Toward Suppression of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Leaching from Creosote-Treated Wood.

Creosote produced from coal-tar distillate is an archaic, highly toxic wood preservative still commonly used today, predominantly in utilitarian applications (e.g., utility poles, railroad crossties, and marine pilings). Creosote consists of a mixture of carbon-based compounds, most of which are known human carcinogens, and its high persistence and leaching from treated wood threaten groundwater and soil. As the total phase-out of creosote-treated wood is a long-term goal, the development of retroactive coatings to mitigate leaching is a high-priority environmental strategy. This study reports

International Experience of Transcatheter Sinus Venosus Defect Closure in Children and Adolescents.

Transcatheter closure of sinus venosus defects (SVD) is an emerging alternative to surgery, however, concerns remain regarding growth potential in paediatric patients treated with fixed-diameter stents. This retrospective study included individuals younger than 18 years from 12 centres. SVD closure was performed using covered stents after demonstration of right upper pulmonary vein redirection during balloon interrogation. Complete closure without significant residual flow was defined as procedural success. Major complications were those necessitating surgical intervention, whereas minor compl

Alcohol Consumption and 15 Causes of Fatal Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The proportion of fatal nontraffic injuries that involve high levels of alcohol use or alcohol intoxication was assessed by cause of injury to generate alcohol-attributable fractions. Updated alcohol-attributable fractions can contribute to improved estimates of the public health impact of excessive alcohol use. METHODS: Peer-reviewed and gray literature for 1995-2019 on 15 causes of fatal nontraffic injuries in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico were systematically reviewed, and state data systems were queried for available estimates of fatalities with recorded blood alcohol concentra

Chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes of train engine drivers.

Studies of Swedish railway employees have indicated that railroad engine drivers have an increased cancer morbidity and incidence of chronic lymphatic leukemia. The drivers are exposed to relatively high magnetic fields (MF), ranging from a few to over a hundred microT. Although the possible genotoxic potential of MF is unclear, some earlier studies have indicated that occupational exposure to MF may increase chromosome aberrations in blood lymphocytes. Since an increased level of chromosomal aberrations has been suggested to predict elevated cancer risk, we performed a cytogenetic analysis on

A fuel-based assessment of off-road diesel engine emissions.

The use of diesel engines in off-road applications is a significant source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM10). Such off-road applications include railroad locomotives, marine vessels, and equipment used for agriculture, construction, logging, and mining. Emissions from these sources are only beginning to be controlled. Due to the large number of these engines and their wide range of applications, total activity and emissions from these sources are uncertain. A method for estimating the emissions from off-road diesel engines based on the quantity of diesel fuel consumed is p

Air quality and PM10-associated poly-aromatic hydrocarbons around the railway traffic area: statistical and air mass trajectory approaches.

Diesel engine railway traffic causes atmosphere pollution due to the exhaust emission which may be harmful to the passengers as well as workers. In this study, the air quality and PM10 concentrations were evaluated around a railway station in Northeast India where trains are operated with diesel engines. The gaseous pollutant (e.g. SO2, NO2, and NH3) was collected and measured by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The advanced level characterizations of the PM10 samples were carried out by using ion chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma

Emissions and air quality impacts of truck-to-rail freight modal shifts in the Midwestern United States.

We present an examination of the potential emissions and air quality benefits of shifting freight from truck to rail in the upper Midwestern United States. Using a novel, freight-specific emissions inventory (the Wisconsin Inventory of Freight Emissions, WIFE) and a three-dimensional Eulerian photochemical transport model (the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model, CMAQ), we quantify how specific freight mode choices impact ambient air pollution concentrations. Using WIFE, we developed two modal shift scenarios: one focusing on intraregional freight movements within the Midwest and a second o

Roads, railways, and childhood cancers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To locate geographical sources of engine exhaust emissions in Great Britain and to link them with the birth addresses of children dying from cancer. To estimate the cancer initiating roles of nearby roads and railways and to measure effective ranges. DESIGN: Birth and death addresses of all children born between 1955 and 1980 in Great Britain, and dying from leukaemia or other cancer during those years, were linked to locations of railway stations, bus stations, ferry terminals, railways, roads, canals, and rivers. Nearest distances to births and deaths were measured, and mi

The influence of sustained attention on railway accidents.

Train accidents and near accidents occurring over a 3-year period were examined within an Australian public rail authority. Retrospective analysis of 112 incidents according to Reason's (1992) Generic Error Modelling System (Reason, 1992, Human Error. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge), revealed a propensity of skill based errors across the more common types of rail mishaps. In agreement with previous rail research, sustained attention was the most salient contributing human factor across all incident types, particularly inattentiveness to railway signals. The unfavourable nature of the wo

Railways, disease and health in South Africa.

The role of South African Railways and Harbours in spreading disease and health care is examined. Attention is focused on the Railways' campaigns against malaria, plague and infectious diseases. A case study of the 1918 'Spanish Influenza' epidemic illustrates how the Railways diffuse disease and health care, and also demonstrates the disruption of services caused by the influenza.

Railyard amputations in children.

Railyard or train-related accidents are a common cause of traumatic amputations in children. Four consecutive children with traumatic lower extremity amputations due to railyard amputation seen between 1975 and 1980 demonstrated: a common mechanism of injury--all were attempting to obtain rides on slow-moving trains near their homes or school; similar lower extremity amputation patterns--four right below knee and two left Syme's amputations; and distinctively abnormal psychosocial backgrounds. The psychosocial abnormalities have been demonstrated to be unique in children sustaining traumatic r

When support for safety misses the mark: The positivity-dampening effect of upper management support following workplace injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace injuries harm not only physical functioning but also employees' psychological connection to work, elevating distress and undermining the emotional energy needed for reintegration. This study examines how formal organizational safety support shapes psychological recovery following injury. METHOD: Drawing on job demands-resources, social impact, and support typology perspectives, we tested whether perceived safety support from upper management, supervisors, and coworkers moderates the relationship between injury exposure and negative (psychological distress) and positive

Reconsidering screening thresholds in health assessments for obstructive sleep apnea using operational and safety incident data.

The rail industry in Australia screens workers for probable obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to known safety risks. However, existing criteria to trigger screening only identify a small proportion of workers with OSA. The current study sought to examine the relationship between OSA risk and rail incidents in real-world data from Australian train drivers, and conducted a proof of concept analysis to determine whether more conservative screening criteria are justified. Health assessment (2016-2018) and subsequent rail incident data (2016-2020) were collected from two passenger rail service prov

Alcohol and the Risk of Railway Suicide.

Suicide is one of the ten most common causes of death in the world. Of all deaths from suicide, 22% can be attributed to the use of alcohol, which means that every fifth suicide would not occur if alcohol were not consumed by the population. People under the influence of alcohol choose more radical and effective methods of dying by suicide, e.g., throwing themselves under a moving vehicle, such as a train. The presented analysis aimed to determine important risk factors affecting railway suicide in Poland and their relation to the state of alcohol intoxication of the victims, and the relations

Overall accessibility to traveling by rail for the elderly with and without functional limitations: the whole-trip perspective.

Elderly persons' perceived accessibility to railway traveling depends on their functional limitations/diseases, their functional abilities and their travel behaviors in interaction with the barriers encountered during whole trips. A survey was conducted on a random sample of 1000 city residents (65-85 years old; 57% response rate). The travels were perceived least accessible by respondents with severely reduced functional ability and by those with more than one functional limitation/disease (e.g., restricted mobility and chronic pain). Those who traveled "often", perceived the accessibility to
