Application of cone-beam computed tomography in the management of dilacerated maxillary central incisor associated with radicular cyst and external root resorption - A case report.

The maxillary anterior region is the most common site for the occurrence of radicular cyst in permanent dentition, because of a high frequency of trauma in this region. As radicular cyst is categorized as an inflammatory cyst, endodontic treatment of the tooth associated with the cyst becomes a part of the treatment regimen. Management of radicular cyst becomes challenging when it involves tooth with complex root morphology. This report presents the diagnosis and successful management of a dilacerated maxillary central incisor associated with a radicular cyst and external root resorption. Cone…

Synergistic Approach to Radicular Cyst Management in an Adolescent: Utilizing Platelet-Rich Fibrin, Demineralized Bone Matrix Xenograft, and Type I Collagen Resorbable Membrane for Optimal Healing.

Dentoalveolar injuries can lead to complications like pulpal necrosis, apical periodontitis, and usually radicular cysts, which are common inflammatory odontogenic cysts often triggered by trauma or infection. Radicular cysts are typically asymptomatic but may cause slow, noticeable swelling. This case report details the surgical management of the same in the periapical region of a maxillary incisor in a 12-year-old female patient. The approach included root canal therapy followed by periapical surgery. The cystic lesion was surgically enucleated, and a combination of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF…

A rare case of a patient with PPP syndrome presenting pancreatic pseudocysts, panniculitis, and symptoms of polyarthritis. A radicular cyst of the upper jaw could be another manifestation of the syndrome.

In rare cases, pancreatic enzymes can enter the bloodstream and cause fat necrosis in the bone and tissue leading to a disorder called pancreatitis, panniculitis, and polyarthritis syndrome. Clinicians should have this syndrome in mind when treating patients with pancreatitis.

Measurement of interleukin 1 alpha and 1 beta (IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta) in human cystic lesions of the jaw. Implications for the pathogenesis of radicular cysts.

Human radicular cystic tissue of jaws was found to contain between 0.823 pg/mg to 18.026 pg/mg interleukin 1 beta and from 0.34 pg/mg to 0.708 pg/mg interleukin 1 alpha. No IL-1 beta and alpha could be found in specimens from healthy patients. A finding which may be extremely relevant in cystic growth and episodes of alveolar bone resorption around the cystic lesion.

Expression of cytokeratins (CKs) 8, 13 and 18 and their mRNA in epithelial linings of radicular cysts: implication for the same CK profiles as nasal columnar epithelium in squamous epithelial lining.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to specify cytokeratin (CK) patterns in lining epithelia of radicular cysts which are sometime lined with ciliated columnar epithelia as seen in the nasal epithelia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined the CK expression in 52 radicular cysts obtained from 32 maxillary and 20 mandibular lesions and investigated CK-mRNA expression using in situ hybridization in 24 maxillary and 13 mandibular cysts and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 24 maxillary cysts. RESULTS: Of the maxillary cysts, 20, 29 and 19 squamous epithelial linings were positiv…

The IL-1β-p65 axis stimulates quiescent odontogenic epithelial cell rests via TGF-β signalling to promote cell proliferation of the lining epithelia in radicular cysts: A laboratory investigation.

AIM: Cyst formation of the jaws is frequently accompanied by the proliferation of odontogenic epithelial cells located in the periodontal ligament (PDL), which consists of heterozygous cells and includes the most fibroblasts. The lining epithelium of radicular cyst, an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin, is derived from the proliferation of the remnants of the Hertwig epithelial root sheath (odontogenic epithelial cell rests of Malassez; ERMs) in the PDL. ERMs are maintained at a lower proliferative state under physiological conditions, but the regulatory mechanisms underlying the inflamm…

Metrical differential diagnosis based on location. Differential diagnosis among various cysts.

