization - What Do Research Show?

BACKGROUND: Indian hemp (lat. Cannabis sativa subs. Indica) has been used as a source of industrial fiber, seed oil, food, medicine for some somatic diseases, and it is also used as a psychoactive substance. Cannabis can be used by smoking, evaporation, as a food ingredient, or as an extract. Acute and chronic cannabis use has been shown to be detrimental to several aspects of psychological and physical health and many experimental studies done on healthy people indicate the potential of Δ9- tetra hydro cannabinoid (THC) in inducing transient, dose-dependent psychotic symptoms, but also affect

[Delayed Onset of PTSD - A Problem for Diagnosis and Litigation - with Special Reference to Political Imprisonment in the GDR].

More often than is generally assumed: according to 2 metaanalyses, an average of about 25% of all cases of PTSD are not definitively diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) until 6 months or more after their trauma. Its prevalence varies widely depending on the given population. Delayed onset PTSD is diagnosed in military personnel much more often than in the civilian population (38,2 vs. 15,3%) . The divergence in PTSD's prevalence numbers is attributed to differences in its definition, methodology, and target population, as well as the type of trauma. The longer the observation

Genetic aspects of population policy.

Every science begins in folklore and matures as it reacts against dogma and myth. Astronomy developed in the Neolithic, but it did not outgrow astrology until the sixteenth century. Chemistry discarded alchemy at about the same time. On the contrary, the short history of genetics has been concurrent with the pseudo-science of eugenics, which, at times, has been widely accepted and incorporated in population policy and directive genetic counselling, with rare opposition by geneticists. Societal pressures are likely to increase with the power of genetic technology, the fear it generates and the

Modeling the 1998 Bahr el Ghazal famine in Southern Sudan.

This paper explores the use of system dynamics modeling to better understand the 1998 Bahr el Ghazal famine in southern Sudan. Based on expert interviews and a literature review, it presents a set of causal loop diagrams that clarify the complex dynamics involved in the crisis, demonstrating how three major political 'holds' permitted a self-reinforcing famine system to form. A simulation of this model generates similar outcomes in mortality and malnutrition to those that occurred in the actual crisis. Based on this analysis, the paper suggests several ways that modeling could have supported a

Upholding the right to health of forcibly displaced children in Europe.

In 2023 Europe hosted an estimated 9 million children who had been forcibly displaced from their homes because of conflict, persecution, violence, natural or environmental disasters, climate crisis, human trafficking and extreme poverty. Their experiences pre, during and post migration impact their health, wellbeing and development. Countries across the European Region have a moral and legal duty to uphold the right to health of all children living within their borders, irrespective of immigration status. However, many countries are falling short of delivering on these obligations. The rise in

Prejudice and politics in cognitive-behavioral therapy: An indigenous perspective from Aotearoa-New Zealand and Australia.

The political dimensions of cognitive-behavioral practice are considered in the context of a range of social justice issues, including the marginalization of minorities following colonization, and the role that research and practice play in supporting conditions that maintain trauma and injustice with disempowered peoples. It is argued that critical issues for CBT practitioners who engage with Indigenous peoples in Australasia include appreciating the narrow lens of legitimization, understanding their limited capacity to account for the impacts of systemic oppression, and accommodating points
