Carbon quantum dots in plant photosynthesis: from material design to agricultural performance.

Sustainable agricultural intensification requires nanomaterials that regulate plant physiology while improving resource-use efficiency and stress resilience. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as photosynthetic nano-regulators because their optical and electronic properties, surface functionality, dispersibility, and compositional flexibility enable control over plant uptake and activity. This review develops a structure-function-performance framework linking CQD physicochemical characteristics, including particle size, surface chemistry, optical properties, and heteroatom doping, with tr…

Voltage-Tunable Nonlocal Metasurface for Enhanced Outcoupling of Emission from Quantum Dots.

Cooperative emission of indistinguishable photons from multiple distant sources can enable quantum information processing, and low-density semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) embedded in metasurfaces hold promise to scale up this functionality. However, the inhomogeneity in size within QD ensembles and limited interresonator coupling in local metasurfaces make this effect highly unlikely. Here, we demonstrate a nonlocal metasurface platform with embedded GaAs QDs coupled to extended photonic modes with emission wavelength tunability and enhanced free-space emission outcoupling. Natural variation …

Ultra-Confinement of Polaritons in Single Atomic Layer Ag Photonic Quantum Dots.

Light scattering by two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) is immense, especially given their infinitesimal volume, thus enabling strong light-matter interactions. Surface 2D polariton waves manifest through a large concentration of electromagnetic field in the vertical direction, normal to their propagation. By confining vdWH materials into 2D photonic shapes, one can manipulate and compress light in lateral directions. Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy is a perfect tool for direct imaging of the propagating polaritons and studying the properties of c

Ultrafast photoreduction driven by interfacial spin exchange in manganese-doped quantum dots.

Spin-active dopants offer a powerful yet largely unexplored route for controlling interfacial redox chemistry in quantum-confined semiconductors. Here we show that manganese doping in cadmium selenide quantum dots enables an ultrafast spin-exchange-mediated electron-transfer pathway that allows methyl viologen reduction even when conventional band-edge energetics are unfavorable for charge transfer. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that manganese dopants accelerate electron-transfer dynamics by more than an order of magnitude while opening a hot-exciton reduction channel i…

Plasmon-mediated scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence in CdSe/ZnCdS quantum dots.

We report scanning tunneling microscopy-induced luminescence (STML) from CdSe/ZnCdS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) deposited on Au substrates by immersion. Localized electron injection through the tunneling junction enables site-specific optical excitation and photon emission. Light emission from the QDs is observed only when using STM tips that exhibit strong plasmonic emission on the gold surface. Spectral analysis reveals two distinct features: a plasmonic peak at approximately 1.8 eV, which shifts with the applied bias, and an excitonic peak at 1.96 eV, which is bias-independent and consiste…

Multicolor Imaging from Bacteria to 3D Cellular Models Using Carbon Quantum Dots.

Bacterial and cellular imaging at the outset allows us to visualize microbial and cellular behavior and how they interact and respond to their surroundings. However, developing biocompatible and photostable fluorescent probes for visualizing and tracking biological processes in living systems remains a significant challenge. Conventional staining agents, particularly organic dyes, are limited by photobleaching, cytotoxicity, and reduced performance in complex biological environments. In this work, we present citric-acid-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a versatile fluorescent probe capable …

Efficient bioimaging using rare-earth-doped carbon quantum dots: A doping strategy.

This study addressed the limitations of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in bioimaging, specifically low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and complex purification processes, by developing lanthanide-doped CQDs (L-CQDs). Using a microwave-assisted solvothermal method in a glycerol-water system with precursor mass ratios of citric acid monohydrate: urea: NdCl3·6H2O:CeCl3 at 30:3:10:2 and a glycerol/water volume ratio of 2:1, we achieved one-pot synthesis with cerium and neodymium doping. This approach significantly enhanced the PLQY from 0.43% to 69%. The resulting L-CQDs exhibited a graphene-li…

Quantum Dots Interaction with α-Actinin via Experimental Observations and Computational Predictions.

Quantum Dots (QDs) are nanoparticles that are highly desirable for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, cellular tracking, and imaging due to their fluorescent and tunable optical properties. However, the biochemical mechanism of their interaction with intracellular proteins that regulate cytoskeletal organization remains poorly understood. While previous studies have shown QDs' ability to interact with actin and alter actin dynamics, their impacts on actin-binding proteins have not been explored. In this study, we investigated the interaction between CdSe/ZnS QDs and the actin-bindi…

Covalent Organic Framework Quantum Dots for Near-Frictionless Ion Transport Battery Electrolyte.

Optimization of electrolyte with enhanced energy density and durability in battery system is highly demanded yet challenging owing to the high ion transport resistance and complex by-reactions in electrolyte. In this work, we tailored the solid-liquid phase transport interface by adding covalent organic frameworks quantum dots (COFs QDs) into electrolyte. COFs QDs with abundant lipophilic ether-oxygen groups and ∼12 nm nano-size can serve as myriad ion-transport nano-engines for constantly replenishing the interface with Li+ to achieve near-frictionless ion transport (tLi + = 0.98) and excepti…

Quercetin carbon quantum dots: dual-target therapy for intracerebral hemorrhage in mice.

