Topical lidocaine effectively mitigates radial pain, spasm, and sympathetic response following trans-radial coronary angiography: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Radial artery spasm (RAS) remains the most prevalent complication of trans-radial coronary angiography (TRA). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impacts of topical lidocaine on radial pain, spasm, and sympathetic response among patients undergoing TRA. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 276 eligible patients for TRA. The patients were 1:1 randomized to receive topical lidocaine gel (2%, 1 g applied to the wrist) or placebo gel 30 min before the angiographic procedure. The incidence of angiographically and clinically diagnosed RAS was recorded, and radi

Comparison of Subconjunctival Triamcinolone with Topical Prednisolone for Routine Anti-Inflammatory Prophylaxis in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery: A Single-Center, Randomized Controlled Trial Pilot Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed operation worldwide. Prophylaxis against postoperative endophthalmitis and inflammation currently includes perioperative, patient-administered instillation of topical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops in the US, Europe and Latin America. As patients can face challenges with adherence to topical drops for self-instillation, injected drugs may offer a solution. Intracameral antibiotic injection is superior to drops for endophthalmitis prevention in manual small incision surgery (MSICS) and phacoemulsification eyes. Subconjunctival

Topical use of tranexamic acid can reduce opioid consumption compared with intravenous use for patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The problem of opioid addiction after total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been widely concerned. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been shown to be effective in reducing blood loss for patients undergoing THA, but few studies focus on its alleviation of postoperative local pain symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether topical TXA could reduce early postoperative hip pain for primary THA patients, thereby reducing the use of opioids, and whether local pain is related to inflammatory response. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled study, we randomly divided 1

Reducing tumescent anesthetic injection pain by topical anesthesia pretreatment among patients undergoing endovenous radiofrequency ablation of varicose veins: A double-blind randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Tumescent anesthesia frequently causes the intraoperative and postoperative pain during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of varicose veins. We have to find a way to reduce pain caused by these injections. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of topical anesthesia pretreatment (TAP) on relieving needle puncture pain during administration of tumescent anesthesia among patients undergoing RFA of varicose veins. METHODS: Eligible patients treated with RFA were recruited and randomized to either application of TAP with lidocaine-prilocaine cream (EMLA) or water-

The effectiveness of electronic pulsed soft tissue vibration compared with topical anaesthesia in reducing the pain of injection of local anaesthetics in adults: a randomized controlled split-mouth clinical trial.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an electronic hand-held pulsed vibration device on the pain of local analgesia (LA) injection and physiologic changes. A prospective randomized controlled clinical trial using split-mouth (crossover) design was implemented. The control-side injection was performed after using topical anaesthesia. The experimental side injection was carried out without topical anaesthesia, but with the aid of a switched-on vibration device. Overall, 332 dental LA injections were given to 166 patients for routine exodontia. The pain at penetration an

Does prophylactic use of topical gelatin-thrombin matrix sealant affect postoperative drainage volume and hematoma formation following microendoscopic spine surgery? A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Microendoscopic spinal surgery has demonstrated efficacy and is increasingly utilized as a minimally invasive approach to neural decompression, but there is a theoretical concern that bleeding and postoperative epidural hematoma (PEH) may occur with increased frequency in a contained small surgical field. Hemostatic agents, such as topical gelatin-thrombin matrix sealant (TGTMS), are routinely used in spine surgery procedures, yet there has been no data on whether PEH is suppressed by these agents when administered in microendoscopic spine surgery. PURPOSE: The purpose of

A prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing the efficacy of polyethylene glycol versus polyethylene glycol combined with topical diltiazem for treating anal fissure in children.

BACKGROUND: Anal fissure (AF) in children is usually treated with laxatives and/or topical agents such as calcium channel blockers. We hypothesize that owing to the superior efficacy of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) in treating constipation in children, adding diltiazem (DTZ) might not improve healing of AF. METHODS: Children ≤14 years with anal fissure presented to the pediatric surgery clinic between November 2014 and March 2016 were recruited. Randomization was performed to either PEG with DTZ or PEG with placebo. Study personnel, patients, and their families were blinded. Primary outcome was

A cluster-randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of using 15% DEET topical repellent with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared to a placebo lotion on malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have limited effect on malaria transmitted outside of sleeping hours. Topical repellents have demonstrated reduction in the incidence of malaria transmitted in the early evening. This study assessed whether 15% DEET topical repellent used in combination with LLINs can prevent greater malaria transmission than placebo and LLINs, in rural Tanzania. METHODS: A cluster-randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between July 2009 and August 2010 in a rural Tanzanian village. Sample size calculation determined that 10 clusters of 47 househo

The efficacy of topical human amniotic membrane-mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (hAMMSC-CM) and a mixture of topical hAMMSC-CM + vitamin C and hAMMSC-CM + vitamin E on chronic plantar ulcers in leprosy:a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Healing of chronic plantar ulcers in leprosy (CPUL) typically takes a long time due to impaired neurological function, thereby reducing the levels of growth factors and cytokines. Cytokines can be found in metabolite products from amniotic membrane stem cells. Chronic ulcers are frequently characterized by high levels of reactive oxygen species. Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) is widely used in skin lesions, owing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin C also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and collagen synthesis properties which are useful in wound healing. Here
