Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the angiogenic and lymphangiogenic pathways are associated with lymphedema caused by Wuchereria bancrofti.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema (LE) is a chronic clinical manifestation of filarial nematode infections characterized by lymphatic dysfunction and subsequent accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial space-lymphatic filariasis. A number of studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with primary and secondary LE. To assess SNPs associated with LE caused by lymphatic filariasis, a cross-sectional study of unrelated Ghanaian volunteers was designed to genotype SNPs in 285 LE patients as cases and 682 infected patients without pathology as controls. One hundred

Analysis of Serum Cytokines and Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms of SOD1, SOD2, and CAT in Erysipelas Patients.

Increased free radical production had been documented in group A (β-hemolytic) streptococcus infection cases. Comparing 71 erysipelas patients to 55 age-matched healthy individuals, we sought for CAT, SOD1, and SOD2 single polymorphism mutation (SNPs) interactions with erysipelas' predisposition and serum cytokine levels in the acute and recovery phases of erysipelas infection. Whereas female patients had a higher predisposition to erysipelas, male patients were prone to having a facial localization of the infection. The presence of SOD1 G7958, SOD2 T2734, and CAT C262 alleles was linked to er

Associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms of human exonuclease 1 and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Single camera markerless motion capture has the potential to facilitate at home movement assessment due to the ease of setup, portability, and affordable cost of the technology. However, it is not clear what the current healthcare applications of single camera markerless motion capture are and what information is being collected that may be used to inform clinical decision making. This review aims to map the available literature to highlight potential use cases and identify the limitations of the technology for clinicians and researchers interested in the collection of movement dat

Association Study of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Rs4552569/Rs17095830 with Ankylosing Spondylitis in A Chinese Population.

Genetics play a key role in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). A previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) showed that rs4552569 (on 5q14.3) and rs17095830 (on 12q12) were associated with the risk of AS in Han Chinese, which was not replicated in other two studies. In the current study, rs4552569 and rs17095830 were genotyped in 735 Han Chinese AS patients and 1204 healthy controls using high resolution melting analysis (HRMA). We compared the distributions of genotypes and alleles between AS cases and healthy controls. Rs30187 and rs10865331, which were reported to be associated with AS suscept

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in dopamine receptor D1 are associated with heroin dependence but not impulsive behavior.

Previous studies suggested that dopamine receptors may be associated with drug dependence and impulsive behavior. In this study, we examined whether dopamine receptor D1 (DRD1) is associated with heroin dependence and the impulsive behavior in patients with heroin dependence. The participants included 367 patients with heroin dependence and 372 healthy controls from a Chinese Han population. We examined the potential association between heroin dependence and 8 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (rs686, rs4867798, rs1799914, rs4532, rs5326, rs265981, rs10078714, rs10078866) of DRD1, and the associ

Differential diagnosis of Brucella abortus by real-time PCR based on a single-nucleotide polymorphisms.

To diagnose brucellosis effectively, many genus- and species-specific detection methods based on PCR have been developed. With conventional PCR assays, real-time PCR techniques have been developed as rapid diagnostic tools. Among them, real-time PCR using hybridization probe (hybprobe) has been recommended for bacteria with high DNA homology among species, with which it is possible to make an accurate diagnosis by means of an amplification curve and melting peak analysis. A hybprobe for B. abortus was designed from a specific single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on the fbaA gene. This probe on

Ulcerative colitis neoplasia is not associated with common inflammatory bowel disease single-nucleotide polymorphisms.

BACKGROUND: Neoplasia complicating ulcerative colitis (UC-neoplasia) is a problem that is poorly addressed by present surveillance techniques. The association of greater than 300 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suggests the possibility that certain genetic polymorphisms might identify patients with UC destined for malignant degeneration. This present study tested the hypothesis that presently known IBD-associated SNPs may correlate with UC-neoplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 41 patients with UC-neoplasia (mean age 56 ± 2.1 years) were iden

Association of single nucleotide polymorphisms in ERCC2 gene and their haplotypes with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide, occurs at a relatively high frequency in China. To investigate whether common excision repair cross-complementing rodent repair group 2 (ERCC2) variants (rs3916874 G>C, rs238415 C>G, rs1618536 G>A, rs1799793 G>A, and rsl3181 A>C) were associated with ESCC risk, a case-control study was conducted, including 405 cases with ESCC and 405 age and sex 1:1 matched cancer-free controls. The result showed that rsl3181 AC/CC genotypes was associated with an increased risk of ESCC (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.05-2.00)

The impact of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in OGG1 and XPC on the age at onset of Huntington disease.