Following intracerebral hemorrhage, mitigating oxidative stress and removing excess iron are critical strategies for reducing secondary brain injury and improving neurological outcomes. In vitro, we synthesized quercetin-ethylenediamine carbon quantum dots (QECQDs) with diameters of 2-11 nm and found that QECQDs effectively scavenge ABTS+· and DPPH· free radicals, defending HT22 cells against hemin-induced oxidative stress. In vivo, QECQDs predominantly accumulate in the pia mater, subarachnoid space, and dura mater after intrathecal injection. Compared to the ICH injury group, QECQDs treatmen…

PbTe quantum dots highly packed monolayer fabrication by a spin coating method.

This study investigates the fabrication of large-area, highly-ordered monolayers of PbTe quantum dots (QDs) on TiO2/ITO substrate, using a fast, simple, and repeatable spin-coating technique. For the first time, a real monolayer (a layer with the height of a single QD) covering approximately 3 cm2 was successfully prepared, achieving a root-mean-square roughness (Rq) of 1.37 nm. The research systematically explores key parameters such as QD morphology, concentration, spin-coating conditions, substrate characteristics, wetting properties, and solvent effects to optimize thin film deposition. Th…

Photo-Induced Bandgap Engineering of Metal Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots In Flow.

Over the past decade, lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted significant attention due to their tunable optoelectronic properties for next-generation printed photonic and electronic devices. High-energy photons in the presence of haloalkanes provide a scalable and sustainable pathway for precise bandgap engineering of LHP NCs via photo-induced anion exchange reaction (PIAER) facilitated by in situ generated halide anions. However, the mechanisms driving photo-induced bandgap engineering in LHP NCs remain not fully understood. This study elucidates the underlying PIAER m

Analytical control of imatinib in bioanalytical samples using graphene quantum dots sensing.

An analytical method for the determination of imatinib (IMA, the primary treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia), based on the fluorescence properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), is reported in this work. The method is addressed to the analytical control of IMA in biological and pharmaceutical samples, due to the present interest in the control of the doses of this anticancer drug, as well as the therapeutic monitoring. The whole method involves the use of a solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure, followed by an evaporation step, for the treatment of biological samples. For that, tC18 sor…

Non-Destructive Low-Temperature Contacts to MoS2 Nanoribbon and Nanotube Quantum Dots.

Molybdenum disulfide nanoribbons and nanotubes are quasi-1D semiconductors with strong spin-orbit interaction, a nanomaterial highly promising for quantum electronic applications. Here, it is demonstrated that a bismuth semimetal layer between the contact metal and this nanomaterial strongly improves the properties of the contacts. Two-point resistances on the order of 100 kΩ are observed at room temperature. At cryogenic temperature, Coulomb blockade is visible. The resulting stability diagrams indicate a marked absence of trap states at the contacts and the corresponding disorder, compared t

Kidney injury contributes to edema of zebrafish larvae caused by quantum dots.

Edema represents a notable outcome in fishes exposed to aquatic pollutants, yet the underlying etiology remains inadequately understood. This investigation delves into the etiological factors of edema formation in 7 days post fertilization (dpf) zebrafish larvae following their exposure to InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), which was chosen as a prototypical edema inducer. Given the fundamental role of the kidney in osmoregulation, we used transgenic zebrafish lines featuring fluorescent protein labeling of the glomerulus, renal tubule, and blood vessels, in conjunction with histopathological scrutin…

Curvature preference of cubic CsPbBr3 quantum dots embedded onto phospholipid bilayer membranes.

Curvature-mediated lipid-protein interactions are important determinants of numerous vital cellular reactions and mechanisms. Biomimetic lipid bilayer membranes, such as giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs), coupled with quantum dot (QD) fluorescent probes, provide an avenue to elucidate the mechanisms and geometry of induced protein aggregation. However, essentially all QDs used in QD-lipid membrane studies encountered in the literature are of the cadmium selenide (CdSe) or CdSe core/ZnS shell type, which are quasispherically shaped. We report here the membrane curvature partitioning of cube-sha

Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of aqueous Zn-based quantum dots for bioapplications.

Semiconducting nanoparticles called quantum dots (Qds) present unique optoelectronic properties based on their extremely small size, composition, and spherical shape, which make them suitable for use as diagnostic and theranostic agents in biological samples. The main scope of the fabrication of Qds is real-time diagnosis, therapy, drug delivery, and in vitro and in vivo tracking, presenting strong resistance to photobleaching. In this work, quantum dots such as ZnO, ZnSe, ZnS, and doped ZnS : Mn and ZnS : Cd were developed via a simple sol-gel synthesis in an aqueous solution. Morphological, …
