Quantification of FISH-painted chromosome aberrations after domestic radon exposure.

Chromosome painting (target chromosomes 1, 4, 12) was performed in peripheral lymphocytes from 25 occupants of nine houses with indoor radon concentrations of 210-3000 Bqm-3. Compared to a control group, the mean frequency of symmetrical translocations of the radon group was slightly but not significantly (p < 0.10) increased. A similar tendency became apparent for a comparison of two groups of subjects with cumulative radon exposures above and below 2800 Bqm-3 y. It is concluded that FISH-based measurements of stable symmetrical translocations should reflect the cumulative radon exposure to h

Acrylamide/ethyl cellulose Schiff base hydrogel for uranium capture from aqueous solutions using response surface methodology.

In this study, a novel acrylamide Schiff base hydrogel was synthesized as an efficient adsorbent for uranium removal from contaminated environments. The hydrogel was characterized using a range of techniques, and its adsorption performance was systematically evaluated through batch experiments that investigated the effects of pH, contact time, initial ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature. Under optimized conditions, pH 4.0, 120 min, 70 mg adsorbent, 298 K, and 100 mg L-1 U(VI), a uranyl ion removal efficiency of 99.92 % was achieved. Notably, using a lower adsorbent dose (5 mg)

Residential radon decay products are associated with cough and phlegm in patients with COPD.

Radon decay products attach to particulate matter (referred to as particle radioactivity, PR) has been shown to be potential to promote airway damage after inhalation. In this study, we investigated associations between PR with respiratory symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients with COPD. 141 male patients with COPD, former smokers, completed the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) after up to four 1-week seasonal assessments (N=474) of indoor (home) and ambient (central site) particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) and black carbon (BC). Indoor PR was

[Carcinogenic risks associated with radiation pollution].

1. The cancerogenic pollution by non-ionizing radiations is limited to the case of solar ultraviolet, whose activity at ground level may be increased as a consequence of the stratospheric depletion of ozone, itself produced by certain chemical pollutants: nitrogen oxydes from supersonic aircrafts, freon. 2. As regards ionizing radiations, the discussion is focused on the fundamental problem of the "threshold", aand on the means by which one may obtain some quantitative data related to carcinogenesis by small radiation doses in Man. A new concept, that of a "practical threshold" is proposed. 3.

Subchronic exposure of BALB/c and C57BL/6 strains of Mus musculus to the radioactive environment of the Chornobyl, Ukraine exclusion zone.

Environmental contamination resulting from the Chornobyl, Ukraine, disaster offers a unique opportunity to examine the in vivo biological effects of chronic, low-dose exposure to radiation. Laboratory studies of acute exposure to ionizing radiation have been used to estimate risk and potential human health effects by the extrapolation of laboratory data to situations of low-dose environmental radiation exposure. Few studies, however, have explored the biological consequences of low-dose exposure via in situ environmental radiation in a sentinel species. In the present study, laboratory strains

Factors associated with the risk perception and purchase decisions of Fukushima-related food in South Korea.

Following the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, the risk level perceived by Koreans on the radioactive contamination of Japanese food that is being distributed in Korea remains high. Many of these perceptions are based on subjective risk perception rather than an objective measure with scientific evidence, which makes communicating risks more difficult; therefore, it is critical to understand factors associated with risk perception for effective risk communication. In this study, we identified variables that are associated with buying tendencies and opinions about the regulatory policy o

Colloid formation in Hanford sediments reacted with simulated tank waste.

Solutions of high pH, ionic strength, and aluminum concentration have leaked into the subsurface from underground waste storage tanks atthe Hanford Reservation in Washington State. Here, we test the hypothesis that these waste solutions alter and dissolve the native minerals present in the sediments and that colloidal (diameter < 2 microm) feldspathoids form. We reacted Hanford sediments with simulated solutions representative of Hanford waste tanks. The solutions consisted of 1.4 or 2.8 mol/kg NaOH, 0.125 or 0.25 mol/kg NaAlO4, and 3.7 mol/kg NaNO3 and were contacted with the sediments for a

The Russian radiation legacy: its integrated impact and lessons.

