Quantitative Analysis of Quadriceps Forces in Adolescent Females during Running with Infrapatellar Straps.

Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is caused by high, repetitive, and continuous traction exerted by the quadriceps on the tibial tuberosity, primarily occurring in adolescents. Infrapatellar straps are commonly recommended for its prevention and treatment, yet their impact on quadriceps forces in adolescents remains unstudied. Furthermore, current research on OSD predominantly focuses on adolescent males, with limited attention to adolescent females, despite similar incidence rates in both groups. This study aimed to quantify the quadriceps forces during running, both with and without infrapatell

Relationships among measures of knee musculoskeletal impairments, gross motor function, and walking efficiency in children with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: The study was designed to determine whether relationships exist among knee muscle spasticity, isometric knee muscle strength, knee muscle balance, gross motor function, and walking efficiency in children with spastic cerebral palsy and to evaluate the relative contributions of impairment measures to functional outcome measures. METHODS: Twenty-seven children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy participated. Knee muscle strength and spasticity were measured by a hand-held dynamometer and the Ashworth Scale, respectively. Functional abilities were assessed by the Gross Motor Function

Preseason hamstring muscle weakness associated with hamstring muscle injury in Australian footballers.

Hamstring muscle strain is the most prevalent injury in Australian Rules Football, accounting for 16% of playing time missed as a result of injury. Thirty-seven professional footballers from an Australian Football League team had preseason measurements of hamstring and quadriceps muscle concentric peak torque at 60, 180, and 300 deg/sec measured on a Cybex 340 dynamometer. Players were studied prospectively throughout the 1995 season. During that time, six players sustained clinically diagnosed hamstring muscle injuries that caused them to miss match-playing time. The injured hamstring muscles…

Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists and glucocorticoids differentially affect skeletal muscle inflammation and pathology in muscular dystrophy.

Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) slow cardiomyopathy in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and improve skeletal muscle pathology and function in dystrophic mice. However, glucocorticoids, known antiinflammatory drugs, remain a standard of care for DMD, despite substantial side effects. Exact mechanisms underlying mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) signaling contribution to dystrophy are unknown. Whether MRAs affect inflammation in dystrophic muscles and how they compare with glucocorticoids is unclear. The MRA spironolactone and glucocorticoid prednisolone were each admi

Strain mapping using compressed sensing accelerated 4D flow MRI-Potential for detecting coactivation in thigh muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Deterioration in knee extensor function is significantly related to decline in functional mobility, stability and proprioception increasing risk of injury and falls. Coactivation of the hamstrings has been reported in normal and neuromuscular conditions during knee extension emphasizing coordinated muscle activation through range of motion. This study evaluated a prototype compressed sensing accelerated 4D Flow (CS-4DFlow) sequence for volumetric MRI strain mapping of the entire thigh during isometric contraction. METHODS: Dynamic imaging (at 30% and 45% Maximum Voluntary Contra

Thigh musculature in relation to chronic anterior cruciate ligament tear: muscle size, morphology, and mechanical output before reconstruction.

Eighteen male patients who had untreated chronic ACL rupture were studied in order to evaluate thigh muscle size, morphology, and isokinetic performance of the quadriceps muscle. Computed tomography disclosed a 5.1% mean atrophy of the quadriceps (P less than 0.05), 2.1% slight hypertrophy of the hamstrings (P less than 0.05), and also nonsignificant changes of all other muscle areas of the injured thigh. Muscle morphology (m. vastus lateralis) was normal in 11 biopsy specimens, whereas minor abnormalities (irregular shape or hypotrophy) could be seen in the rest. Isokinetic mechanical output …

Activity of Krebs cycle enzymes in mdx mice.

INTRODUCTION: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative disease of skeletal, respiratory, and cardiac muscles caused by defects in the dystrophin gene. More recently, brain involvement has been verified. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress may underlie the pathophysiology of DMD. In this study we evaluate Krebs cycle enzymes activity in the cerebral cortex, diaphragm, and quadriceps muscles of mdx mice. METHODS: Cortex, diaphragm, and quadriceps tissues from male dystrophic mdx and control mice were used. RESULTS: We observed increased malate dehydrogenase activity in th…

Type of measurement used influences central and peripheral contributions to quadriceps weakness after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: The relative contribution of muscle size and voluntary activation (VA) on quadriceps strength after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains inconclusive. Here, we aimed to determine the contributions of muscle size and VA on quadriceps strength in ACL-reconstructed patients and determine if contributions were similar if unilateral outcomes (i.e. ACL-reconstructed limb) or the LSI was used. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: A university research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen individuals 6-12 months after ACL reconstruction (Age: 22.3 ± 6.0yr, Height: 1.

Non-volitional assessment of skeletal muscle strength in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Although quadriceps weakness is well recognised in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the aetiology remains unknown. In disabled patients the quadriceps is a particularly underused muscle and may not reflect skeletal muscle function as a whole. Loss of muscle function is likely to be equally distributed if the underlying pathology is a systemic abnormality. Conversely, if deconditioning and disuse are the principal aetiological factors, weakness would be most marked in the lower limb muscles. METHODS: The non-volitional technique of supramaximal magnetic stimulation was

Feeding the debate: Do masticatory muscles resist age-related decline better than lower limb muscles?

Age-related declines in muscle mass and strength result from intrinsic ageing and reduced mechanical loading. Masticatory muscles, being continuously used for feeding, may be less affected. We cross-sectionally compared ageing effects on locomotor and masticatory muscles in 30 women: young (26±1.8 y), middle-aged (44.1±3.4 y), and older (69.5±3.1 y). Cross-sectional area (CSA) of the quadriceps femoris and masseter was assessed by panoramic ultrasound, and knee extension torque (KE) and bite force (BF) were measured via isokinetic dynamometry and a bite force sensor. Both muscles showed progre

Motor Unit Recruitment is Altered When Acute Experimental Pain is Induced at a Site Distant to the Contracting Muscle.

Acute pain alters motor unit discharge properties in muscles that are painful or influence loading of painful structures. Less is known about the changes in discharge when pain is induced in distant tissues that are unable or have limited capacity to modify the load of the contracting muscle. We aimed to determine whether acute experimental pain alters quadriceps motor unit discharge when pain is induced in; (i) a muscle that is unlikely to be mechanically influenced by modified quadriceps activity (tibialis anterior: TA), or (ii) the antagonist muscle (biceps femoris: BF). Relationships between diffusion tensor parameters and measures of skeletal muscle fiber size and strength after anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Alterations in skeletal muscle morphology after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear are a major contributing factor to protracted quadriceps muscle weakness limiting person's return to function. Microstructural changes in skeletal muscle are difficult to assess noninvasively, but understanding these changes is vital to provide clinicians with additional information to assess injury and guide recovery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging to provide noninvasive metrics of quadriceps muscle morphology and strength. Following …

Adductor canal block versus femoral nerve block for analgesia after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blind study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Femoral nerve block (FNB), a commonly used postoperative pain treatment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), reduces quadriceps muscle strength essential for mobilization. In contrast, adductor canal block (ACB) is predominately a sensory nerve block. We hypothesized that ACB preserves quadriceps muscle strength as compared with FNB (primary end point) in patients after TKA. Secondary end points were effects on morphine consumption, pain, adductor muscle strength, morphine-related complications, and mobilization ability. METHODS: We performed a double-blind, randomi…
