A series of neutral anion receptors with one to three thiourea arms were synthesized and their binding to tetrabutylammonium chloride, acetate, and dihydrogen phosphate salts in aqueous DMSO mixtures was examined. The three-armed thiourea host was found to strongly and selectively bind H2PO4(-) even in DMSO solutions containing up to 30% water. This enabled the dihydrogen phosphate salt to be extracted from water into chloroform in its dibasic form despite the high heat of the hydration of HPO4(2-).

A new type of grafting chitosan (CTS) was synthesized using 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride (HGCTS). The adsorption of Cr(VI) on HGCTS was studied. The effect factors on adsorption and the adsorption mechanism were considered. The results indicated that the HGCTS could concentrate and separate Cr(VI) at pH 4.0; the adsorption equilibrium time was 80 min; the maximum adsorption capacity was 205 mg/g. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid salts of tertiary amines were employed as extremely mild acidic activators for rapid glycosylations. Glycosyl phosphite triesters bearing an acid-labile 4,4'-dimethoxytrityl (DMTr) group for transient protection worked as glycosyl donors effectively in the presence of the activators to afford the corresponding disaccharides in good yields without loss of the DMTr group.

Raising the magnesium level from 0.4 to 1.5 mM in a medium containing only amino acids (2.08%), salts, and vitamins increased enterotoxin B production by Staphylococcus aureus S-6 by about 80%. The level of phosphates in the medium was lowered to one-tenth (to 2.87 mM) the original amount without adversely affecting growth and enterotoxin production.
