Ocular surface in patients with different degrees of myopia.

AIM: To investigate the clinical features of the ocular surface in patients with different degrees of myopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 122 participants with myopia in Beijing Tongren Hospital from February to June, 2023. After completing the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score scale, measurements were taken for refraction, biometric parameters and ocular surface parameters. The prevalence, severity and related parameters of the dry eye among different groups based on axial length (AL) were compared. Correlation analysis was performed between ocular surfac

[Ocular findings associated with hypertelorism].

PURPOSE: To show that in hypertelorism (a horizontal orbital dystopia in which interorbital distance is increased) there are various ophthalmologic abnormalities associated: strabismus, nystagmus, amblyopia, refractive errors, palpebral malpositions, lacrimal system imperforation, fundoscopic and anterior segment lesions. We want to show that the frequence and severity of ophthalmic findings are associated to the severity of hypertelorism. But the evolution and treatment of ocular findings is independent from the treatment of this orbital dystopia. METHODS: We have studied 12 cases of hyperte

Vision profile of the athletes of the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

BACKGROUND: Special Olympics were organized in 1968 by Eunice Shriver as a program of physical fitness for individuals with mental handicaps. Numerous epidemiologic studies report an increase in visual problems in this population. METHODS: A comprehensive vision screening was conducted at the 1995 Special Olympic World Summer Games to identify the prevalence of visual anomalies in this select group. Testing included visual acuity, refractive error, ocular motor skills, stereopsis, color vision, contrast sensitivity, eye-hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, and an ocular health evaluation

Optical and Visual Diet in Myopia.

The alarming increase in myopia prevalence in modern times is attributed to environmental changes affecting young individuals. Visual scenes are projected onto the retina by the eye's optical components and sampled by retinal photoreceptors, shaping the spatial, temporal, and chromatic "visual diet" fed to the visual system. These inputs provide essential signaling for proper emmetropization and, in eyes that develop myopia, trigger the cascade of events leading to excessive axial elongation. This article offers foundational components for formulating computational models of myopic eyes and hi

Do Anisometropic Eyes Have Steeper Retinas Than Their Isometropic Counterparts?

SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings suggest that retinal shapes of the eyes of anisometropes are not different from that of the eyes of isometropes with the same refractions. PURPOSE: We investigated ( a ) intereye differences in relative peripheral eye lengths between isometropes and anisometropes and ( b ) if the retinal shape is different between isometropic and anisometropic eyes with the same central refraction. METHODS: Central and peripheral eye lengths were determined along the horizontal meridian in 10° intervals out to ±30° using a noncontact biometer in 28 isometropes and 16 anisometropes.

[Calculations of mean refraction and variation of refraction using a dioptric space].

Polar notations (sphere, cylinder, and axis) of refraction perfectly characterize a single refraction but are not suitable for statistical analysis or graphic representation. While the spherical component of refraction can be easily analyzed by the spherical equivalent, statistical analysis of astigmatism requires non-polar expressions of refraction. Indeed, the cylinder and axis of astigmatism are not independent data. In addition, axis is a directional data including a non-trigonometric cycle. Refraction can be written in a non-polar notation by three rectangular coordinates (x, y, z), which

[How to correct presbyopia].

The appropriate addition correcting a patient's presbyopia can be determined by many ways. It depends on the amplitude of accommodation and convergence, ametropia and age of the patient but also on the kind of work and on the subjectively comfortable distance at which it is performed.

Astigmatic treatment with photorefractive keratectomy: Investigations of non-keratometric ocular astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of non-keratometric ocular astigmatisms on visual and refractive outcomes after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for correction of myopic astigmatisms. METHODS: Seventy one eyes of 36 subjects were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent PRK for treatment of myopia. Subjects were evaluated for refractive error, keratometry, and visual acuity before and six months after surgery. Pre- and post-op non-keratometric astigmatisms were calculated by vectorial analysis of the difference between the corneal plane refractive astigmatism and keratometric astigmatism.

Evaluation of postoperative refractive error correction after cataract surgery.

Suboptimal cataract surgery outcomes remain a challenge in most developing countries. In Ghana, about 2 million people have been reported to be blind due to cataract with about 20% new cases being recorded yearly. The aim of this study was to evaluate postoperative correction of refractive errors after cataract surgery in a selected eye hospital in Ashanti Region, Ghana. This was a retrospective study where medical records of patients (aged 40-100) who reported to an eye hospital in Ghana from 2013-2018 were reviewed. Included in the study were patients aged ≥40 years and patients with complet

The Association of Peripheral Refraction and Relative Peripheral Refraction with Astigmatism in Shanghai Schoolchildren's Myopia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: Currently, no relevant studies have reported a relationship between astigmatism and peripheral refraction (PR). We aimed to describe the association between PR and relative peripheral refraction (RPR) with astigmatism in Chinese children with mild to moderate myopia, and to provide new insights into the influence of astigmatism. METHODS: Three-hundred-and-seven children (6-14 years old) from Shanghai were included in this study. The PR and RPR were measured using multispectral refraction topography (MRT). Cycloplegic refraction was measured using an autorefractor (KR-8900, Topcon), w

Axial Elongation During Short-Term Accommodation in Myopic and Nonmyopic Children.

PURPOSE: Axial length increases during accommodation in adults and children; however, refractive error group differences are conflicting and have not been explored in pediatric populations. This study aimed to evaluate differences in accommodation-induced axial elongation between myopic and nonmyopic children. METHODS: A range of ocular biometric measurements were captured during brief accommodation tasks (0, 3, 6, and 9 D) using a Badal optometer mounted to a noncontact optical biometer (Zeiss IOLMaster 700). Reliable measurements were captured for 15 myopic and 15 age- and sex-matched nonmy

Refractive plasticity of the developing chick eye: a summary and update.

PURPOSE: To summarize the OPO 1992 Classic Paper: Refractive plasticity of the developing chick eye (12: 448-452) and discuss recent findings in refractive development. SUMMARY AND RECENT FINDINGS: The classic paper shows that when lightweight plastic goggles with rigid contact lens inserts are applied to the eyes of newly hatched chicks, the eye responds accurately to defocus between -10 and +20 D, although hyperopia develops more rapidly. While the changes largely are due to change in axial length, high levels of hyperopia are associated with corneal flattening. Also, newly hatched chicks a
