Somatosensory evoked potentials in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are rare antibody-mediated disorders of the central nervous system with a predilection for the spinal cord and optic nerves. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to evaluate the dorsolemniscal system using the somatosensory evoked potential, specifically the registration of the N20 and P40 waves. METHODS: The Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) were prospectively performed in 13 patients with NMOSD. All the patients were recruited from the outpatient clinic of a demyelinating diseases center from Southern Brazil. RESULTS: We evaluated

Multiplexing of cognitive encoding by oculomotor networks leads to incidental gaze shifts.

Humans and other animals are adept at learning to perform cognitively demanding behavioral tasks. Neurophysiological recordings in nonhuman primates during such tasks find that the requisite cognitive variables are encoded strongly in core oculomotor brain regions. Here, we assembled a large dataset-11 monkeys performing an abstract visual categorization task, surveyed across more than 1,000 neural recording sessions-to reveal that this produces a robust but uninstructed behavioral "tell," observed in all subjects and experiments: small, cognitively modulated eye movements. We find that these

[Neuropathic pain and neuroplasticity in functional imaging studies].

Neuropathic pain syndromes are characterised by the occurrence of spontaneous ongoing and stimulus-induced pain. Stimulus-induced pain (hyperalgesia and allodynia) may result from sensitisation processes in the peripheral (primary hyperalgesia) or central (secondary hyperalgesia) nervous system. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms at the nociceptor itself and at spinal synapses have become better understood. However, the cerebral processing of hyperalgesia and allodynia is still controversially discussed. In recent years, neuroimaging methods (functional magnetic resonance imaging, fM

Print-, sublexical and lexical processing in children with reading and/or spelling deficits: An ERP study.

Findings on the neurophysiological correlates of developmental dyslexia are mixed, due to the differential conceptualization of the impairment. Studies differ on whether participants with developmental dyslexia are recruited based on reading skills only or reading as well as spelling skills. The current study contrasts the contribution of impaired reading and spelling to ERP correlates of print sensitivity, lexico-semantic access and sensitivity to orthographic regularities. Four groups of children were recruited: isolated reading deficit, isolated spelling deficit, combined reading and spelli

Mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes of acute bacterial meningitis in children aged <5 years in Pakistan.

OBJECTIVE: Significant neurodevelopmental sequelae are known to occur after acute bacterial meningitis (ABM). This study determined the burden of such sequelae in Pakistani children aged <5 years to guide policies for Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and pneumococcal vaccination. STUDY DESIGN: Cases of ABM were recruited from hospital-based surveillance and assigned to 1 of 3 etiologic groups (Hib, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or unknown etiology). Two age-matched controls were recruited for each case. Six months after enrollment, each case underwent neurologic history and examination, neurod

Abnormal recruitment of working memory updating networks during maintenance of trauma-neutral information in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by disturbances in concentration and memory, symptoms which are a source of further distress for patients. Related to this, abnormalities in underlying working memory (WM) systems have been identified [Clark, C.R., McFarlane, A.C., Morris, P., Weber, D.L., Sonkkilla, C., Shaw, M.E., Marcina, J., Tochon-Danguy, H.J., Egan, G.F., 2003. Pathophysiological Role of Primary Motor Cortex in Essential Tremor.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. However, the complete understanding of ET pathophysiology remains elusive. OBJECTIVE: To explore the pathophysiological role of primary motor cortex (M1) in ET, specifically exploring its neurophysiological changes and their correlation with voluntary motor abnormalities. METHODS: We recruited 30 ET patients and 18 healthy controls (HC). Evaluations were conducted on patients using clinical scales. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess M1 excitability, including motor thresholds and motor

Characteristics of motor evoked potentials in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

With an aging population, it is common to encounter people diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Some will undergo surgeries during which the spinal cord may be compromised and intraoperative neuromonitoring with motor evoked potentials (MEPs) is employed to help mitigate paralysis. No data exist on characteristics of MEPs in older, PVD patients, which would be valuable for patients undergoing spinal cord at-risk surgery or participating in neurophysiological research. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, which can be delivered to the awake patient, was used to stimulate the motor co

Feasibility and efficacy of an at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease with a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Mindfulness is a practice that encourages individuals to cultivate a present-focused, acceptance-based approach for managing psychological distress. Its positive effect on MS has been demonstrated, but learning such technique is expensive and time-consuming. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of an 8-week, at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in a cohort of MS patients. Specifically, we explored the role of a brain-sensing headband providing real-tim

Altered Neural Processing of Reward and Punishment in Women With Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

It has been suggested that the altered function of reward and punishment is an important vulnerability factor leading to the development of drug use disorders. Previous studies have identified evidence of neurophysiological dysfunction in the reward process of individuals with substance use disorders. To date, only a few event-related potential (ERP) studies have examined the neural basis of reward and punishment processing in women with methamphetamine (MA) use disorders. The current ERP research aims to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms of reward and punishment in women with MA u

Disturbances in Brain Physiology Due to Season Play: A Multi-Sport Study of Male and Female University Athletes.

