Stressful life events, depression, and the moderating role of psychophysiological reactivity in patients with pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: The development of depressive symptoms in youth with IBD is a concerning disease complication, as higher levels of depressive symptoms have been associated with poorer quality of life and lower medication adherence. Previous research has examined the association between disease activity and depression, but few studies have examined individual differences in experience of stressful life events in relation to depressive symptoms. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relation between stressful life events and depression within pediatric IBD and to determine whether indivi

Personality Differences of Brain Networks in Placebo Analgesia and Nocebo Hyperalgesia: A Psychophysiological Interaction (PPI) Approach in fMRI.

It is generally believed that the placebo response can elicit an analgesic effect, whilst the nocebo response can elicit a hyperalgesia effect in pain. Placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia effects are increasing concerns for researchers. Growing evidence suggests personality differences have an impact on both placebo and nocebo effects. However, previous studies have not reached a unified conclusion. We designed this study to explore the personality differences of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals in placebo response and nocebo response by using psychophysiological inte

Distress tolerance across self-report, behavioral and psychophysiological domains in women with eating disorders, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The tendency to engage in impulsive behaviors when distressed is linked to disordered eating. The current study comprehensively examines emotional responses to a distress tolerance task by utilizing self-report, psychophysiological measures (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA], skin conductance responses [SCRs] and tonic skin conductance levels [SCLs]), and behavioral measures (i.e., termination of task, latency to quit task). METHODS: 26 healthy controls (HCs) and a sample of treatment-seeking women with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and Anorexia

CPS-referred mothers' psychophysiological responses to own versus other child predict sensitivity to child distress.

Maltreating mothers often struggle to respond sensitively to their children's distress. Examining psychophysiological processing of own child cues may offer insight into neurobiological mechanisms that promote sensitive parenting among high-risk mothers. The current study used event-related potential (ERP) methodology to examine associations between mothers' neural responses to their own child versus other children and observed sensitivity to distress. Participants included 73 mothers: 42 with histories of child protective services (CPS) involvement and 31 low-risk comparison mothers. Maternal

Exploration of changes in the brain response to sleep-related pictures after cognitive-behavioral therapy for psychophysiological insomnia.

Psychophysiological insomnia (PI) includes arousal to sleep-related stimuli (SS), which can be treated by cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). The present study was an exploratory, prospective intervention study that aimed to explore brain response to visual SS in PI before and after CBT-I. Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal differences in response to SS and neutral stimuli (NS) were compared between 14 drug-free PI patients and 18 good sleepers (GS) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). BOLD changes after CBT-I in patients were also examined. PI patients sh

Trauma-related dissociation: Psychological features and psychophysiological responses to script-driven imagery in borderline personality disorder.

Defense reactions to threatening situations are vital adaptations to stress that protect organisms from injury and ensure survival. We retrospectively investigated the role of peritraumatic dissociation (PD) in the occurrence of severe psychopathology and dissociative patterns of reactions in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We recruited 28 patients with a clinical diagnosis of BPD and 15 healthy controls. The BPD group was divided according to the level of PD (low vs. high): BPD and PD (n = 15) and BPD only (n = 13). We conducted an extensive investigation of history of trauma, clinical

Detrimental psychophysiological effects of early maternal deprivation in adolescent and adult rodents: altered responses to cannabinoid exposure.

Environmental rearing conditions during the neonatal period are critical for the establishment of neurobiological factors controlling behavior and stress responsiveness. Early maternal deprivation (MD), consisting of a single 24-h maternal deprivation episode during early neonatal life, has been proposed as an animal model for certain psychopathologies including anxiety, depression and schizophrenic-related disorders. Despite first onset of mental disorders usually occur during adolescence, characterization of MD has been mostly developed in adult animals. We review here a series of experiment

[Studies on the occupational maladjustment syndrome (Part 2). In reference to relationship between psychophysiological characters and clinical features].

