Self-perception in Children Aged 3 to 7 Years With Amblyopia and Its Association With Deficits in Vision and Fine Motor Skills.

IMPORTANCE: Deficits in fine motor skills and slow reading speed have been reported in school-aged children and adults with amblyopia. These deficits were correlated with lower self-perception of athletic and cognitive competence. Although perceived competence and social acceptance are key determinants of developing self-perception in young children, the association of amblyopia with self-perception and the association of altered self-perception with fine motor skills to date have not been reported for young children aged 3 to 7 years. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether amblyopia is associate

Disability, social functioning and school inclusion among older children and adolescents living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of children with HIV are surviving to adolescence and encountering multiple clinical and social consequences of long-standing HIV infection. We aimed to investigate the association between HIV and disability, social functioning and school inclusion among 6- to 16-year-olds in Zimbabwe. METHODS: HIV-infected children receiving antiretroviral therapy from a public-sector HIV clinic and HIV-uninfected children attending primary care clinics in the same catchment area were recruited. Standardised questionnaires were used to collect socio-demographic, social functioni

The relation between schizotypy and early attention to rejecting interactions: The influence of neuroticism.

OBJECTIVES: Schizotypy relates to rejection sensitivity (anxiety reflecting an expectancy of social exclusion) and neuroticism (excessive evaluation of negative emotions). Positive schizotypy (e.g., perceptual aberrations and odd beliefs) and negative schizotypy (e.g., social and physical anhedonia) could relate to altered attention to rejection because of neuroticism. METHODS: Forty-one healthy individuals were assessed on positive and negative schizotypy and neuroticism, and event-related potentials during rejecting, accepting and neutral scenes. Participants were categorised into high, mod

Prevalence, social acceptance, and awareness of waterpipe smoking among dental university students: a cross sectional survey conducted in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Waterpipe tobacco smoking is increasing in popularity especially among young adults. This spread could be related to limited knowledge of the negative health effects of waterpipe smoking. In this study, prevalence, social acceptance, and awareness of waterpipe smoking were examined among dental university students. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey study, where a self-administered questionnaire was completed by a sample of dental university students in Jordan. RESULTS: Students (n=547) reported current tobacco use of 54.3% for males versus 11.1% for females (P<0.005). Amo

A common first-order time-to-contact based control of hand-closure initiation in catching and grasping.

To catch or grasp an object, the initiation of hand closure has to be coordinated with the relative movement between hand and object. In search of a common control of the initiation of hand closure for both tasks (van de Kamp, Bongers, & Zaal, 2010), the authors studied two tasks, catching while keeping the hand stationary and prehension. They showed that the initiation of hand closure could well be based on first-order time-to-contact in the prehension task but not in the catching task studied. The current study tested if the fact that the hand-object gap was closed at a linear rate made that

The thin line between reality and imagination: attachment orientations and the effects of relationship threats on sexual fantasies.

The authors examined the effects of relationship threats on sexual fantasies. In two studies, participants described a sexual fantasy following an imagination task and reported their attachment orientations. In Study 1, participants imagined relationship or nonrelationship threat scenes. Results indicated that relationship threat led to fantasies that involved interpersonal distance and hostility themes. Furthermore, following relational threat, women and more anxiously attached individuals were most likely to use relationship-maintaining strategies in their fantasies. More anxiously attached

Work-Related Stress and Psychological Distress among Law Enforcement Officers: The Carolina Blue Project.

Law enforcement is a stressful occupation that places significant psychological demands on those serving in this role. However, little is known about the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among law enforcement officers (LEOs) in North Carolina (NC). This cross-sectional study examined the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among 283 LEOs in NC. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Operational Police Stress Questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist were used to assess burnout,

Establishing the "Fit" between the Patient and the Therapy: The Role of Patient Gender in Selecting Psychological Therapy for Distressing Voices.

The experience of hearing distressing voices has recently attracted much attention in the literature on psychological therapies. A new "wave" of therapies is considering voice hearing experiences within a relational framework. However, such therapies may have limited impact if they do not precisely target key psychological variables within the voice hearing experience and/or ensure there is a "fit" between the profile of the hearer and the therapy (the so-called "What works for whom" debate). Gender is one aspect of both the voice and the hearer (and the interaction between the two) that may b

Supervisory psychological support and graduate student creativity: a serial mediation model.

Extant research has examined the link between supervisory support and graduate student creativity (PGC), yet the underlying psychological and social mechanisms remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study, grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), examined a serial mediation model in which supervisory psychological support is positively associated with PGC through a sequential two-stage statistical pathway: first via its association with the quality of leader-member exchange (LMX), and subsequently via a positive team innovation climate (TIC). We surveyed 363 full-time graduate students

Prolonged lockdown: psychological risk factors among children and their mental health.

