[Thumb/big-toe localizing test: examination for deficit of proprioception through the posterior column-medial lemniscal system].

"Thumb localizing test" (TLT) and "big-toe localizing test" (BLT) are bedside examinations to detect abnormalities in proprioceptive afferent pathways from the limbs. In TLT, the patient is asked to close the eyes, one upper limb of the patient is placed in a fixed position by the examiner, and the patient is asked to localize the thumb of the fixed upper limb with the thumb and index finger of the other upper limb. In BLT, the patient is asked to close the eyes, a lower limb is passively immobilized by the examiner, and the patient is asked to locate the big toe with either index finger. Norm

[Can knee joint proprioception by reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament be restored? A prospective longitudinal study].

Knee proprioception was assessed in 20 healthy volunteers, 10 patients with acute anterior instability and in 20 patients with chronic anterior instability preoperatively as well as after 3 and 6 months postoperatively. To determine proprioception, an angle reproduction test was performed. There were no differences between the right and the left knee joint or between men and women. Best proprioception was measured near full extension. The acute trauma causes massive damage of the proprioception, which could be improved significantly by rehabilitation. However, rehabilitation could not restore …

Evaluation of a proprioception pathway in patients with stable and unstable shoulders with somatosensory cortical evoked potentials.

Histologic studies have documented the presence of mechanoreceptors in the glenohumeral ligaments, capsule, and labrum; however, direct evidence of an intact afferent electrical pathway originating in structures in the shoulder is lacking. Because somatosensory cortical evoked potentials are transmitted by way of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and carry proprioceptive information, this technique can be easily applied to evaluate the potential proprioceptive function of various intraarticular structures for shoulder stability. Patients have somatosensory cortical evoked potentials monito

Vestibular and proprioceptive contributions to trunk stabilization differ across postural tasks and walking speeds.

Stabilizing upright posture of the trunk in humans relies on vestibular and proprioceptive afference. Previous studies found that the feedback responses to sensory afference vary between postures and tasks. We investigated whether and how vestibular and proprioceptive afference contribute to trunk stabilization during different postural tasks, and during walking at different speeds. Twelve healthy adults performed tasks in a random order - sitting, standing on the right foot or both feet, and treadmill walking at five speeds (0.8, 2.0, 3.2, 4.3 and 5.5 km h-1) - while exposed to unilateral mus

Exercise-induced muscle soreness impairs the efficiency of proprioceptive integration and body representation processing.

Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), occurring 24-72 h postexercise, is characterized by pain and decreased force production. Recent evidence suggests DOMS may result from damage to muscle spindle afferents rather than to muscle fibers. We hypothesized that this type of disruption impairs the central integration of proprioceptive inputs, reducing the efficiency of body-related motor imagery. In a controlled study, young sports science students were assigned to a DOMS group (n = 47)-induced by whole body eccentric exercises-or a control group (n = 47). All participants then performed mental ro

Effect of Scapular and Pelvic Patterns of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation on Functional Mobility in Stroke Survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability worldwide, resulting in significant motor, sensory, and cognitive impairments that hinder independence and quality of life. Among the most debilitating consequences are impaired balance and an increased risk of falls, which contribute to reduced participation in daily activities, diminished self-confidence, and greater dependency. Hemiplegic gait patterns, postural instability, and impaired weight shifting are common, limiting functional recovery. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), a rehabilitation technique aimed at enh

Disrupted proprioceptive timing estimates contribute to upper limb motor impairment in chronic stroke.

In this task, the participants' (p < 0.01) and variability (p < 0.01) than controls, indicating impaired proprioceptive timing in a task that did not require active motor output from the tested limb. Larger proprioceptive timing errors were strongly correlated with poor performance on VGR (ρ > 0.57, p < 0.01) and APM in individuals with stroke (ρ > 0.49, p < 0.01). These results suggest that the estimation of timing for dynamic sensory signals is disrupted in individuals with stroke and likely contributes to dysfunction in coordinated movement and static estimations of limb position.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and/or Electrical Stimulation in Patients with Peripheral Facial Paralysis: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial paralysis (PFP) affects the facial nerve, the seventh cranial nerve. It has an incidence rate of 20-30 cases per 100,000 habitants. The diagnosis is clinical, though imaging tests may be required in some cases. The treatment protocol includes medication, physiotherapy, and, in certain cases, surgery. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques and electrical stimulation have been shown to be significant for recovery. Although PFP has a high recovery rate, up to 40% of patients may experience permanent sequelae. OBJECTIVE: to assess the efficacy of

Acute Effects of Complex Hand Proprioceptive Task on Low-Frequency Hand Rest Tremor.

