We evaluate sexuality in 100 natural menopausal women as pertains to hormones, symptoms related to intercourse, and marital relationship with sexual desire, orgasm and coital frequency. The mean age was 56.8 years while menopausal age was 50.3 years. The postmenopausal syndrome presented 55.0% occurring 1 to 7 years after menopause (mean 3.4 years). The common sexual problems after menopause were loss of libido, orgasmic dysfunction, and dyspareunia. Both sexual desire and activity decreased when compared with premenopausal period. A retrospective review was done on all patients at Tampa General Hospital with a surgically confirmed tuboovarian abscess between March 31, 1983, and April 30, 1988. Patients were grouped according to their menopausal status. Sixty-three were identified. Fifty-four were premenopausal and nine postmenopausal. In order to establish the role of calcitonin (CT) in postmenopausal bone loss, we studied CT metabolism in 25 pre- and postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women presented a highly significant reduction of CT basal levels compared to premenopausal females (p less than 0.01). Seventeen postmenopausal women with pelvic abscesses were cared for at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Women's Hospital during the past eight years. Estrogen therapy for postmenopausal women has received adverse publicity since the mid-1970s because several reports linked estrogens with an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Other studies indicated that the risk of endometrial malignancy is reduced when a progestogen is added to the estrogen replacement. Not all postmenopausal women need estrogen replacement. Postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) is a symptom not to be underestimated. In 13% of our series of 300 cases the bleeding was caused by neoplastic disease of the genital tract. Bleeding in the postmenopause should be evaluated by invasive diagnostic measures; endometrial and/or cervical biopsies and exploration of the uterine cavity by polyp forceps. The screening methods for endometrial cancer are not as effective as those for cervical cancer.

Cytology, colposcopy and histology findings in 121 postmenopausal and 120 premenopausal women referred to the Oxford colposcopy clinic were compared; 88% of postmenopausal and 69% of premenopausal women were referred by their general practitioners.