The age at onset of Huntington disease (HD) shows a strong, negative correlation with the number of CAG repeats within the huntingtin (HTT) gene. However, this does not account for all the inter-individual variability seen among patients. In order to assess whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the OGG1 and XPC genes, both implicated in responses to oxidative stress, are associated with the age of onset of HD, 9 SNPs have been genotyped in 299 individuals with HD and 582 controls. After correction for multiple testing, two OGG1/XPC haplotypes were found to be associated with younge

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter regions of Foxp3 and ICOSLG genes are associated with Alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune disease affecting anagen stage hair follicles, is associated with polymorphisms in immune-related genes and with decreased number of CD4+ CD25+ T regulatory cells (Treg). Treg function is modulated by the forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3) transcription factor and by inducible costimulator (ICOS), through interaction with the relative ligand, ICOSLG, whose genes are polymorphic. The aim of the study was to investigate whether specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the rs2294020 FOXP3 and/or rs378299 ICOSLG genes may be associated with AA. A case-cont

Estimating the genetic variance of major depressive disorder due to all single nucleotide polymorphisms.

Genome-wide association studies of psychiatric disorders have been criticized for their lack of explaining a considerable proportion of the heritability established in twin and family studies. Genome-wide association studies of major depressive disorder in particular have so far been unsuccessful in detecting genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Using two recently proposed methods designed to estimate the heritability of a phenotype that is attributable to genome-wide SNPs, we show that SNPs on current platforms contain substantial information concerning the additive

An association study of single nucleotide polymorphisms of the FOXP3 intron-1 and the risk of Psoriasis vulgaris.

Psoriasis vulgaris (PV) is a common autoimmune disease that involves the dysfunction of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells. FOXP3 is a key transcription factor in the development and function of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells. Previous studies have demonstrated a genetic association between the FOXP3 gene and some autoimmune diseases. To elucidate the association between the FOXP3 gene and the risk of PV, 408 patients diagnosed with PV and 363 age and sex-matched healthy controls from a cohort of the Chinese majority Han population were recruited. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs2232365, rs376

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes in Chilean subjects with polygenic hypercholesterolemia and controls.

BACKGROUND: The excretion of cholesterol from liver and intestine is regulated by ATP-binding cassette half-transporters ABCG5 and ABCG8. Polymorphisms in their genes have been related to higher levels of plasma lipids. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible association between the 1950C > G (ABCG5) and the 251A > G (ABCG8) polymorphisms and the presence of hypercholesterolemia (HC) in Chilean subjects. METHODS: A total of 118 non-related individuals with HC (total cholesterol, TC > or = 6.2 mmol/L) and 104 normolipidemic subjects (controls, TC < or = 5.17 mmol/L), ag

Cloning, sequencing and identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms of partial sequence on the porcine CACNA1S gene.

CACNA1S gene encodes the alpha1 subunit of the calcium channel. The mutation of CACNA1S gene can cause hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoKPP) and maliglant hyperthermia synarome (MHS) in human beings. Current research on CACNA1S was mainly in human being and model animal, but rarely in livestock and poultry. In this study, Yorkshire pigs (23), Pietrain pigs (30), Jinhua pigs (115) and the second generation (126) of crossbred of Jinhua and Pietrain were used. Primers were designed according to the sequence of human CACNA1S gene and PCR was carried out using pig genome DNA. PCR products were s

Discriminatory accuracy from single-nucleotide polymorphisms in models to predict breast cancer risk.

One purpose for seeking common alleles that are associated with disease is to use them to improve models for projecting individualized disease risk. Two genome-wide association studies and a study of candidate genes recently identified seven common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were associated with breast cancer risk in independent samples. These seven SNPs were located in FGFR2, TNRC9 (now known as TOX3), MAP3K1, LSP1, CASP8, chromosomal region 8q, and chromosomal region 2q35. I used estimates of relative risks and allele frequencies from these studies to estimate how much these
