The Outcome of Artisan Intraocular Lens Implantation in Children: A Narrative Review.

Aphakia is a condition in which the eye's crystalline lens is not in its proper position because of a perforating injury, surgical removal, dislocation of the lens, or congenital anomaly. The management of aphakia can be either conservative or surgical. Various surgical techniques could be used, including retro pupillary-fixated iris-claw intraocular lenses (IOLs) and anterior-fixated iris-claw IOLs. One of the challenges faced by ophthalmologists is the optical rehabilitation of pediatric aphakic patients because a child's eye is still growing, resulting in fundamental variations in their ref

Surgical treatment of keratoconus at the turn of the 20th century.

PURPOSE: This paper reviews surgical modalities for treatment of keratoconus at the threshold of the 20th century. METHODS: All ophthalmic literature from 1895 until 1925 in English and German, available at the library of the Institute of Ophthalmology, London, United Kingdom, was studied with respect to this topic. RESULTS: Three thermal procedures were described; galvanocauterization with perforation, without perforation, and a non-contact application of heat to the corneal apex. Radial extension of a thermal burn to correct the minus cylinder represented a further modification. Excision o

Effects of Laser In Situ Keratomileusis and Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction on Corneal Biomechanical Behavior: A Finite Element Analysis.

Myopia, which is the result of the uncoordinated development of the eyeball, has become a major public health focus worldwide. Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) have been successfully used in modern corneal refractive surgery. However, there are still controversies about postoperative results of LASIK and SMILE. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element model of the cornea was constructed based on the elevation and pachymetry data of a female volunteer. Surgical parameters, magnitudes of myopic correction, and intraocular pressure (IOP

[Pseudophakic supplementary intraocular lenses].

Non-corrected residual refractive errors after cataract extraction and implantation of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) lead to limited visual acuity or suboptimal usage of enhanced optical properties of IOLs, such as bifocal implants, which are dependent on postoperative emmetropia. In addition to the established corneal procedures for correction of ametropia (excimer laser surgery or limbal relaxing incisions) sulcus supported pseudophakic supplementary IOLs can also be implanted. These IOLs have been designed to deal with the problem associated with sulcus implantation, such as pigment

Epikeratophakia for keratoconus. Long-term results using fresh, free-hand made lamellar grafts.

Epikeratophakia using fresh, free-hand made corneal grafts was done in 16 patients with keratoconus. The follow-up period averaged 27.8 months (range 13-45 months). A significant improvement of visual acuity was obtained (p = 0.002), and 14 of the 16 eyes (87.5%) achieved a corrected visual acuity greater than or equal to 6/12. The spherical equivalent and the cylindrical refractive error were reduced (p less than 0.05), and a significant flattening of the central corneal curvature was obtained (p less than 0.002). The mean postoperative central corneal astigmatism was 4.25 D. Postoperatively,

Enhancement of dynamic visual acuity using transcranial alternating current stimulation with gamma burst entrained on alpha wave troughs.

BACKGROUND: Cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) of cortical oscillations is observed within and across cortical regions during higher-order cognitive processes. Particularly, the PAC of alpha and gamma waves in the occipital cortex is closely associated with visual perception. In theory, gamma oscillation is a neuronal representation of visual stimuli, which drives the duty cycle of visual perception together with alpha oscillation. Therefore, it is believed that the timing of entrainment in alpha-gamma PAC may play a critical role in the performance of visual perception. We hypothe
