Customized online and onsite training for rabies-control officers.

PROBLEM: It is difficult to deliver adequate training for people working in rabies control in low and middle-income countries. Popular e-learning systems for low-income settings are not well suited to developing and testing practical skills, including laboratory methods. APPROACH: We customized training in rabies control methods for African professionals and students from different disciplines. Trainees participated in preparatory online sessions, evaluations and exercises before and after a 12-day workshop. Trainees and mentors continued to interact through an online forum up to one year aft

Health promotion in the city: a review of current practice and future prospects in the United States.

To achieve its health goals, the United States must reduce the disproportionate burden of illness and poor health borne by urban populations. In the 20th century, patterns of immigration and migration, changes in the global economy, increases in income inequality, and more federal support for suburbanization have made it increasingly difficult for cities to protect the health of all residents. In the last 25 years, epidemics of human immunodeficiency virus infections and substance abuse and increases in homelessness, lack of health insurance, rates of violence, and concentrations of certain po

The role of social media in public health awareness during times of war in Sudan: snakebites and scorpion stings.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenomation (SBE) and scorpion sting envenomation (SSE) are significant neglected tropical diseases that primarily affect impoverished communities in rural areas of developing nations. A lack of understanding about snake and scorpion species and their distribution exacerbates the disabilities and fatalities caused by SBE and SSE. In Sudan, particularly in regions affected by ongoing conflicts where healthcare resources are scarce, social media platforms offer a cost-effective approach to addressing public health challenges. Our aim in this study is to highlight the benef

Is Public Health Response to the Phenomenon of Alcohol Use during Pregnancy Adequate to the Polish Women's Needs?

Due to the risks it poses to a child's health, drinking alcohol during pregnancy is a serious problem that the public health sector is struggling to deal with. The reasons why women who do not have alcohol problems do not give up drinking alcohol completely during pregnancy are still poorly understood. And the knowledge available about them does not translate into communication strategies in Poland. The analysis of standards and examples of good practice allows to formulate proposals for improving the quality and effectiveness of social campaigns addressed to the general population and women o

[Knowledge is prevention: a novel approach to breast cancer prevention].

Data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health shows that the breast cancer is one of the leading causes of women's death, despite the enhancements in treatment and diagnosis of this disease. Successive explanatory advertising campaigns emphasized the methods available for prevention: auto examination, clinical examination by a health care professional and mammography. Regardless of their relevance, only these strategies did not reduced incidence of breast cancer, since they do not impact on the oncogenesis factors. The objective of this article is to develop a health promotion activity through th

[Attitudes towards cadaveric organ donation--results from a representative survey of the German population].

The increasing deficit of organs causes a drastic decline in the quality of life and survival of numerous patients in need of a transplantation. The purpose of this representative community study was to survey attitudes toward transplantation in the German population and to identify underlying determinants. Unlike previous surveys, fears and concerns were elicited based on a concrete case vignette. Among the 1,002 participants, 90 % were in favour of organ donation in general; 21 % reported having signed an organ donor card. Consent to organ donation was associated with younger age and higher

Assessing police officers' attitudes and legal knowledge on behaviors that impact HIV transmission among people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Policing practices such as syringe confiscation and arrest can act as important social-structural drivers of HIV risk among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, police referral to treatment and other services may improve the health of PWID. Little is known about the role of modifiable attitudinal and knowledge factors in shaping officer behavior. Using baseline findings from a police education program (PEP), we assessed relationships between drug policy knowledge and attitudes towards public health interventions with self-reported syringe confiscation, drug arrest, and service

Understanding relationships among trauma, post-tramatic stress disorder, and health outcomes.

Since Selye first published his classic work, The Stress of Life, a great deal of research has investigated the relationship between stress and physical health. Most of this research has focused on stressors such as divorce, bereavement, and job loss, but some has examined the health effects associated with extreme stressors, including war, sexual victimization, disasters, and serious accidents. The evidence presented here shows that poor physical health should be recognized, along with mental health problems and impaired psychosocial functioning, as an outcome of traumatic exposure. PTSD and