An attempt was made to quantify the location of oral lesions. Panoramic radiographs of non-odontogenic cysts (13 globulomaxillary cysts, 8 median maxillary cysts, 8 nasopalatine cysts, 5 nasoalveolar cysts and 11 simple bone cysts) and odontogenic cysts (37 radicular cysts, 13 radicular granulomas, 68 dentigerous cysts and 40 odontogenic keratocysts) were examined. Metrical data (integers) were obtained from a conversion table and the abscissa values (to the first decimal place) were obtained from the centroid of the cysts. Differential diagnosis among these lesions revealed the following: 1. …

Higher expression of galectin-3 and galectin-9 in periapical granulomas than in radicular cysts and an increased toll-like receptor-2 and toll-like receptor-4 expression are associated with reactivation of periapical inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Cysts and periapical granulomas are inflammatory reactions that develop in response to periapical infection by microbial species in dental root canal. It is known that toll-like receptors (TLRs) are pathogen recognition molecules and that galectins are lectins that can be associated with the inflammatory process, stimulating or inhibiting the immune system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in situ expression of TLRs and galectins in radicular cysts and periapical granulomas. METHODS: We analyzed 62 cases (30 radicular cysts, 27 periapical granulomas, and 5 control…

Fibrinolytic activity in cystic lesions of jaw bones.

The fibrinolytic activity in the tissues of cystic lesions of jaw bones was investigated by the semiquantitative method of Astrup. The specimens examined were ameloblastoma (9 cases), follicular cyst (8 cases) and radicular cyst (14 cases). High fibrinolytic activity was observed in ameloblastoma, while in radicular cyst the activity was variable. It is suggested that in radicular cyst inflammatory episodes play an important role in activating local fibrinolysis, while in ameloblastoma the tissue itself has a great capacity to induce locally activated plasmin.

Bilateral inflammatory cysts of the jaw: report of an unusual case.

Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst occurring in the jaws. The cyst is commonly found in relation to the maxillary anterior teeth in the third and fifth decade of life. Although multiple radicular cysts are not uncommon in the jaws, bilaterally symmetrical representation of these cysts is rare. Radiographs prior to extraction help in diagnosis of these cysts and thereby prevent further morbidities. We report a case of 16-year-old male patient who presented bilateral radicular cysts symmetrically in the mandible.

Expression of Dlx-5 and HLX Proteins in Odontogenic Cysts.

Odontogenic cysts, commonly detected during routine examinations involving head and neck imaging such as orthopantomograms and computed tomography (CT), are classified into two groups: developmental and inflammatory. Radicular cysts, which belong to the inflammatory group, originate from odontogenic epithelium, while dentigerous cysts of developmental origin are observed as a result of peri-coronal expansion of fluid in the dental follicle. The diagnosis and identification of odontogenic cysts rely on clinical, radiographic, and histological evaluations. This study aimed to demonstrate the exp…

PTCH gene altered in dentigerous cysts.

Motivated by the evidence that odontogenic keratocysts are associated with genetic alterations, we examined the possibility that development of other odontogenic cysts can be attributed to gene malfunctioning, in particular to the PTCH gene. Cyst epithelium was examined for polymorphism on chromosome 9q22.3, the region that contains the PTCH gene. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for the D9S287 marker and/or D9S180 marker was observed in about 50% of dentigerous cysts, whereas radicular cysts gave no indication of lesions in the PTCH region. As a more direct argument for PTCH involvement in cystic…

Apical periodontitis: preliminary assessment of microbiota by 16S rRNA high throughput amplicon target sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Apical periodontitis includes periapical granulomas and radicular cysts, which are histologically distinguished by the absence and the presence of an epithelial lining, respectively. The main cause of apical periodontitis is the bacterial colonization of the root canal space. This research aimed at assessing whether and how periapical granulomas and radicular cysts differ in terms of microbiota using high throughput amplicon target sequencing (HTS) techniques. METHODS: This study included 5 cases of Periapical Granulomas (PGs) and 5 cases of Radicular Cysts (RCs) selected on the b…