The most talked phenomenon and sui generis of the modern time, the coronavirus diseases-2019 impacted individuals in a variety of ways. Older adults had a higher risk of vulnerability, while there were negative ramifications among children due to indirect impact. The preventive measures, including closing down of schools, malls and playgrounds as well as practising social distancing served as a shield against the hazard of outbreak. On the contrary, these strategies inculcated fear, anxiety, ambiguous communication and manifestation of externalizing behaviours in children. Children living in d

Enhancing heatstroke safety for construction workers: Assessing visibility and contrast of thermochromic pigment.

BackgroundHeat-related illness is a significant occupational hazard requiring effective prevention. The World Health Organization emphasizes that reducing a worker's ability to perform tasks due to extreme heat or cold is a "health effect" of climate conditions. This study proposes a novel safety management approach in construction to prevent heatstroke among workers using thermochromic fibers that change color in response to body temperature, enabling the visual detection of rising heat levels.ObjectiveThis study evaluated the visibility and contrast of blue and pink (red spectrum) fibers at

Community psychological and behavioral responses through the first wave of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the community psychological and behavioral responses to influenza pandemics. METHODS: Using random digit dialing, we sampled 12,965 Hong Kong residents in 13 cross-sectional telephone surveys between April and November 2009, covering the entire first wave of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic. We examined trends in anxiety, risk perception, knowledge on modes of transmission, and preventive behaviors. RESULTS: Respondents reported low anxiety levels throughout the epidemic. Perceived susceptibility to infection and perceived severity of H1N1 were initially

Measuring associations among British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic: Testing a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA).

Social identification and group norms have been identified as key social psychological determinants of engagement in protective public health behaviours, such as social distancing, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the research tests the utility of a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)-which proposes reciprocal, interactive associations among self-group, group-behaviour and self-behaviour concepts-for the measurement of British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour at t

Turning Down, Tuning In: How Mindfulness Shapes Sexual Rejection, Relationship Satisfaction, and Sexual Satisfaction.

Sexual rejection is a challenging interpersonal experience in intimate relationships. The present research examined how mindfulness relates to the use of different sexual rejection strategies across three studies with complementary methodologies: cross-sectional (Study 1), experimental (Study 2) and longitudinal (Study 3). In Study 1 (N = 383; 49.87% women and 48.83% men; Mage = 39.25, SD = 11.97), greater trait mindfulness was associated with fewer hostile and deflecting, and more assertive, rejection strategies. Parallel mediation analyses revealed that fewer hostile and deflecting rejection

Influence of Living Alone or with a Spouse Only on the Short-Term Prognosis in Patients after an Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Background-This study aimed to explore whether living alone or with a spouse only affects the short-term prognosis of acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods-We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke from April 2014 to February 2019 in Japan. The primary outcome was defined as worsening by at least one grade on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). The secondary outcome was set as the degree of worsening on the mRS. The outcomes were compared between three groups of patients: (1) those living alone (ALONE), (2) those living with their spouse onl

Improving emotion regulation of social exclusion in depression-prone individuals: a tDCS study targeting right VLPFC.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence has indicated that right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (RVLPFC) is critical in down-regulating emotional responses to social exclusion, and that depression is accompanied by social emotional dysregulation associated with reduced lateral prefrontal engagement. This study used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to examine whether stimulating RVLPFC could improve emotional down-regulation of social exclusion in individuals with high depressive mood (DM). METHODS: A total of 96 high and 94 low DM individuals received active or sham tDCS while view

Friends With Health Benefits: The Long-Term Benefits of Early Peer Social Integration for Blood Pressure and Obesity in Midlife.

In adults, greater social integration is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. Social integration earlier in life may be similarly associated with cardiovascular risk. Using a longitudinal sample of 267 Black and White men, we examined whether greater social integration with peers during childhood and adolescence, assessed by parent report, prospectively predicts lower blood pressure and body mass index two decades later in adulthood and whether these effects differ by race, given well-documented racial disparities in hypertension. Boys who were report

Frontal-Brainstem Pathways Mediating Placebo Effects on Social Rejection.

Placebo treatments can strongly affect clinical outcomes, but research on how they shape other life experiences and emotional well-being is in its infancy. We used fMRI in humans to examine placebo effects on a particularly impactful life experience, social pain elicited by a recent romantic rejection. We compared these effects with placebo effects on physical (heat) pain, which are thought to depend on pathways connecting prefrontal cortex and periaqueductal gray (PAG). Placebo treatment, compared with control, reduced both social and physical pain, and increased activity in the dorsolateral
