Notched noise reveals differential improvement in the neural representation of the sound envelope.

Precise temporal coding in auditory nerve fibers is crucial for sound localization and listening in noise. However, at higher sound levels, typical of everyday listening situations, temporal coding to the stimulus envelope is poor in fibers of the on-frequency channel, i.e., those tuned to the carrier stimulus. We predict that changes in cochlear gain improve temporal coding of the stimulus envelope differentially across frequency channels. Both auditory nerve fiber recordings (in Mongolian gerbils of either sex) and human psychophysics confirm that weak temporal coding at higher levels is imp…

On memories, neural ensembles and mental flexibility.

Memories are assumed to be represented by groups of co-activated neurons, called neural ensembles. Describing ensembles is a challenge: comp … parsimonious connectivity for cues on the horizontal axis, which may explain the oblique effect in psychophysics. Our approach paves the way for biophysical models with learned parameters that can guide future Brain Computer Interface development.

Phase-dependent word perception emerges from region-specific sensitivity to the statistics of language.

Neural oscillations reflect fluctuations in excitability, which biases the percept of ambiguous sensory input. Why this bias occurs is still … e lower activation thresholds. Here, we show such a frequency bias in spoken word recognition using psychophysics, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and computational modelling. With MEG, we found a double dissociation, where the phase of oscillations in the superior temporal gyrus and medial temporal gyrus biased word-identification behavior based on phoneme and l …

Moderate Alcohol Intake Changes Visual Perception by Enhancing V1 Inhibitory Surround Interactions.

Moderate alcohol consumption is considered to enhance the cortical GABA-ergic inhibitory system and it also variously affects visual percept … l orientation processing but a presence of global attentional modulation. Thus, our results provide psychophysics evidence that alcohol changed V1 processing, which affects visual perception of contextual stimuli.

Right orbitofrontal cortex mediates conscious olfactory perception.

Understanding how the human brain translates sensory impressions into conscious percepts is a key challenge of neuroscience research. Work in this area has overwhelmingly centered on the conscious experience of vision at the exclusion of the other senses--in particular, smell. We hypothesized that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a central substrate for olfactory conscious experience because of its privileged physiological role in odor processing. Combining functional magnetic resonance imaging, peripheral autonomic recordings, and olfactory psychophysics, we studied a case of complete anosmi…

Pushing and pulling in relation to musculoskeletal disorders: a review of risk factors.

The objective was to review the literature on risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders related to pushing and pulling. The risk factors have been described and evaluated from four perspectives: epidemiology, psychophysics, physiology, and biomechanics. Epidemiological studies have shown, based on cross-sectional data, that pushing and pulling is associated with low back pain. Evidence with respect to complaints of other parts of the musculoskeletal system is lacking. Risk factors have been found to influence the maximum (acceptable) push or pull forces as well as the physiological and mechan…

Visual processing in migraine.

Background Migraine is a common neurological condition that often involves differences in visual processing. These sensory processing differences provide important information about the underlying causes of the condition, and for the development of treatments. Review of psychophysical literature Psychophysical experiments have shown consistent impairments in contrast sensitivity, orientation acuity, and the perception of global form and motion. They have also established that the addition of task-irrelevant visual noise has a greater effect, and that surround suppression, masking and adaptatio

Bimodal expressivity in dominant retinitis pigmentosa genetically linked to chromosome 19q.

A clinical, psychophysical, and electrophysiologic study was undertaken of two autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa pedigrees with a genetic mutation assigned to chromosome 19q by linkage analysis. Members with the abnormal haplotype were either symptomatic with adolescent onset nyctalopia, restricted visual fields, and non-detectable electroretinographic responses by 30 years of age, or asymptomatic with normal fundus appearance and minimal or no psychophysical or electroretinographic abnormalities. There was no correlation in the severity in parents and their offspring. Pedigree analysis

Representing spatial information for limb movement: role of area 5 in the monkey.

How is spatial information for limb movement encoded in the brain? Computational and psychophysical studies suggest that beginning hand position, via-points, and target are specified relative to the body to afford a comparison between the sensory (e.g., kinesthetic) reafferences and the commands that generate limb movement. Here we propose that the superior parietal lobule (Brodmann area 5) might represent a substrate for a body-centered positional code. Monkeys made arm movements in different parts of 3D space in a reaction-time task. We found that the activity of area 5 neurons can be relate

Exploring the association of gender role expectations of pain and measures of pain sensitization in people with knee osteoarthritis: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: First, we explored the association between Gender Role Expectations of Pain (GREP), and psychophysical measures of sensitization in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Second, we explored whether the association differed by level of GREP items (high vs low scores). DESIGN: We conducted secondary analyses of a cohort study. Those who were (i) age of ≥40, English or French speaking, ii) diagnosed with knee OA using American College of Rheumatology criteria and iii) consulting with an orthopedic surgeon were included. GREP items pertaining to pain sensitivity and pain endurance of

Somatic, Emotional and Behavioral Symptomatology in Children during COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Children's and Parents' Alexithymia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply affected the psychophysical wellbeing of children worldwide. Alexithymia, a personality trait involving difficulties in identifying and expressing feelings represents a vulnerability factor for stress-related disorders. Under pandemic stress exposure, we aimed to investigate the role of parents' and children's alexithymia in the psychophysical symptomatology shown by children and to evaluate possible differences according to age, gender and history of COVID-19 infections. The perception of parents and children about the impact of the pandemic on children's emot

Photopic temporal processing in retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: The relation between early changes in the photopic flicker electroretinogram (ERG) and photopic psychophysical changes in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is poorly understood. Here, abnormalities in foveal and extrafoveal temporal contrast sensitivity functions (TCSFs) were studied in a group of carefully selected patients with RP who had relatively preserved macular function. The psychophysical results were compared with changes in the timing of the multifocal ERG. METHODS: Subjects were patients with RP who had acuity > or =20/32 and no visual field defects within 6 degrees from the fove

Opponent-color detection threshold asymmetries may result from reduction of ganglion cell subpopulations.

Thresholds for psychophysically opposite stimuli--light and dark, or equiluminous red and green, or equiluminous blue and yellow--are usually nearly equal. This color threshold symmetry is sometimes violated in subjects who have optic nerve hypoplasia, a congenital loss of retinal ganglion cells. We describe a subject who has optic nerve hypoplasia, who exhibits large red-green and blue-yellow detection threshold asymmetries for equiluminous spots. Temporal and spatial integration for equiluminous red and green test spots also differed from normal; static perimetric thresholds for equiluminous

Utility of the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements in Age-Related Olfactory Dysfunction.

BackgroundOlfactory dysfunction (OD) is both under-recognized and underdiagnosed in aging adults. Prior studies in chronic rhinosinusitis have demonstrated a correlation between the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements (QOD-NS) and psychophysical olfactory testing, indicating potential utility for screening in this group. This study examined the correlation between QOD-NS scores, psychophysical function, and olfactory-associated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in a novel, aging population. Additionally, we examined the potential utility of the QOD-NS as a screenin

Invalid Trials Are Not Required to Observe Neural Correlates of Object-based Attention in Retinotopic Visual Cortex.

A central debated question in the study of object-based attention (OBA) is whether attention to the object-mediated deployment of attention is obligatory and automatic [Chen, Z., & Cave, K. R. Reinstating object-based attention under positional certainty: The importance of subjective parsing. Perception & Psychophysics, 68, 992-1003, 2006] or whether the pattern of results is driven by other non-obligatory factors, such as prioritization of invalid target locations [Shomstein, S., & Yantis, S.
