Olanzapine in the treatment of behavioral problems associated with autism: an open-label trial in Kuwait.

OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy and safety of olanzapine for the treatment of children with autism associated with disruptive behavior problems. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective open-label trial was conducted on 40 male children (mean age 12.2 +/- 2.2 years, range 7-17 years) meeting Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV criteria for autism. After a washout period from previous medications (2-14 days), patients received olanzapine (5-10 mg/day) for a 13-week treatment period. The primary efficacy measures were Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S)

The cost of future problem drug use associated with young people's behaviors and circumstances.

The UK Drug Strategy includes the objective of preventing young people from becoming drug misusers. It is the use of heroin, crack and heavy use of cocaine that accounts for most of the costs associated with drug use. However, research on the efficiency of young people's interventions at reducing such problem drug use is limited by the expense associated with long-term evaluations. An alternative to undertaking expensive long-term research is to model the probable longer-term problem drug use associated with young people's behavior and circumstances. This paper estimates the economic cost of f

Anger/frustration, task persistence, and conduct problems in childhood: a behavioral genetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individual differences in conduct problems arise in part from proneness to anger/frustration and poor self-regulation of behavior. However, the genetic and environmental etiology of these connections is not known. METHOD: Using a twin design, we examined genetic and environmental covariation underlying the well-documented correlations between anger/frustration, poor attention regulation (i.e., task persistence), and conduct problems in childhood. Participants included 105 pairs of MZ twins and 154 pairs of same-sex DZ twins (4-8 year olds). Independent observers rated child persis

The relationship of comorbid problem behaviors to social skills in persons with profound mental retardation.

Research into behavior problems among individuals with mental retardation has been well developed. However, few studies have addressed the effect of multiple problem behaviors on social skills. In the present study, the authors examined the relationship between two problem behaviors, stereotypy and self-injury, and social skills among individuals with profound mental retardation. A total of 120 participants were divided into four groups based on the presence of stereotypic and self-injurious behavior. Persons with comorbid stereotypy and self-injury evinced more negative nonverbal social skill…

Where is the syndrome? Examining co-occurrence among multiple problem behaviors in adolescence.

The authors examined co-occurrence among a wide range of adolescent problem behaviors: alcohol, smoking, marijuana, hard drugs, sexual activity, major and minor delinquency, direct and indirect aggression, and gambling. Using a large self-report survey of high school students, confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the problem syndrome model proposed by problem behavior theory. A 3-factor model provided better overall fit than did a single problem syndrome factor model. Contingency table analyses were used to examine the co-occurrence of problem behaviors at different levels of involvem…

Callous-unemotional traits, impulsivity, and emotional processing in adolescents with antisocial behavior problems.

Examined the emotional reactivity of adolescents with antisocial behavior problems using a lexical decision paradigm. Evidence from adult forensic samples indicates that psychopathic traits are associated with abnormalities in the processing of emotional stimuli. In an attempt to extend these findings earlier in development, this association was tested in a sample of adolescents (mean age = 16.01; SD = 1.32) referred to a diversion program for delinquent behavior. Emotional processing was assessed by comparing recognition time for emotional words, both positive and negative, to recognition tim

Low birth weight, developmental milestones, and behavioral problems in Chinese children and adolescents.

This study examined the association of low birth weight (LBW) and developmental milestones with behavioral and emotional problems in a general population sample of 3344 Chinese children and adolescents aged 6-16 years in 1997. Parents completed a self-administrated questionnaire including information about birth weight and developmental milestones (i.e. lifting the head up, tooth eruption, speech, walking and bedwetting cessation), and the Child Behavioral Checklist (CBCL). Teachers completed the Teacher's Report Form (TRF) to assess classroom behavior problems. Results indicated that LBW and

Parents' hostility in dyadic marital and triadic family settings and children's behavior problems.

The authors examined the relation between parents' hostility during conflict-focused discussions and child behavior problems. Parents engaged in 3 discussions: a dyadic marital discussion of marital disagreements, a dyadic marital discussion of child-related disagreements, and a triadic family discussion with the child about the child-related disagreements. Eighty-nine 2-parent community families with a child aged 9-13 years participated. A significant 3-way interaction between interparental hostility, parent-to-child hostility, and child sex accounted for variance in children's behavior probl

Expressed emotion, parenting stress, and adjustment in mothers of young children with behavior problems.

