Bone mineral density of vertebrae, proximal femur and os calcis in normal Greek subjects as assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry: comparison with other populations.

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an established method for the detection of even small changes in bone mineral density (BMD). It thus allows the earliest possible diagnosis of osteopenia, with consequent prompt estimation of fracture risk. However, for proper evaluation of densitometry results it is essential that a comparison with reference BMD values of normal age- and sex-matched persons from the same population be performed. For this purpose we determined bone density of the L2-L4 vertebrae, the L3 vertebra in the lateral projection, the proximal femur and the os calcis in a cross

Bidirectional association between cognitive impairment and bone mineral density reduction in aging populations: A systematic review and meta-analysis of osteoporosis, osteopenia, and bone mineral content.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD), increasing fracture risk. Cognitive disorders (CD), including Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), cause cognitive decline and are prevalent among older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis explores the bidirectional association between cognitive impairment and bone health, specifically low BMD, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. Comprehensive searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library through August 15, 2024. Eligible observational studies ass

Association between blood Loa loa microfilarial density and proteinuria levels in a rural area of the Republic of Congo (the MorLo project): a population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Case reports have hypothesised that proteinuria, sometimes with glomerulopathy or nephrotic syndromes, might be associated with loiasis. To our knowledge, no study has been done to assess this association. We aimed to investigate the association between Loa loa microfilariae burden and proteinuria. METHODS: We did a cross-sectional study between May 16, 2022, and June 11, 2022, to assess the relationship between Loa loa microfilaraemia densities and proteinuria in a rural area of the Republic of Congo. We included all consenting adults living in the target area at study commenceme

Association between uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and chronic kidney disease in middle-aged and older adults: results from two nationally representative population-based study.

Uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) is considered a novel marker of inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the UHR and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in middle-aged and older adults. This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The association between UHR and CKD prevalence was analyzed using weighted multivariable logistic regression models. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to analyze nonlinear relationships.

Additive association of vitamin D insufficiency and sarcopenia with low femoral bone mineral density in noninstitutionalized elderly population: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2009-2010.

UNLABELLED: Vitamin D insufficiency and sarcopenia are crucial risk factors for osteoporosis. In a study of noninstitutionalized elderly subjects, we investigated the simultaneous effect of vitamin D and sarcopenia on bone mineral density (BMD) and found that sarcopenia was associated with low BMD in the femur, especially in those with suboptimal vitamin D levels. INTRODUCTION: Although vitamin D insufficiency and sarcopenia are prevalent in the elderly population worldwide, their possible influence on BMD has not been determined. We aimed to investigate the different effect of vitamin D insu

No association between the very low density lipoprotein receptor gene and late-onset Alzheimer's disease nor interaction with the apolipoprotein E gene in population-based and clinic samples.

It is now commonly known that possession of one of the three common alleles of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene (allele epsilon 4) confers an increased risk for both familial and sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD), and that this risk is dose-dependent. Other genes that may play a role in AD, either through independent association with the disease or through modification of the existing APOE risk, are under investigation. One such gene, the very low density lipoprotein receptor (VLDL-R) gene, was reported by Okuizumi et al. to be independently associated with AD in a Japanese population, but not

Virus isolations and high population density implicate Culex antennatus (Becker) (Diptera: Culicidae) as a vector of Rift Valley Fever virus during an outbreak in the Nile Delta of Egypt.

In June, 2003, Egypt's hospital-based electronic disease surveillance system began to record increased cases of acute febrile illness from governorates in the Nile Delta. In response to a request for assistance from the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) provided assistance in identifying the cause and extent of this outbreak. Testing of human clinical samples (n=375) from nine governorates in Egypt identified 29 cases of RVF viremia that spanned the period of June to October, and a particular focus of disea

The triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio as a predictor of insulin resistance but not of β cell function in a Chinese population with different glucose tolerance status.

