Anatomical, morphological and volumetric analysis: a review of 759 cases of testicular maldescent.

Undescended testis is the most frequent disorder of male sexual differentiation affecting 0.8% of all boys by age 1 year. Anatomical and descriptive features of undescended testis lack standardization, and often do not reflect intraoperative findings. We review a large cohort of patients treated for undescended testis and analyze anatomical, morphological and volumetric findings at orchiopexy. Of 759 patients 1 month to 9 years old entered into the study between 1985 and 1990 at our hospital 55% underwent surgery between ages 8 months and 4 years, 15.5% had bilateral undescended testis and 27.

[Anatomo-functional study of non-rheumatic mitral insufficiency with transesophageal echocardiography].

Reconstruction surgery of the mitral valve has become an alternative to mitral replacement in patients with pure mitral regurgitation. Preoperative assessment of the anatomic and functional aspects of the valvular lesion is of the utmost importance in conservative surgery. Transesophageal echocardiography is a new approach to investigating the mitral valve, and our study was undertaken with the purpose of determining its importance in the exploration of mitral regurgitation of non-rheumatic origin. Subjects included were twenty patients with pure and isolated mitral regurgitation (MR): 14 male

Three-dimensional multimodal fractal dynamics integrating spatial metabolism, cytoarchitecture, and perfusion for preoperative prediction of microvascular invasion in colorectal liver metastases.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting microvascular invasion (MVI) preoperatively remains a core challenge for precision surgical decision-making in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). This study developed and validated a three-dimensional multimodal fractal dynamic model (FRAC-3D) that integrates spatial metabolism, cytoarchitecture, and blood perfusion, aiming to non-invasively identify MVI status preoperatively and evaluate patient prognosis. METHODS: Utilizing a retrospective nested cohort design, stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting (sIPTW) was applied to the d

Prediction of bowel resection in acute irreducible inguinal hernia: a retrospective analysis of preoperative computed tomography and clinical risk factors.

PURPOSE: In acute irreducible inguinal hernias, the presence of bowel strangulation is the most critical determinant of clinical urgency and prognosis. Preoperative identification of strangulation can prompt urgent surgical intervention and potentially prevent bowel resection and its associated complications. This study aimed to identify preoperative risk factors associated with bowel resection in these patients. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included patients who underwent emergency surgery for acutely irreducible inguinal hernia at our institution between 2017 and 2024. Pat

Predicting Success: The Crucial Role of Preoperative Data in Refractive Surgery Outcomes.

Refractive surgery, which includes techniques such as Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), has revolutionized ophthalmology by offering advanced solutions for vision correction. However, the choice of the technique to be used in the individual patient is highly dependent on a thorough preoperative evaluation. This retrospective study aims to investigate how preoperative parameters, including corneal thickness, topography, and refraction, affect long-term post-operative clinical outcomes. Through a syst

Sex-specific associations of preoperative serum uric acid levels with mortality and morbidity in non-cardiac surgeries: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The sex-specific association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and postoperative outcomes in elective non-cardiac surgery remains unclear. This study aimed to identify sex-specific SUA thresholds and their impact on short- and long-term outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 295 267 patients (2012-2021) undergoing non-cardiac surgery was conducted. Patients were stratified by preoperative SUA levels: for males (< 4 to ≥ 9 mg/dl) and females (< 3 to ≥ 8 mg/dl), with mid-range levels as reference. Mortality (30-day to overall) and complications were assessed using Cox and

Head movement kinematics are altered during gaze stability exercises in vestibular schwannoma patients.

Gaze stability is the ability of the eyes to fixate a stable point when the head is moving in space. Because gaze stability is impaired in peripheral vestibular loss patients, gaze stabilization exercises are often prescribed to facilitate compensation. However, both the assessment and prescription of these exercises are subjective. Accordingly, here we quantified head motion kinematics in patients with vestibular loss while they performed the standard of care gaze stability exercises, both before and after surgical deafferentation. We also correlate the head kinematic data with standard clini

Left and Right Ventricular Impairment Shortly After Correction of Tetralogy of Fallot.

Surgical repair of Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) is usually performed in the first months of life with low early postoperative mortality. During long-term follow-up, however, both right (RV) and left ventricular (LV) performances may deteriorate. Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and speckle tracking echocardiography (ST) can unmask a diminished RV and LV performance. The objective of the current study was to assess the cardiac performance before and shortly after corrective surgery in ToF patients using conventional, TDI and ST echocardiographic techniques. Thirty-six ToF patients after surgery were i