In a previous report (Natsume et al., Jpn. J. Ind. Health, Vol. 24) on the occupational maladjustment syndrome (O.M.A.S.), on the basis of clinical data, we classified patients with O.M.A.S. into 5 subcategories; core, drop-out, transient reaction, special job maladjustment and other. The core and drop-out types are typical of O.M.A.S. In order to test our hypothesis regarding the clinical and psychophysiological character of patients with O.M.A.S., 39 subjects (25 core type and 14 drop-out type) were studied by polygraphic techniques such as EEG, EMG of facial muscles and electrooculogram, an

Using psychophysiological metrics for understanding drivers' mental workload and visual attention when overtaking automated truck platoons.

The automated truck platoon is one of the most promising connected autonomous vehicle technologies and is expected to become mainstream in the future. It is foreseeable that automated truck platoons and human drivers will share the roads and interact regularly. As a new traffic element, the truck platoon may influence other drivers' behaviors and mental states, potentially compromising the safety of mixed traffic. While existing studies have extensively explored drivers' behavioral responses to truck platoons, little is known about their psychophysiological states during such interactions, par

Sex-specific differences in psychophysiological stress-induced circadian sleep disruption and its impact on glucose metabolism in mice.

AIMS: Sex differences in the prevalence of chronic sleep disorders (CSD), including insomnia, have been documented. Questionnaire-based surveys generally report a higher prevalence in women, whereas polysomnographic assessments often indicate a higher prevalence in men. To elucidate sex differences in sleep disturbances and associated impairments in glucose metabolism, we employed a mouse model of CSD induced by psychophysiological stress. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of one week of CSD under normal chow on activity and sleep-wake rhythms and six weeks of CSD under a high-fat high-sucros

Beware of What You Expect? A Partial Replication Study on the Behavioral and Psychophysiological Effects of Negative Expectations on Mechanical Hypersensitivity.

Mechanical hypersensitivity of uninjured skin surrounding a cutaneous injury is a sign of plasticity of the nociceptive system and can be induced in healthy individuals using high-frequency electrical stimulation (HFS). However, despite a broad body of evidence for acute painful stimuli, mixed results have been reported concerning the role of negative expectations in the development of mechanical hypersensitivity. Given the theoretical and clinical relevance of verbal suggestions' impact on the potential development of mechanical hypersensitivity, this study aimed to replicate previous positiv

Effects of repeated balneotherapy on skin hydration and psychophysiological stress: findings from a 16-week korean spa trial.

Balneotherapy has traditionally been associated with skin health and psychological well-being. However, few studies have assessed its effects during extended use in real-world, community-based settings. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of repeated balneotherapy on skin barrier function and psychological stress regulation in middle-aged women. A 16-week quasi-experimental trial was conducted in Asan, Republic of Korea, involving 58 community-dwelling women aged 40-64 years. Participants were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 29), which received biweekly 20-minute immersion s

Progressive exercise training improves cardiovascular psychophysiological outcomes in young adult women with a history of adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are early-life psychosocial stressors that are associated with poorer mental health and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in a dose-dependent manner. We examined the feasibility of an 8-wk combined aerobic and resistance exercise training program to improve systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum endothelin-1 (ET-1), resilience, hope agency, and hope pathways in young women with ACEs. Forty-two healthy women (21 ± 3 yr) with ≥4 (ACE+; n = 28) or 0 ACEs (ACE-; n = 14) participated in this study. Women with ACEs were randomly assign

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation via tragus or cymba conchae: Are its psychophysiological effects dependent on the stimulation area?

Efforts in optimizing transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) are crucial to further develop its potential in improving cognitive and autonomic regulation. The present study focused on this topic. The aim was to compare for the first time the main stimulation areas of the ear currently used in studies with tVNS, taking cognitive as well as neurophysiological effects into account. The main areas to be compared with one another were tragus, cymba conchae, and earlobe (sham) stimulation. Post-error slowing, which has already been shown to be influenced by tVNS, was used to investigate the c
