The impact of prolonged low-dose radiation exposure on tear function and corneal endothelial parameters in radiation workers.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effects of prolonged occupational exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation (X-rays) on tear film parameters and c … es (15, 8, and 9 mm vs. control: 18 mm, P < 0.001). Tear osmolarity increased with chronic low-dose radiation exposure (303, 310, and 313 mOsm/L vs. control: 302 mOsm/L), and TBUT was shortened (6, 4, and 4 s vs. control: 14 s) (P < 0.001 for both). CD was reduced in radiation groups (2683, 2709, 2647 cells/mm2 vs. control: 2830 cells/mm2, P < 0.001), whereas CV, HE …

Evaluation of external radiation exposure in patients treated with 177Lu-PSMA and radiation safety assessment of the patient caregivers.

This study evaluates dose rates at various distances and time intervals after 177Lu-PSMA treatment and assesses caregivers' effective doses. Dose rates were measured in 47 patients at 0.5 and 1 m up to 168 h post-injection. Initial dose rates were 34.6 ± 9 μSv (0.5 m) and 24.6 ± 5 μSv (1 m) at 5 min, peaking at 48.5 ± 15 and 31.6 ± 8 μSv at 1 h, then declining significantly over time. Caregivers' effective doses ranged from 20 to 1170 μSv, remaining below international safety limits. This study demonstrates that patient dose rates at a distance of 1-m decline to below 30 μSv/h within 2-3 h pos

[Medical radiation exposure and justification at a large teaching hospital: comparison of radiation-related and disease-related risks].

PURPOSE: The medical X-ray exposure was determined in a 2400-bed hospital. The radiation-related risk was compared with the severity of disease (ICD) to verify the justification for X-ray procedures. A model to estimate radiation and disease-related "loss of lifetime" was applied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: X-ray exposure from radiography, fluoroscopy and CT was determined for diagnostic and interventional procedures during one hospital stay of 403 patients (0.5 % of all 80 000 patients/year). CTDI and DLP in CT, DAP in fluoroscopy or SED in radiography were used to calculate the effective dose (

[The assessment of combined exposure to radiation and chemical factors based on the study of the morbidity of personnel in radiation-chemical manufacture].

The study analyzed the work conditions of personnel engaged into production of plastic modified by radiation. The analysis revealed that the staffers exposed to combined action of radiation and chemical factors face 6 times more intensive harm from radiation resulting in more cardiovascular diseases. All that should be considered in setting the norms for annual radiation doses at workplaces. Real production demands maximal allowable dose to equal 1 rem/year, if the personnel is exposed to chemicals (ozone, nitrogen oxides, ethylene, formaldehyde, acrolein). The scientist elaborated a method to

Occupational Radiation Exposure and Thyroid Nodules in Healthcare Workers: A Review.

Thyroid nodules are a common clinical finding, with their prevalence influenced by multiple environmental and occupational factors, including exposure to ionizing radiation. Healthcare workers, particularly those operating in radiology, nuclear medicine, interventional cardiology, and radiation oncology, are potentially at increased risk due to chronic low-dose radiation exposure. This review aims to evaluate the current evidence regarding the association between occupational radiation exposure and the development of thyroid nodules among healthcare professionals. The findings suggest a higher…

Radiation Exposure and Protection for (Assumed) Pregnant Interventional Cardiologists and Electrophysiologists.

BACKGROUND: Concern about fetus radiation dose and assumed health effects remains a barrier for women considering a career in invasive cardiology. However, there is a lack of real-world fetus exposure data that can be used to support career decisions. The purpose of this work was to measure radiation exposure to invasive cardiologists which would contribute to dose to the fetus during pregnancy. METHODS: Radiation exposure to 42 female and male interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists was monitored during their clinical routine. Multivariate analysis was used to assess the influe…

Referral to radioisotope examination as a source of additional radiation exposure for staff.

BACKGROUND: Every exposure of human to ionizing radiation increases the likelihood of deterministic sequelae. At the same time, it is associated with the risk of stochastic effects. Consequently, this can lead to cancer, mainly of the hematopoietic system. Organs or tissues show a different affinity for gamma radiation. There are many technical and organizational measures which minimize the impact of this radiation on people and especially on the staff of the nuclear medicine laboratory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was based on 208 referrals to the scintigraphic laboratory, which were ex

Role of betaine in liver injury induced by the exposure to ionizing radiation.

Oxidative stress, apoptosis, and fibrosis may play a major role in the development of radiation-induced liver damage. Betaine, a native compound widely present in beetroot, was reported to possess hepato-protective properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of betaine on radiation-induced liver damage. Animals were exposed to 9 Gy applied in 3 doses of 3 Gy/wk. Betaine (400 mg/kg/d), was orally supplemented to rats after the first radiation dose, and daily during the irradiation period. Animals were sacrificed 1 day after the last dose of radiation. The results sh

Levels of Occupational Exposure to Solar Ultraviolet Radiation in Vancouver, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Outdoor workers are at high risk of exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR), a known human carcinogen. In Canada, no objective measures of UVR exposure are available for occupational settings. METHODS: The Outdoor Workers Project collected UVR exposure data among outdoor workers in Vancouver, Canada during the summer of 2013. Objective measures of exposure were taken for one week using calibrated electronic UVR dosimeters. Additional data was collected from workers on skin cancer risk factors, family history of skin cancer, and job type; as well as meteorological data for

Occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation and the risk of prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Preventable risk factors for prostate cancer are poorly understood; sun exposure is a possible protective factor. The goal of this study was to investigate prostate cancer risk in outdoor workers, a population with high sun exposure. METHODS: Prostate cancer cases and controls from a large study (conducted between 1994 and 1997) were used for this analysis. A job exposure matrix (JEM) was used to assign solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) at work as moderate (2 to <6 hours outside/day) or high (≥6 hours). Average daily satellite UV-B measures were linked to the latitude/longitude of

Effects of pre-radiation exposure to LLLT of normal and malignant cells.

PURPOSE: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) efficacy for the prevention of cancer treatment-induced oral mucositis (OM) has been amply described … ll lines showed significant declines after exposure to 50-200 cGy IR when compared to controls. Pre-radiation exposure to LLLT (4.0 J/cm(2)) followed by 1-h incubation blocked this decline in TK6 but not in HL60 cells. The latter cells were sensitized to the killing effects of IR in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: This study shows that pre-IR LLLT treatment re …