High-performance university athletes experience frequent exertion, resulting in disrupted biological homeostasis, but it is unclear to what extent brain physiology is affected. We examined whether athletes without overtraining symptoms show signs of increased neurophysiological stress over the course of a single athletic season, and whether the effects are modified by demographic factors of age, sex and concussion history, and sport-related factors of contact exposure and season length. Fifty-three university-level athletes were recruited from multiple sports at a single institution and follow

Sepsis-Associated Brain Dysfunction: Mechanisms, Clinical Insights, and Therapeutic Strategies.

Sepsis is a lethal clinical condition representing severe inflammation and immune suppression to pathogen or infection, leading to tissue damage or organ dysfunction. Hyper-inflammation and immune suppression cause a fatal, escalated Blood-Brain Barrier permeability, being a secondary response towards infection resulting in sepsis-associated brain dysfunction. These changes in the BBB lead to the brain's susceptibility to increased morbidity and mortality. An important mechanism of sepsis-associated brain dysfunction includes excessive activation of microglial cells, altered brain endothelial

Cognitive impairments in adult mice with constitutive inactivation of RIP140 gene expression.

Receptor-interacting protein 140 (RIP140) is a negative transcriptional coregulator of nuclear receptors such as estrogen, retinoic acid or glucocorticoid receptors. Recruitment of RIP140 results in an inhibition of target gene expression through different repressive domains interacting with histone deacetylases or C-terminal binding proteins. In this study, we analyzed the role of RIP140 activity in memory processes using RIP140-deficient transgenic mice. Although the RIP140 protein was clearly expressed in the brain (cortical and hippocampus areas), the morphological examination of RIP140(-/

Identifying diagnostic biomarkers in functional motor disorders through multimodal behavioral, neurophysiological, and imaging assessment using explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Functional motor disorders (FMDs) represent a frequent and disabling neurological condition. The lack of reliable diagnostic biomarkers and their heterogeneity might affect diagnosis. We identified multimodal biomarkers distinguishing FMDs from healthy controls (HCs) using machine-learning approaches. METHODS: In this multicenter cross-sectional study, consecutive adults with a clinically established FMDs diagnosis (n = 75, 74.7% female; mean age 44.20 ± 12.92) and age- and sex-matched HCs (n = 75; 58.6% female; 48.42 ± 11.67) were recruited. All participants underwent standardize

Diaphragm weakness in late-onset Pompe disease: A complex interplay between lower motor neuron and muscle fibre degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) patients may still need ventilation support at some point of their disease course, despite regular recombinant human alglucosidase alfa treatment. This suggest that other pathophysiological mechanisms than muscle fibre lesion can contribute to the respiratory failure process. We investigate through neurophysiology whether spinal phrenic motor neuron dysfunction could contribute to diaphragm weakness in LOPD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of symptomatic LOPD patients were prospectively studied in our centre from January 2022 to April 2023. W

New Therapeutics in Alzheimer's Disease Longitudinal Cohort study (NTAD): study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: With the pressing need to develop treatments that slow or stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease, new tools are needed to reduce clinical trial duration and validate new targets for human therapeutics. Such tools could be derived from neurophysiological measurements of disease. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The New Therapeutics in Alzheimer's Disease study (NTAD) aims to identify a biomarker set from magneto/electroencephalography that is sensitive to disease and progression over 1 year. The study will recruit 100 people with amyloid-positive mild cognitive impairment or early-stag

Delta resting-state functional connectivity in the cognitive control network as a prognostic factor for maintaining abstinence: An eLORETA preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Cortical regions that support cognitive control are increasingly well recognized, but the functional mechanisms that promote such control over emotional and behavioral hyperreactivity to alcohol in recently abstinent alcohol-dependent patients are still insufficiently understood. This study aimed to identify neurophysiological biomarkers of maintaining abstinence in alcohol-dependent individuals after alcohol treatment by investigating the resting-state EEG-based functional connectivity in the cognitive control network (CCN). METHODS: Lagged phase synchronization between CCN areas
