Redesigning Pediatric Preventive Care to Advance Child Health.

Pediatric preventive care, beginning at birth and extending through young adulthood to support the health of children, is a cornerstone of pediatric primary care, supporting the physical, developmental, and mental health of children through periodic health supervision visits, also known as "well-child care". Pediatric preventive care visits provide opportunities to monitor growth and development, identify physical and mental health conditions early, deliver disease prevention and health promotion services, offer anticipatory guidance and education to improve child safety and well-being, and pr

Preventive issues and the black elderly: a biopsychosocial perspective.

Of 26 million black Americans, 8 to 10 percent are elderly. Life expectancy for blacks is on the average 5.5 years less than for whites. Black men on the average live only 64.1 years. Preventive services in an elderly population must focus on maintaining physical health, supporting psychological well-being, and sustaining an adequate economic base and a dependable social-service network. High-risk factors in the elderly include being black, being poor, living alone, experiencing major life changes, being recently bereaved, or being recently discharged from a hospital. Important issues involved

"I went in there, had a bit of an issue with those folks": everyday challenges of heterosexual African, Caribbean and black (ACB) men in accessing HIV/AIDS services in London, Ontario.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, heterosexual African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) men's heightened risk of HIV infection has been linked to behavioral characteristics, including practices of hegemonic masculinity that discourage the use of HIV preventive services. However, this framing is bereft of the role of structural factors that may be contributing to new HIV infections. This paper examined the underlying factors limiting access to health services among heterosexual ACB men in London, Ontario Canada. METHODS: A convenient sampling technique was used to recruit thirty-seven (n = 37) self-identified

JCL roundtable: Evolution of preventive cardiology and clinical lipidology.

It's a privilege to discuss preventive cardiology with 3 of the foremost U.S. leaders in this growing subspecialty. Preventive cardiology is the practice of primordial, primary, and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. It employs an integrated team of clinicians committed to preventing all forms of cardiovascular disease, including ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and other conditions. Thus, contemporary preventive cardiology extends management beyond dyslipidemic risk reduction and now commonly includes treatment of hypertension, diabetes and other relate

Behavioral and social sciences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Critical disciplines for public health.

The mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Fifty years ago, CDC's efforts were focused on epidemiologic and laboratory studies of malaria, typhus, and plague. Today, CDC's activities cover a broad range of diseases and conditions, and a broader range of disciplines are required to address these diverse public health problems. The behavioral and social sciences have a critical role to play in helping the public understand risk group characteristics and the frequency,

Optimisation of services to prevent dental caries for school-aged children in China: a discrete choice experiment.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to analyse the preferences of guardians of school-aged children for children's caries prevention services (CPS) and their willingness to pay (WTP) for different levels of attributes. DESIGN: Four key attributes were identified through a literature review and expert consultations: preventive service time, preventive effectiveness, distance (driving time to service institution) and service cost (out-of-pocket for CPS). A D-efficient design was used to create a discrete choice experiment questionnaire, and data were collected via face-to-face interviews

What works in inclusion health: overview of effective interventions for marginalised and excluded populations.

Inclusion health is a service, research, and policy agenda that aims to prevent and redress health and social inequities among the most vulnerable and excluded populations. We did an evidence synthesis of health and social interventions for inclusion health target populations, including people with experiences of homelessness, drug use, imprisonment, and sex work. These populations often have multiple overlapping risk factors and extreme levels of morbidity and mortality. We identified numerous interventions to improve physical and mental health, and substance use; however, evidence is scarce

Improving adolescent health outcomes.

Adolescent morbidity and mortality are more often due to preventable causes and to risky behavioral choices than to "natural" causes, such as cardiovascular disease or cancer. The leading causes of death among adolescents in Western, industrialized nations are unintentional injuries, especially motor vehicle crashes, homicide, and suicide. The physical and cognitive development of adolescents also results in increased risky behavioral choices, and to high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, substance use and misuse, and inadequate nutrition. These lifestyle choices also have repercussions
