Quick Reference on Metabolic Alkalosis.

This article reviews metabolic alkalosis in small animals, a condition characterized by increased blood pH and elevated serum bicarbonate, most commonly resulting from vomiting, diuretic therapy, or hypoalbuminemia. It differentiates between chloride-responsive and chloride-resistant forms and emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing the underlying cause. Management focuses on fluid therapy and correction of electrolyte abnormalities, particularly chloride and potassium. Careful monitoring and restoration of circulatory volume and electrolyte balance are essential to reestablish

[Comparative study of the gastric response in rats with pyloric ligation -- normovolemic rats and rats made hypovolemic by acute hemorrhage -- subjected to hypoxia].

Gastric secretion was studied in two groups of rats in which pyloric ligature was made according to Dai's method. Both groups were put in a hypopressure chamber. One of the groups was normovolemic. The other group was made hypovolemic by acute bleeding. The following parameters were checked in gastire contents: volumen, acid and pepsin secretion, U.P./g. of stomach, chloride, potassium and sodium; in gastric mucosa total U.P. and pepsinogen concentration were measured. In the rats subjected to acute hypovolemia and hypoxia it was found a significant decrease in acid secretion, chloride and pot

Compensatory anion currents in Kv1.3 channel-deficient thymocytes.

Kv1.3 is a voltage-gated potassium channel with roles in human T cell activation/proliferation, cell-mediated cytotoxicity, and volume regulation and is thus a target for therapeutic control of T cell responses. Kv1.3 is also present in some mouse thymocyte subsets and splenocytes, but its role in the mouse is less well understood. We report the generation and characterization of Kv1.3-deficient (Kv1.3-/-) mice. In contrast to wild-type cells, the majority of Kv1.3-/- thymocytes had no detectable voltage-dependent potassium current, although RNA and protein for several potassium channel subuni

Preparation and wittig reactions of organotrifluoroborato phosphonium ylides.

[reaction: see text] Potassium [(trifluoroboratophenyl)methyl]triphenylphosphonium chlorides have been prepared from the corresponding benzyl chlorides and PPh3. In the presence of 1.2 equiv of K2CO3 and various aldehydes, these mixed salts are easily converted to the corresponding unsaturated organotrifluoroborates via the intermediate phosphorus ylides. A protocol for a one-pot transformation has also been developed.

Chloride.

The clinical significance of chloride should place this ion on an equal basis with sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate in the evaluation of body fluid or acid-base status. The rationale for ordering serum chloride determinations includes basically all the indications for requesting the other three electrolytes, particularly when there is concern about a patient's fluid, electrolyte, and/or acid-base status.

Vacuolar ion channels in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha: influence of ion channel inhibitors.

Potassium-permeable slow activating vacuolar channels (SV) and chloride-permeable channels in the vacuole of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha were characterized in respect to calcium dependence, selectivity, and pharmacology. The patch-clamp method was used in the study of ion channel activity in the vacuoles from the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. The whole-vacuole recordings allowed simultaneous observation of two types of currents-predominant slow activated currents recorded at positive voltages and fast activated currents recorded at negative voltages. Single-channel recordings carrie

Changes in renal haemodynamics and electrolyte excretion during acute hyperkalemia in conscious adrenalectomized sheep.

The p-aminohippurate (PAH) clearance, inulin clearance and the excretion of electrolytes by 10 adrenalectomized sheep were measured before, during and after the infusion of 0-43 M-KCl at 2 ml./min for 2 hr. The PAH clearance increased as the plasma potassium concentration increased up to approximately 6-0 m-mole/l. Further increases in plasma potassium were associated with a progressive return of the PAH clearance to or below the pre-infusion levels. At its maximum the PAH clearance was 1-228 +/- 0-032 (S.E. of mean) times the pre-infusion levels. The inulin clearance increased to reach a mazi

Of Diuretics, Transporters, and Mechanisms of Hypertension.

As Director of the Renal Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr Barry Brenner established a molecular physiology laboratory during the 1980s by recruiting the appropriate researchers, with the vision that cloning the complementary DNA of membrane proteins would be a critical step in advancing the field. In the early 1990s, this laboratory identified and cloned several key complementary DNAs, including those for the renal sodium-chloride and sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter, the inwardly rectifying renal outer medullary potassium channel, and the calcium-sensing receptor. In the pr

The minerals of milk.

