Healthcare Professionals' Experiences with Rehabilitation Practices for Patients with Cognitive Impairment after Stroke in North Norway: A Qualitative Study.

METHODS: A focus group interview with clinicians, coordinators, and leaders involved in stroke survivors' rehabilitation trajectories was conducted. The group consisted of a strategic selection of participants with diverse professional backgrounds from specialist and primary healthcare services. The transcribed material was analyzed thematically using systematic text condensation based on an inductive, interpretive approach. RESULTS: We found that patients with mild and moderate cognitive impairment after stroke were characterized as a neglected group in rehabilitation services and that negle

Developing and validating a tool for assessing the confidence in the competence of midwifery tutors in India on WHO core competency domains.

Negligible quantitative research evidence exists on standardisation and psychometric validation of questionnaires that measure midwifery educators' confidence in their competence. This study developed a self-assessment of confidence in competence questionnaire in India based on the WHO Midwifery Educator Core Competencies (2014) with an aim to develop and validate a self-assessment tool measuring midwifery tutors' confidence in competence in imparting quality midwifery education. The questionnaire was developed as part of a multi-centre study to identify confident midwifery tutors for further

Welcome to cultural competency: surgery's efforts to acknowledge diversity in residency training.

BACKGROUND: Although cultural competency is not a new concept in healthcare, it has only recently been formally embraced as important in the field of surgery. All physicians, including and especially surgeons, must acknowledge the potential influence of culture in order to provide effective and equitable care for patients of all backgrounds. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recognizes cultural competency as a component of "patient care," "professionalism," and "interpersonal and communication skills." METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using

"I've found it's very meaningful work": Perspectives of physiotherapists providing palliative care in Ontario.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe insights from interviews about the experience of physiotherapists providing palliative care in Ontario and their perceptions of the role and value of physiotherapists' involvement in palliative care. Simulated parents: developing paediatric trainees' skills in giving bad news.

AIM: In curriculum documents for medicine in undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing professional development, there is now a focus on communication skills. The challenges are to place communication skills in the crowded curriculum and then to construct and sustain a programme that uses an evidence-based approach to the teaching and learning of communication skills. For 6 years, we have conducted a programme that involves simulated parents supporting junior medical staff to refine their skills in communication, particularly in giving parents bad news. The aim of our study was to obtain a b

Developing competency evaluation indicators for neurosurgical specialist nurses: a Delphi-AHP study.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical nursing is a high-demand specialized field requiring comprehensive professional competency. In 2023 when this study commenced, no standardized, validated competency evaluation framework existed for Chinese neurosurgical specialist nurses, and no official certification program was available. Although the Chinese Nursing Association launched neurosurgical specialist nurse certification in 2025, a structured, evidence-based assessment tool remains lacking, leaving a critical gap in clinical nursing talent training and management. This study aimed to construct competency

Occupational therapists' competencies utilised in Danish job centres.

BACKGROUND: Twenty-nine out of 94 Danish job centres employ occupational therapists (OTs) and numbers are increasing. Occupational therapy (OT) vocational rehabilitations are diverse, and a more specific description of OT practice within this field is lacking. AIMS: To explore how OTs employed at Danish job centres describe their own competencies and what they perceive that their colleagues from other professions request from them. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Firstly, working diaries were obtained from 16 OTs working in job centres and analysed using content analysis. Secondly, semi-structured int

Past speech therapy experiences of individuals exploring a new stuttering treatment.

Perceptions of benefits of speech therapy, success of therapy across clinical settings, reasons for returning to therapy, client-clinician relationships, and clinicians' competency were assessed in 57 participants (47 men, 10 women; M age = 34 yr.) trying a new therapy. A majority of respondents had cumulatively five or more years in therapy and at least two stuttering therapies. Respondents rated university or hospital settings as more successful than services in public schools. 70% of the respondents noted difficulty communicating basic needs; they blamed themselves for inability to maintain

Competency-Based Education as a Catalyst for Inclusion: Practical Pathways for Supporting Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Nurse educators have a professional and ethical responsibility to revise curricula to be inclusive and competency-based. PROBLEM: Inclusive education benefits all students, including neurodivergent and disabled learners, and reduces reliance on individually awarded accommodations. Many nurse educators lack skills for inclusive instruction. APPROACH: This article presents a practical framework that integrates Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, and Competency-Based Education. Grounded in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, this approac

Sometimes you can't make it on your own: the impact of a professionalism curriculum on the attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors of an academic plastic surgery practice.

INTRODUCTION: Professionalism is now recognized as a core competency for graduate medical education and maintenance of certification. However, few models exist in plastic surgery that define, teach, and assess professionalism as a competency. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a professionalism curriculum in an academic plastic surgery practice. METHODS: We created and conducted a 6-wk, 12-h course for health care professionals in plastic surgery (faculty, residents, nurses, medical students). Teaching methods included didactic lectures, journal club, small group

Professionals' attitudes towards sex between institutionalized patients.

Sexual activity among institutionalized patients has always been an issue of concern to institutions. Despite this fact, there has been little consensus about how patient sexuality should be dealt with. Nor have clinical insights with respect to patient sexuality been empirically tested. Given the diversity of beliefs and policies in this area, guidelines concerning sexual activity among hospitalized mental patients seem to be badly needed. We examined the following six factors that we thought might influence staff decisions: (1) the competence of a patient to engage in sexual activity, (2) th

Authentic assessment in forensic science programmes: A UK-based survey of practitioners.

Authentic assessment is becoming increasingly common in higher education, and it can be achieved in forensic science programmes by asking students to complete realistic workplace tasks. We argue that preparing students for the forensic science workplace also means preparing them for the ongoing training and assessment they will experience. Using an online questionnaire of 60 practitioners, we surveyed the assessment methods that are used in forensic science workplaces to assess theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Just over half of the participants (52 %) were from the UK. The most comm

Preventive measures of canine leishmaniosis in Italy: Attitudes of veterinarians based on a questionnaire.

There are several topical ectoparasiticides, drugs, supplements and vaccines that protect dogs against sand fly bites and/or reduce the risk of Leishmania infantum infection. This large variety of products and the absence of comparative studies mean that veterinarians are often faced with uncertainty. The aim of the study was to characterise the attitudes of veterinarians towards leishmaniosis prevention in client-owned dogs in Italy. A web-based questionnaire was prepared with 28 questions covering the working environment of veterinarians, advice given to owners regarding topical ectoparasiti
