Use of computer databases to reduce radiograph reading errors.

Errors in reading radiologic images create health risks to patients and can adversely affect physicians through litigation and increased insurance costs. This study assessed the usefulness of a radiology teaching database for training physicians to improve their diagnostic accuracy. This tool is particularly important in pediatric radiology because children have unique anatomies and pathologies, and most physicians are generally more familiar with adults. The case collection consisted of normal cases and cases that had changes in the initial interpretations from an existing database of pediatr

Results of Lung Cancer Screening in the Community.

PURPOSE: To address doubts regarding National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) generalizability, we analyzed over 6,000 lung cancer screenings (LCSs) within a community health system. METHODS: Our LCS program included 10 sites, 7 hospitals (2 non-university tertiary care, 5 community) and 3 free-standing imaging centers. Primary care clinicians referred patients. Standard criteria determined eligibility. Dedicated radiologists interpreted all LCSs, assigning Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) categories. All category 4 Lung-RADS scans underwent multidisciplinary review and manageme

Impact of the new density reporting laws: radiologist perceptions and actual behavior.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To assess radiologists' perceptions of how the new Breast Density Notification Act (BDNA) of Pennsylvania would affect their breast density reporting and their actual reporting patterns after implementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under an institutional review board-approved protocol, we surveyed 21 radiologists about how they believe the new law affected their breast density reporting patterns and analyzed actual changes for 16 respondents before and after the law took effect. Three hundred consecutive reports were assessed for each radiologist before and after the

American association for women in radiology (AAWR): Official statement regarding paid family and medical leave (PFML).

Physician well-being is essential to high-quality patient care, yet the lack of universally available paid family and medical leave (PFML) in the United States undermines this principle. The dynamic interplay between work and personal responsibilities-especially during significant life events such as childbirth, illness, or caregiving-can impact healthcare providers' mental and physical health, ultimately affecting patient outcomes. While the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides unpaid, job-protected leave, it excludes many workers and disproportionately impacts women, minorities, and

Patient exposure in medical X-ray imaging in Europe.

Patients are exposed to X rays when undergoing medical examinations in diagnostic radiology. Exposure data acquired and assessed in Germany for the year 1997 resulted in a mean annual effective dose of 2 +/- 0.5 mSv per head of the population, thereby reaching or exceeding the average level of environmental radiation in many cases. The underlying frequency of medical X-ray examinations was approximately 136 million, i.e. approximately 1.7 examinations annually per head of the population. For comparison, corresponding data of other countries were extracted from the UNSCEAR 2000 report or origin

Radiographers are valuable contributors in interpreting computed tomography colonography.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is the primary radiological examination for detection of colorectal cancer and premalignant polyps. It is a complex technique that requires special training and experience of both the radiographers performing the colonography and the radiologists who interpret the results. The considerable number of CTC performed means that interpretation of the examinations is a time-consuming task for radiologists. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of radiographers who received a training programme in colon diagnosing. MET

Secretary of State's POPUMET Inspectorate: the first six years.

The first six years work of the Secretary of State for Health's Inspectorate for regulation 4 of the Ionising Radiation (Protection of Persons Undergoing Medical Examination or Treatment) Regulations 1988 is described. The regulations are colloquially known by the acronym POPUMET, and implement European Directive 84/466 EURATOM in Great Britain. This laid down basic measures for the protection of persons undergoing medical examination or treatment involving ionising radiation. The POPUMET regulations are applicable to all health care settings, public or private sector, but exclude research. Re

Development of radiation countermeasure agents for acute radiation syndromes.

The risk of internal and external exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) has increased alongside the development and implementation of nuclear technology. Therefore, serious security issues have emerged globally, and there has been an increase in the number of studies focusing on radiological prevention and medical countermeasures. Radioprotective drugs are particularly important components of emergency medical preparedness strategies for the clinical management of IR-induced injuries. However, a few drugs have been approved to date to treat such injuries, and the related mechanisms are not entir

Critical considerations in the assessment of health and environmental risks - what we have learned from the nuclear experience.

The radiological experience has produced some sophisticated approaches to estimating the environmental risks of anthropogenic chemicals, based on well-validated models for both health effects and exposure assessment. As to exposure assessment, site- and situation-specific data must be acquired for quantitative predictions. However, the requirements for quantitative estimation are often overlooked, even with the radiological models. Metabolism or other chemical processes, also, may more profoundly alter a chemical contaminant than they would a radioelement. Suitably developed models provide use

Reported patient safety incidents in radiology - understanding the relation between risk areas and their underlying factors.

INTRODUCTION: Learning from errors and underlying causes creates important knowledge, enabling re-evaluation of routines and preventing recurrence of errors. Because of the nature of activities in radiology, measurement of specific risk areas is needed. The aim of this study was to analyse reported events in radiology and identify the underlying causes in relation to the risk. METHODS: Patient Safety Reporting System (PSRS) data from three radiological clinics were retrieved, covering 923 risk events. The reports were studied deductively based on a risk assessment framework (i.e. risk areas)