The salt of milk constitutes a small part of milk (8-9 g.L(-1)); this fraction contains calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium for the main cations and inorganic phosphate, citrate and chloride for the main anions. In milk, these ions are more or less associated between themselves and with proteins. Depending on the type of ion, they are diffusible (cases of sodium, potassium and chloride) or partially associated with casein molecules (cases of calcium, magnesium, phosphate and citrate), to form large colloidal particles called casein micelles. Today, our knowledge and understanding concerni

Chromium incorporated in RNA and DNA.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of Cr(III) (chromium chloride) and Cr(VI) (potassium dichromate) on RNA and DNA-chromium adducts formation in isolated nucleic acids and isolated pig lymphocytes. The incubation of cells with potassium dichromate and chromium chloride at concentrations of 10 and 100 microM results in binding of a 1.2-1.9 fold greater number of chromium atoms to nuclear DNA than to total cellular RNA. The incubation of total cellular RNA and nuclear DNA isolated from lymphocytes with CrCl3 and K2Cr2O7 yielded a binding of 1.1-1.6 fold more of Cr atoms to RNA

Diuretic-induced hypokalaemia and ventricular arrhythmias.

In the past, adverse cardiac effects of potassium depletion in non-digitalised patients and in patients without cardiac disease were considered to be minimal. However, several studies have now demonstrated a significant incidence of ventricular ectopic activity in diuretic-treated patients, particularly in those who become hypokalaemic. Potassium repletion with potassium-sparing diuretics or with potassium chloride supplementation has generally demonstrated a beneficial therapeutic effect in reducing ventricular ectopic activity. However, occasional patients may have persistent ventricular ect…

Acetazolamide-induced muscle weakness in hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

A 46-year-old man with hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) and diabetes mellitus (DM) had worsened muscle weakness after acetazolamide (ACZ) treatment. During the paralytic episode, serum potassium levels were reduced, and serum chloride and insulin levels were increased. The data suggested proximal renal tubular acidosis due to ACZ. We determined arterial-venous concentrations of potassium, insulin and glucose across the forearm. Venous potassium levels were markedly reduced. ACZ is thought to potentiate potassium uptake into muscles. Hyperinsulinemia and DM could contribute to ACZ-induce

THE EFFECT OF INORGANIC SALTS ON THE CHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE BLOOD OF THE DOG AFTER OBSTRUCTION OF THE DUODENUM.

The chemical changes in the blood of dogs treated with various inorganic salts after obstruction of the duodenum are reported. Two dogs treated with sodium chloride survived approximately six times as long as the average untreated animal, one living 22 days, the other 24 days. Ammonium chloride was found to produce an acidosis. The administration of potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride did not prevent the usual rise in non-protein nitrogen and fall in chlorides, and the fatal outcome. Iodides seemingly hasten the toxic process. Sodium bromide appears to have an inhibito…

Kaempferol Promotes Vasorelaxation via KV 2.1 Channel Modulation in the Coronary Arteries of Sheep.

Kaempferol, a flavonol found in various edible and medicinal plants, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties. The vasorelaxant effects of kaempferol were assessed using isolated coronary artery rings pre-contracted with potassium chloride (30 mM). Kaempferol induced a concentration-dependent relaxation in both endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded coronary artery rings pre-contracted with potassium chloride (30 mM), indicating that its vasorelaxant effect is primarily endothelium-independent. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) with L-NAME (100 µM) …

Role of the potassium channels in vasorelaxant effect of asafoetida essential oil.

OBJECTIVE: In a previous work, we showed that asafoetida essential oil (AEO), from oleo-gum resin of Ferula asafoetida L. from the Apiaceae family, has a vasodilatory effect. This effect was both endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent. The present study was designed to determine whether potassium channels and intracellular calcium release contribute to AEO-induced vasodilation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats' thoracic aorta were isolated and denuded. Following induction of contraction by potassium chloride (60 mM), concentration-response curve was plotted by the cumulative addition of…
