Racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage: community violence as a mediator.

Firearm carriage poses a significant public health challenge, especially for youth (ages 14-24) living in predominantly Black communities that endured racial and economic segregation. Structural racism is a determinant of fatal and nonfatal firearm assaults, but the influence of structural racism on youth firearm carriage has received limited attention. Our study examines whether community violence exposure mediates the association between racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage. We analyzed data among 599 youths who sought emergency care and reported drug use within the pas…

How intersectional identity and discrimination contribute to depressive symptoms and hair cortisol concentrations among low-income, racially and sexual diverse adults.

Significant gaps remain in our understanding of how minority stress patterns health outcomes for adults at the intersection of ethnicity/ race and sexual orientation. In particular, little is known about how cumulative cortisol (measured via hair cortisol concentration as an indicator of chronic stress; HCC) and depressive symptoms are related to holding an intersectional minoritized identity (e.g., sexual minority people of color; SM-POC) and experiencing intersectional discrimination (e.g., heterosexism and racism). The current study examined the relationship between intersectional identity …

Interpersonal, Community, and Societal Stressors Mediate Black-White Memory Disparities.

OBJECTIVES: Structural racism creates contextual stressors that disproportionately affect Black, relative to White, older adults in the United States and may contribute to worse cognitive health. We examined the extent to which interpersonal, community, and societal stressors uniquely explain Black-White disparities in initial memory and memory change. METHODS: The sample included 14,199 non-Latino Black and White older adults (Mage = 68.32, 19.8% Black) from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study who completed psychosocial questionnaires at baseline and a word list memory task every 2 years ov…

Racial categories and visual descriptions in police emergency calls.

Taken-for-granted presumptions about race are incorporated into the operating logic of many institutions. In emergency police calls, racialization is routinely used to accomplish visual descriptions of persons of interest. This use of racial categories relies on and reproduces inferences about race as visually discernible. These inferences are bound up in colonial histories and ongoing racist violence and discrimination. Our discursive psychology study documents how participants make links between racial category membership and visual appearance and orient to racialization as a delicate but ne

Revisiting "Excited Delirium": Does the Diagnosis Reflect and Promote Racial Bias?

INTRODUCTION: "Excited delirium" (ExD) is purported to represent a certain type of agitated state that can lead to unexpected death. The 2009 "White Paper Report on Excited Delirium Syndrome," authored by the American College of Emergency Medicine (ACEP) Excited Delirium Task Force, continues to play a pivotal role in defining ExD. Since that report was produced, there has been an increasing appreciation that the label has been applied more often to Black people. METHODS: Our aim was to analyze the language of the 2009 report, the role of potential stereotypes, and the mechanisms that may pot

'If I Were White': a qualitative analysis of the experiences of minoritized ethnic groups with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), individuals of minoritized ethnic groups report poorer healthcare experiences and face disparities i … cluding patient partners. RESULTS: Interviews generated three main themes: (1) subtle and systemic racism in care and society, (2) racialized medical and behavioural stereotyping, and (3) socio-cultural factors impacting doctor-patient communication and rapport building. Throughout each theme, participant recommendations for improving care were raised. …

Segregated in Life and Death: Arnold R. Rich and the Racial Science of Tuberculosis.

Arnold Rich (1893-1968) was an acclaimed pathologist and the first Jewish department chair at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In his landmark text, The Pathogenesis of Tuberculosis, Rich continued to advance the concept of racial susceptibility to tuberculosis a decade after mainstream medicine recognized that environmental factors fueled the disease. While Rich fits into the historical narrative that embedded categories of race facilitated scientific racism, two characteristics unique to Rich help to explain why he persisted. First were the scientific origins of his theories. While raci…

Beliefs in an Unjust World: Mediating Ethnicity-Related Stressors and Psychological Functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Racism is negatively associated with health. Explorations of cognitive reactions, such as beliefs in an unjust world (BUW), are needed to understand the associations between both perceived discrimination and own-group conformity pressures (OGCPS) and reduced psychological well-being. METHOD: With a sample of 215 ethnic minority individuals, this study used structural equation modeling to explore BUW's mediating role between the two aforementioned forms of ethnicity-related stressors (ERS), anger rumination, and negative affect. RESULTS: ERS were directly positively associated with…

Uplifting the Voices of Marginalized Black Communities: Exploring Perspectives on Peace.

INTRODUCTION: Peace is a key determinant of health, especially for marginalized populations facing racism, socioeconomic inequities, and chronic stress. This study explored how Black adults define and experience peace to inform culturally grounded, equity-focused health interventions. METHODS: As part of the community-engaged Nurses4BlackWellbeing project, 482 Black adults from a low-income community responded to the open-ended question, "What is peace?" via written or verbal formats. Inductive content analysis was conducted using NVivo. RESULTS: Four interconnected categories emerged: (a) p…

Adolescent Sexual Behavior, Contraceptive Use, and STI Testing during the COVID-19 Pandemic (January-June 2021).

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) behaviors and access to services. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (n=7,705) on sexual activity, condom and contraceptive use, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. We tested differences in SRH outcomes by demographics, racism experience, and English proficiency. Is your own team against you? Implicit bias and interpersonal regard in criminal defense.

Racial disparities in conviction and incarceration have been lamentable features of legal systems for a long time. Research has addressed the attitudes and decisions of police, prosecutors, jurors, and judges in contributing to these disparities, but very little attention has been paid to defendants' own team members-i.e., criminal defense attorneys. Researchers have specifically identified this as a "scholarly gap". To address this, we conducted an empirical study of criminal defense attorneys practicing in forty-three U.S. states (N = 327). The attorneys completed both an implicit measure de

Measuring system readiness for equity in sepsis care: Survey development and psychometrics.

BACKGROUND: Achieving racial equity in sepsis care is a complex challenge that requires organizational readiness across multiple domains, such as culture and capacity. OBJECTIVES: This study provides a validated tool to empirically measure health system readiness to address structural racism in sepsis care, essential for improving health equity and patient outcomes. METHODS: This study employed a mixed methods approach involving three key steps: adaptation, cognitive interviews, and psychometric analysis. The novel survey was first adapted based on a literature review and expert input. Cogni…

Racial Health Equity Plans in the 30 Largest US Cities.

BACKGROUND: Racial inequities in life expectancy vary significantly across US cities, with city-level gaps ranging from zero to more than 10 years. Given that these inequities are rooted in racism and maintained through social structures and policies, population-level solutions are needed. Local health departments (LHD) are well-situated to lead these types of changes. METHODS: We conducted an environmental scan and document review of formal health plans of the LHDs with jurisdictions covering the 30 most populous US cities. We assessed the inclusion of equity priorities and specific and meas…