BACKGROUND: Triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio was a surrogate marker of IR; however, the relationship of TG/HDL-C with IR might vary by ethnicity. This study aims to investigate whether lipid ratios-TG/HDL-C, cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) ratio, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C/HDL-C)) could be potential clinical markers of insulin resistance (IR) and β cell function and further to explore the optimal cut-offs in a Chinese population with different levels of glucose tolerance. Prospective evaluation of risk of vertebral fractures using quantitative ultrasound measurements and bone mineral density in a population-based sample of postmenopausal women: results of the Basel Osteoporosis Study.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective studies have shown that quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques predict the risk of fracture of the proximal femur with similar standardised risk ratios to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Few studies have investigated these devices for the prediction of vertebral fractures. The Basel Osteoporosis Study (BOS) is a population-based prospective study to assess the performance of QUS devices and DXA in predicting incident vertebral fractures. METHODS: 432 women aged 60-80 years were followed-up for 3 years. Incident vertebral fractures were assessed radiologically.

Comparative Analysis of Electric Field Strength, Magnetic Field Strength and Power Density around the Cell Phone Towers of Varying Characteristics with a Proposed Classification Facilitating Research on Human Population.

The continuous exposure of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cell phone towers may possibly have an influence on public health. Each cell phone tower is unique in terms of number of antennas and its associated attributes; thus, the radiation exposure varies from one tower to another. Hence, a standardized method for quantifying the exposure is beneficial while studying the effects of radiation on the human population residing around the cell phone towers. A mere collection of data or human samples without understanding the cell phone tower differences may show study results such as an

Correlation of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease among the non-obese Chinese population with normal blood lipid levels: a retrospective cohort research.

BACKGROUND: Although nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is commonly seen in metabolic abnormalities patients, NAFLD is also occurred in the non-obese individuals. The ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) is considered as a predictive factor of NAFLD. However, it is still difficult to confirm the correlation of TG/HDL-C ratio with NAFLD among non-obese Chinese people with normal blood lipid levels. In our study, it is aimed to analyze the correlation of TG/HDL-C ratio with NAFLD among non-obese Chinese population without dyslipidemia. METHODS: In the r

Trabecular bone score (TBS) predicts vertebral fractures in Japanese women over 10 years independently of bone density and prevalent vertebral deformity: the Japanese Population-Based Osteoporosis (JPOS) cohort study.

Bone strength is predominantly determined by bone density, but bone microarchitecture also plays an important role. We examined whether trabecular bone score (TBS) predicts the risk of vertebral fractures in a Japanese female cohort. Of 1950 randomly selected women aged 15 to 79 years, we analyzed data from 665 women aged 50 years and older, who completed the baseline study and at least one follow-up survey over 10 years, and who had no conditions affecting bone metabolism. Each survey included spinal imaging by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for vertebral fracture assessment and spine

Relationship between bone mineral density and a 10-year risk for coronary artery disease in a healthy Korean population: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2010.

INTRODUCTION: Bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with atherosclerosis and vascular calcification. If BMD is related independently to the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), BMD could play an important role in CHD risk prediction. We assessed the hypothesis that BMD is related independently to the risk of CHD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The study sample included men and women aged 20-79 years, who did not have myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, or diabetes mellitus. We evaluated the

[Estimation of the survival rate, the relative density and the infection rate of a population of Haemagogus janthinomys Dyar (Diptera, Culicidae) from which strains of yellow fever were isolated in Brazilian Amazon].

The conditions of maintenance of YF virus in brazilian Amazonia are not yet elucidated. Generally, the presence of the virus is attested by human cases of sylvatic origin. During a survey done at the exact place where a man have probably been contaminated, it was possible for the first time in South America, to estimate the mean parity rate of a population of the potential vector Haemagogus janthinomys, from which the YF virus was actually isolated. The survival rate (Ts = 0.96), the biting rate (0.60 mosquitoes/man x hour), and the infection rate (1.71%) were also determinated for the same mo