Resting hand tremor is a low-frequency, involuntary oscillation influenced by mechanical and neural factors, often manifesting as inter-limb asymmetry. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether a single complex hand proprioceptive task can acutely modulate tremor in healthy young adults and whether it can induce asymmetry between limbs. Fifty participants (age: 25.0 ± 2.5 years) completed a 40-min proprioceptive task (anteroposterior, mediolateral, clockwise, and counterclockwise), with bilateral resting tremor recorded via triaxial accelerometry before and immediately after

Functional specialization of the human posterior parietal cortex in visually and proprioceptively driven reaching corrections.

While online adjustments during reaching are essential for interacting with our dynamic environment, the specialized contributions of subregions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the distinct roles of human medial PPC areas V6A (hV6A) and PEc (hPEc) in mediating online reaching corrections elicited by visual and proprioceptive perturbations. Here we deliver online repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) during the early stages of reaching corrections triggered by an unexpected shift of the visual target or by the application of an

Proprioceptive test for the temporomandibular joint: An intra- and inter-rater reliability study with healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are challenging to manage due to their multifactorial nature. As with other joints, the function of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is influenced by proprioception, making it an essential factor in TMD management. However, previous studies on the joint position error (JPE) in TMD patients lacked a proper diagnosis and reliability assessment. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to develop a reliable JPE test in healthy adults as a foundation for future evaluation in TMD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two examiners conducted the JPE assess…

μ-band desynchronization in the contralateral central and central-parietal areas predicts proprioceptive acuity.

INTRODUCTION: Position sense, which belongs to the sensory stream called proprioception, is pivotal for proper movement execution. Its comprehensive understanding is needed to fill existing knowledge gaps in human physiology, motor control, neurorehabilitation, and prosthetics. Although numerous studies have focused on different aspects of proprioception in humans, what has not been fully investigated so far are the neural correlates of proprioceptive acuity at the joints. METHODS: Here, we implemented a robot-based position sense test to elucidate the correlation between patterns of neural a…

Physiotherapeutic Protocol Focusing Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Approach in Viral Encephalitis: A Case Report.

Encephalitis is an inflammatory condition of the brain parenchyma accompanied by symptoms indicative of brain dysfunction. A headache, fever, vomiting, altered state of consciousness, and, in some cases, seizures characterize varicella-zoster virus (VZV) encephalitis. Rehabilitation after the manifestation of neurological symptoms must be tailored, and a well-coordinated intervention must be formulated. The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) technique is a widespread rehabilitation approach used to restore motor function. A 29-year-old male is presented in this case report with VZ

Facilitation of Hand Proprioceptive Processing in Paraplegic Individuals with Long-Term Wheelchair Sports Training.

Previous studies have revealed drastic changes in motor processing in individuals with congenital or acquired limb deficiencies and dysfunction. However, little is known about whether their brains also exhibit characteristic proprioceptive processing. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined the brain activity characteristics of four individuals with congenital or acquired paraplegia (paraplegic group) who underwent long-term wheelchair sports training, when they passively experienced a right-hand movement (passive task) and when they actively performed a right-hand motor task

Nociception induces a differential presynaptic modulation of the synaptic efficacy of nociceptive and proprioceptive joint afferents.

A previous study has indicated that during the state of central sensitization induced by the intradermic injection of capsaicin, there is a gradual facilitation of the dorsal horn neuronal responses produced by stimulation of the high-threshold articular afferents that is counteracted by a concurrent increase of descending inhibitory actions. Since these changes occurred without significantly affecting the responses produced by stimulation of the low-threshold articular afferents, it was suggested that the capsaicin-induced descending inhibition included a preferential presynaptic modulation o