Expressed Emotion (EE), a measure of the emotional climate of the family, predicts subsequent adjustment of adults with mental disorder (Leff & Vaughn, 1985). Despite the acknowledged importance of the family in childhood disorders, there have been relatively few studies of expressed emotion with adolescents and school-aged children and virtually none focused on preschoolers. The present study utilized the Five Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) to examine how Expressed Emotion relates concurrently and longitudinally to child problem status in a community sample of 112 preschool-aged children. At pre

Behavior problems and personality aspects of 40 children with velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

Data are collected with the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) as well as with the Teacher Report Form (TRF) of 40 VCFS children between 4 and 18 years of age. Half of the group shows very high problem scores in the "clinical" range. The average T-score of the VCFS children as a group are over 60 (one standard deviation above the mean) for the "total problem score" and the "internalising score". The highest scores with the subscales are found with "withdrawn" and "social problems". But also "thought problems" and "attention problems" score over 60. The VCFS children show more behavior problems a

Physically abused adolescents: behavior problems, functional impairment, and comparison of informants' reports.

OBJECTIVE: This study, like earlier studies that focused on younger abused children, ascertained whether physically abused adolescents exhibited increased internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Relevance to pediatric practice is discussed. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used to compare the behavior of physically abused adolescents and comparison adolescents using self-reports, parent reports, and teacher reports. The level of agreement among raters was also examined. PARTICIPANTS: The subjects were 99 physically abused adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years, who were recru

Mild closed-head injury in children and adolescents: behavior problems and academic outcomes.

The issue of whether mild head injuries (HIs) in children cause behavior problems and poor scholastic performance is controversial. This study included 119 children (range = 8-16 years old) with HI, 114 with other injuries, and 106 with no injury (NI). Behavioral functioning was assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist; academic functioning, with school grades and standardized testing. Higher T scores were found for both injury groups versus NI participants on preinjury behavioral status. All 3 groups' behavioral scores decreased relative to baseline at 1 year. HI and NI groups did not diffe

Connections between reading disability and behavior problems: testing temporal and causal hypotheses.

In this study of children's reading and behavior problem status from Grade 2 to Grade 4 of elementary school, we tested hypotheses concerned with the temporal and causal connections between these two closely associated disorders. Children with both, either, or neither kinds of problems were followed up over 2 years. While reading disability remained stable over time, there was greater variability in behavior problem status. Our data did not support the claim that reading problems lead to the development of behavior problems. Children who were comorbid had the worst outcome at follow-up, sugges

Abuse of benzodiazepines: the problems and the solutions. A report of a Committee of the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc.

Benzodiazepines are medications used to treat many of the most frequent and disturbing symptoms seen in medical practice, including anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, some forms of epilepsy, and other illnesses. The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined benzodiazepines to be "essential drugs" that should be available in all countries for medical purposes. As benzodiazepines were recognized as generally safe and effective drugs, their medical use increased but so did problems of abuse outside medical practice. This report focuses specifically on the nonmedical use, or abuse, of benzodia

Behavioral treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness in an elderly woman with multiple medical problems.

The case is described of a 61-year-old woman who complained of excessive day-time sleepiness, periodic cataplexy, and nocturnal urinary frequency, in the context of several other medical problems. Behavioral treatment consisted of training in progressive muscle relaxation and fluid restriction to facilitate sleep maintenance, and the use of a rubber band which was snapped against the wrist to facilitate daytime arousal. Following this self-management program, improvements were noted in the following dependent measures: sleep attacks at home; sleep attacks while driving; cataplectic episodes; n

The impact of contamination bias when replicating maltreatment effects on child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Contamination, when members of a comparison condition receive or are exposed to a treatment under investigation, can bias the direction, statistical significance, and magnitude of treatment effects. OBJECTIVE: This pre-registered study examined whether contamination biased estimates when replicating child maltreatment effects on two established outcomes, externalizing and internalizing behavior problems. METHODS: A multi-wave, U.S. national probability sample of children and families involved with child protective services (N = 4000; Age = 0-17.5; Sex = 48% Female; Race = 60% Whi

Infant Regulatory Problems and Subsequent Behavioral Difficulties: The Mediating Role of Parenting Stress.

Background/Objectives: Infant regulatory problems (RPs) are at risk of persisting and can contribute to later behavioral difficulties. Parenting stress has been identified as a risk factor associated with child RPs, but its mediating role has rarely been investigated in this context. The aim of the study was (1) to investigate whether RP symptoms were related to subsequent infant RP symptoms/toddler behavioral and emotional problems (BEPs) between two pediatric check-ups in the first 3 years of life and (2) to investigate the potential role of parenting stress as a partial mediator in the asso