Information about the consequences of human exposure to radiation in the former Soviet Union has recently become available. These data add new insights and provide possible answers to several important questions regarding radiation and its impact on occupational and public health. The 1986 Chernobyl accident initiated a major and early increase in childhood thyroid cancer that resulted from ingestion of iodine-131 (131I) by young children living in the most heavily contaminated areas of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. No significant additional cancer or other adverse medical effects have yet bee

Effects of coal ash containing elevated uranium decay chain radionuclides on native Octodrilus lissaensis in landfills, focusing on element transfer, radiation dosage, and toxicity assessment.

In this study, the effects of long-term exposure of native earthworms (Octodrilus lissaensis Michaelsen, 1891) that inhabit the disposal site of coal ash with enhanced content of uranium decay chain radionuclides were investigated. The concentrations of V, Fe, Ni, As, Se, Rb, Mo, Sn, Sb, Th and Hg were significantly higher in earthworms from the disposal site, while those of Na, K, Ca, Mn and Co were lower compared to the control. The activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 210Pb and 210Po were six to nine times higher than those in the control group. The mean dose rate of ionizing radiation t

Autotrophic Uranium (VI) bioreduction in groundwater by siderite: Comparison with sulfur and zero-valent iron.

Uranium (U), recognized as a significant health risk in groundwater, has become a key focus in environmental remediation efforts. While numerous electron donors have been investigated for the removal of U(VI) through microbial processes, the potential of abundant and economical Fe(II)-containing minerals remains unexplored. Here, a new inorganic electron donor, siderite (FeCO3) was proposed. Although siderite demonstrates a lesser electron-donating capacity than Fe(0) and S(0), the Siderite-B bioreactor successfully enriched microbes belonging to the Azotobacter genus, which are known for thei

Pilot scale application of 226Ra-contaminated soil leaching remediation.

To address the issue of soil contamination caused by associated elements during the extraction and processing of radioactive minerals, this study employed two types of chemical leaching methods, one based on organic acids and the other on carbonates, to remediate radium-contaminated soil. Large-scale soil slurry reactors were used in field experiments to investigate the effects of acidic and alkaline leaching agents on the removal of 226Ra from naturally contaminated soil, and the optimal operational conditions were determined. The combined use of organic acids, salts and solubilizers has demo

Evaluation of DNA damage in the root cells of Allium cepa seeds growing in soil of high background radiation areas of Ramsar-Iran.

Plants are unique in their ability to serve as in situ monitors for environmental genotoxins. We have used the alkaline comet assay for detecting induced DNA damage in Allium cepa to estimate the impact of high levels of natural radiation in the soils of inhabited zones of Ramsar. The average specific activity of natural radionuclides measured in the soil samples for 226Ra was 12,766 Bq kg(-1) whereas in the control soils was in the range of 34-60 Bq kg(-1). A positive strong significant correlation of the DNA damage in nuclei of the root cells of A. cepa seeds germinated in the soil of high b

An increased frequency of structural chromosome aberrations in persons present in the vicinity of Chernobyl during and after the reactor accident. Is this effect caused by radiation exposure?

About a week after the reactor accident in Chernobyl, a number of German citizens returned to the Federal Republic of Germany from different places of residence in the U.S.S.R. Chromosome analyses of these individuals show a surprisingly significant increase in dicentric chromosomes in comparison to the laboratory control. Acentrics are nearly twice as frequent as dicentrics. Centric rings are also in evidence. Chromatid breaks do not significantly differ from the control with the exception of 1 place of residence. The frequency of aberrations is too high to be induced by absorbed doses calcul

Human health risk assessment of occupational exposure to NORMs using deterministic and Monte Carlo-based methods: a case study of artisanal gold mining areas.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining is a critical livelihood for many in developing regions, yet it poses momentous environmental and health risks, principally through the release of naturally occurring radioactive materials. The study evaluates the annual effective dose received by artisans engaged in several mining activities at Itagunmodi and Iperindo in Osun State, Nigeria. The soil and rock samples were analysed for the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, and 232Th) using gamma spectrometry. These concentrations were then used to determine the annua
